Quick Answer

Yes, you can change the policyholder name on your LIC policy. You apply at your home branch, the branch where you took the policy, with a name change request and valid proof. For a spelling correction, an affidavit and ID may be enough. After marriage, a marriage certificate usually works. For a full legal name change, LIC accepts a Government Gazette notification. This matters most for claim settlement, because if your name does not match, your family can face delays. We get you the Gazette and guide the whole process.

The Key Question

When Do You Need a Gazette for an LIC Name Change?

The right proof depends on your reason. For a small spelling correction, an affidavit with a valid ID is often enough. For a change after marriage, a marriage certificate with your updated ID usually works. For a divorce, a divorce decree with supporting proof is accepted.

For a full legal name change, adopting a genuinely new name, LIC accepts a Government Gazette notification as the strongest proof. It is also the safest option when you want your policy records to match every other document. We tell you exactly which proof your case needs.

Why It Really Matters

Why a Name Mismatch Puts Your LIC Claim at Risk

This is the reason not to delay. LIC uses the exact name on your policy for every transaction, including the final claim. If your policy still shows your old name while your Aadhaar, PAN and bank show your new name, that mismatch can raise questions at the worst possible time, when your nominee is claiming the money.

A simple name update today protects your family from paperwork, proof requests and delays later. When your policy, ID and bank records all carry the same name, the claim is clean and quick. That peace of mind is worth the small effort now.

Handy tip: while updating your name, you can also update your nominee at the same branch visit using the nominee change form, so both your name and your nominee details stay current.

The Legal Route

The Central Gazette Process for a Full LIC Name Change

A full legal name change is done in three clear steps. We handle all three for you.

Step 1, Prepare and Notarise the Affidavit

First, a name change affidavit is made on stamp paper. It states your old name, your new name, the reason for the change, and your father's or husband's name, address and age. You sign it before a notary. This affidavit is your legal declaration that you are changing your name.

Step 2, Publish in Two Newspapers

Next, a name change advertisement is published in two newspapers, usually one English and one regional language paper. This is the public notice of your change. The original newspaper cuttings must be kept safely, because the Gazette office needs them as proof.

Step 3, Notify in the Government Gazette

Finally, the affidavit, the newspaper cuttings, the application form, a soft copy of the notice and the fee are submitted to the Department of Publication in Civil Lines, Delhi. Your change is published in Part IV of the Gazette of India, and that Gazette copy becomes your permanent legal proof.

The Gazette of India is the official public journal of the Government. Since 2026 the process runs mostly on the e-Gazette platform, where the digital copy carries the same legal weight as the printed one. The Gazette is published weekly, usually on a Saturday. Once you have it, you submit that copy to your LIC home branch as proof of your new name. We prepare and file this whole package for you.

Fee and timeline: the Government Gazette fee is paid online through BharatKosh, Rs 1,100 for an adult and Rs 1,700 for a minor. The three steps together usually take four to six weeks. Keep your name spelt exactly the same across the affidavit, the newspaper ad, the Gazette and your policy to avoid a mismatch at claim time.

For a full legal name change, LIC accepts a Government Gazette notification as the strongest proof. After marriage, a marriage certificate usually works. For a spelling correction, an affidavit with ID may be enough.

What documents do I need for an LIC name change?
A request letter, a Gazette notification for a full change or a marriage certificate for marriage, an affidavit, your original policy document and a valid photo ID.
