Yes, you can legally change the name of a minor in India. A minor is a child below 18 years of age, and the name change is applied by the parents or legal guardian, not the child. The affidavit is sworn in the parents' name, with their consent, and is followed by a newspaper advertisement and a Government Gazette notification. Once the Gazette is published, the child's new name can be updated on the birth certificate, Aadhaar, school records and passport.

Religion Change
Update the child's name after a change of religion in the family.
Personal Choice
Simply choose a name the family feels is right for the child's future.
Who Can Apply and Parental Consent Rules
A minor's name change protects the child, so consent is handled carefully.
Both Parents Present
Both parents give consent and sign the affidavit and the prescribed proforma.
Single Parent or Guardian
The available parent or legal guardian applies, with supporting documents such as a death certificate or custody order.
If Parents Disagree
When one parent does not agree, a court order may be needed before the name change can proceed.

For a child, applying for the right one saves time and money.
| Point | Birth Certificate Correction | Full Name Change |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Fixing a small error, like a wrong spelling in the child's recorded name. | Giving the child a genuinely new name, for adoption or personal reasons. |
| Who handles it | The local Registrar under Section 15 of the RBD Act, 1969, not the Gazette. | Done through the parents' affidavit, newspaper advertisement and Gazette notification. |
| Proof you receive | A corrected birth certificate from the Registrar. | A Gazette notification, accepted everywhere. |
The Central Gazette Process for a Name Change
Your child's name change becomes official once it is published in the Central Gazette of India.
The Gazette of India is the official public journal of the Government of India, and the name change notice is published in Part IV. It is run by the Department of Publication, Controller of Publications, in Civil Lines, Delhi. Since 2026 the process runs mostly on the e-Gazette platform, where the digital copy carries the same legal weight as a printed one.
For the Central Gazette, the file is sent to the Controller of Publications in Delhi with the parents' notarised affidavit, the original newspaper cuttings, the filled application form, a soft copy of the notice, the fee receipt and passport photographs. The Gazette is published weekly, usually on a Saturday, after which you download your copy from the official e-Gazette portal. We prepare and file this whole package for you.
Benefits of a Central Gazette Notification
The Central Gazette gives your child's new name the widest legal acceptance in India.
Nationwide Validity
Valid across all of India, unlike a State Gazette that works only within one state.
Accepted by Schools and Offices
Schools, the passport office, UIDAI for Aadhaar and banks accept the Central Gazette as proof.
Lifetime Legal Proof
A permanent record of the name change for the child's future documents and applications.
Easy Document Updates
Update the birth certificate, Aadhaar, school records and passport smoothly with the copy.
Works for Every Reason
Adoption, spelling correction, family change or personal choice, the same route applies.
Protects Against Fraud
An official public record that helps prevent misuse of the child's old or new identity.
