Parents updating their child name across birth certificate, Aadhaar and school records in India
Quick Answer

Yes, you can legally change the name of a minor in India. A minor is a child below 18 years of age, and the name change is applied by the parents or legal guardian, not the child. The affidavit is sworn in the parents' name, with their consent, and is followed by a newspaper advertisement and a Government Gazette notification. Once the Gazette is published, the child's new name can be updated on the birth certificate, Aadhaar, school records and passport.

The Legal Route

The Central Gazette Process for a Name Change

Your child's name change becomes official once it is published in the Central Gazette of India.

The Gazette of India is the official public journal of the Government of India, and the name change notice is published in Part IV. It is run by the Department of Publication, Controller of Publications, in Civil Lines, Delhi. Since 2026 the process runs mostly on the e-Gazette platform, where the digital copy carries the same legal weight as a printed one.

For the Central Gazette, the file is sent to the Controller of Publications in Delhi with the parents' notarised affidavit, the original newspaper cuttings, the filled application form, a soft copy of the notice, the fee receipt and passport photographs. The Gazette is published weekly, usually on a Saturday, after which you download your copy from the official e-Gazette portal. We prepare and file this whole package for you.

Fee and timeline: the Government Gazette fee is paid online through BharatKosh, Rs 1,700 for a minor. Publication usually takes four to six weeks. To avoid an objection, the child's name must be spelt exactly the same across the affidavit, the newspaper advertisement and the application form.
Why It Matters

Benefits of a Central Gazette Notification

The Central Gazette gives your child's new name the widest legal acceptance in India.

🌐

Nationwide Validity

Valid across all of India, unlike a State Gazette that works only within one state.

🏫

Accepted by Schools and Offices

Schools, the passport office, UIDAI for Aadhaar and banks accept the Central Gazette as proof.

📜

Lifetime Legal Proof

A permanent record of the name change for the child's future documents and applications.

🔄

Easy Document Updates

Update the birth certificate, Aadhaar, school records and passport smoothly with the copy.

Works for Every Reason

Adoption, spelling correction, family change or personal choice, the same route applies.

🛡️

Protects Against Fraud

An official public record that helps prevent misuse of the child's old or new identity.

People Also Ask

Minor Name Change in India, Frequently Asked Questions

Clear answers to the questions parents ask most often.

Who can apply for a minor's name change?
The parents or the legal guardian apply on behalf of the child. The affidavit is sworn in the parents' name, not the child's, since a minor is below 18 years of age.
Do both parents need to give consent?
Usually yes, both parents give consent and sign. In cases of single parenthood, the death of a parent, or a custody order, the available parent or guardian can apply with supporting documents.
Is a Gazette notification mandatory for a minor?
For a full name change, yes. The Gazette notification is the proof used to update the birth certificate, Aadhaar, school records and passport.
Can I just fix a spelling mistake in my child's birth certificate?
A small spelling correction is usually handled by the local Registrar under Section 15 of the RBD Act, 1969, not the Gazette. A full new name for the child needs the affidavit, newspaper and Gazette route. We confirm which one your case needs.
How long does it take and what does it cost?
Most cases are completed within three to seven weeks. Our service fee starts at Rs 1,999, and the Government Gazette fee for a minor is Rs 1,700, paid separately.
Can the child change the name again after turning 18?
Yes. Once the child becomes an adult, they can re-affirm the name or change it again through the standard adult process.
What documents are needed for a minor name change?
The parents' affidavit, the child's birth certificate, both parents' ID and address proof, newspaper cuttings, photographs of the child and parents, the signed proforma, and the fee receipt. Adoption or single-parent cases need a few extra documents.
