Person updating their name in Aadhaar card online through the myAadhaar portal in India
Quick Answer

Yes, you can change your name in Aadhaar. Demographic details like your name can be updated online on the myAadhaar portal if your mobile number is registered, or in person at an Aadhaar Seva Kendra. For a small spelling correction, a valid photo ID may be enough. For a full legal name change, after marriage, divorce or personal reasons, a Government Gazette notification is the safe and accepted proof. We get you the Gazette and guide the Aadhaar update. Remember, UIDAI allows a name change only twice in a lifetime.

The Key Question

When Do You Need a Gazette to Change Your Aadhaar Name?

This is where honest advice saves you time. If you only need to fix a small spelling mistake, a valid photo ID such as your PAN card or passport is often accepted as proof, and you may not need a Gazette at all.

But if you are making a real name change, after marriage, after divorce, or by personal choice, UIDAI needs strong proof of that change. A Government Gazette notification is the safest, most widely accepted proof for a full name change in Aadhaar. We tell you exactly which one your case needs, so your update is not rejected.

The Legal Route

The Central Gazette Process for a Full Aadhaar Name Change

If your Aadhaar update is a full legal name change, this is the proof you need.

For a full name change, UIDAI needs strong proof, and the Government Gazette notification is the safest one. The Gazette of India is the official public journal of the Government, and your name change is published in Part IV by the Department of Publication in Civil Lines, Delhi. Since 2026 the process runs mostly on the e-Gazette platform, where the digital copy carries the same legal weight as print.

To get the Gazette, we file your notarised affidavit, the original newspaper cuttings, the application form, a soft copy of the notice, the fee receipt and two passport photographs with the Controller of Publications. The Gazette is published weekly, usually on a Saturday, and you then use that copy as proof for your Aadhaar update. We prepare and file this whole package for you.

Fee and timeline: the Government Gazette fee is paid online through BharatKosh, Rs 1,100 for an adult and Rs 1,700 for a minor. Publication usually takes four to six weeks. Your name must be spelt exactly the same across the affidavit, the newspaper advertisement and the application, and then match your Aadhaar update.
