Quick Answer

To change your name legally in Ahmedabad, you follow three steps. A notarised affidavit on stamp paper, a public notice in two newspapers, one English and one Gujarati, and then a Gazette notification. The Gujarat Gazette is printed at Gandhinagar, about 25 kilometres away, while the Central Gazette is filed in Delhi and accepted in every state.

Check Your Municipal Papers First

Your Corporation Is Called Amdavad, Not Ahmedabad

The official name of the civic body here is the Amdavad Municipal Corporation. So anything the corporation issues can carry Amdavad, while your Aadhaar, PAN and school certificate almost certainly say Ahmedabad. A birth certificate, a property tax receipt, a marriage registration entry or a shop licence from the corporation is the most likely place you will meet this. Neither spelling is wrong. Amdavad is the Gujarati form of the same city name.

This is the most common address mismatch in the whole state, and it catches people because it looks like a typing error rather than an official difference. A name change file is checked on the name and the address together, so we settle the wording before drafting, copy the form on your identity proof, and record the corporation version in the affidavit as well. That way an officer comparing an AMC birth certificate with a recent Aadhaar has nothing left to query.

Send both before we draft: your Aadhaar and any corporation-issued paper. Tell us how the city name appears on each. If one says Amdavad and the other Ahmedabad, that is expected, and it belongs in the affidavit rather than being quietly ignored.
Central Gazette

The Central Gazette Process for a Name Change in Ahmedabad

This is the route accepted everywhere in India and abroad. Here is exactly what happens at each step.

Prepare and Notarise the Affidavit

A sworn declaration on non-judicial stamp paper, signed with two witnesses and attested by a Notary Public or First Class Magistrate in Ahmedabad.

Publish in English and Gujarati Newspapers

One English daily and one Gujarati daily, carrying the same old name, new name, address and affidavit date.

File With the Department of Publication

The complete file goes to the Controller of Publications, Civil Lines, Delhi, and your notice appears in Part IV of the Gazette of India.

Step 1 in Detail

What Your Name Change Affidavit Must Contain

Your old name exactly as printed on your existing documents
Your new name, spelt exactly as you want it recorded forever
Your flat or house number, society, area and city as on your proof
The reason, such as marriage, divorce, correction or personal choice
A declaration that both names belong to the same person
Your signature, two witness signatures, and the notary stamp with date
Decide the initials once, not later: initials are the biggest cause of rejection in Gujarat. Choose between A. B. Patel, A B Patel or the full expanded form, fix the spacing and the surname spelling, and keep it identical on all three documents.
Step 2 in Detail

The English and Gujarati Newspaper Rules

Two papers are needed, one English and one Gujarati, not just one
The notice must repeat the same old name, new name and address as the affidavit
It must mention the date on which the affidavit was made
The advertisement usually appears in the classified section
Keep the original dated cuttings showing the paper name
Even one letter spelt differently can get your whole file returned
Cost of this step: two budget dailies cost about Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,500 together, while premium national papers can cost Rs 2,500 to Rs 5,000. Ahmedabad editions of the major dailies circulate the same morning, so notices go in quickly.
Step 3 in Detail

What Goes Into Your Gazette File

The signed Gazette application form in the prescribed proforma
The original notarised affidavit
Original cuttings of both newspaper advertisements
A request letter addressed to the publishing authority
Identity proof, two photographs and the soft copy of the notice
The fee receipt, paid in the applicant's own name
Government fee and time: Rs 1,100 for an adult and Rs 1,700 for a minor for the Central Gazette. Publication usually takes 4 to 6 weeks after a complete file reaches the department, and the e-Gazette copy carries the same legal weight as the printed one.
For Very Old Records

This City Has Carried Three Names Across Nine Centuries

The settlement here was known as Ashaval in the eleventh century. The Solanki ruler Karandev the First then established a city on the banks of the Sabarmati and called it Karnavati. In 1411 Sultan Ahmed Shah laid the foundation of a new walled city beside it, and that is the Ahmedabad we know. Today the walled city carries a UNESCO World Heritage listing, the only city in India to hold one.

For a name change file this matters when your papers are genuinely old. A land record, a trust deed or a family document from an earlier era can carry a place name that does not appear on any current list. It is not an error and it does not weaken your case. The affidavit simply names the document, says who issued it and when, and connects it to your present address so the chain reads as one place from the oldest paper to the newest.

Send the oldest paper in the house: usually a matric certificate, a land record or an old society document. We read it before advising, and an unfamiliar place name on it is useful evidence rather than a problem.

Gujarat Gazette or Central Gazette for Ahmedabad?

Both are valid. Here is the honest difference, so you pick the right one the first time.

Our honest advice for Ahmedabad: the state press is close and the state route is fine for a Gujarat department record. This is a business city where a great many people hold company, bank and overseas records, and for all of those the Central Gazette settles the question once. The state level detail is on our Gujarat name change guide, and the full comparison is in our name change agent in India guide.
A Question We Are Asked Often

Is Ahmedabad Being Renamed Karnavati, and Does It Affect Your File?

You may have read that the city is to be renamed Karnavati. Here is the honest position. The state Government said in 2018 that it was examining the idea, but when the question was raised in the Gujarat assembly in February 2024, the General Administration Department clarified that no formal proposal had been sent to the central Government. So as things stand the city is Ahmedabad, and that is the name your documents should carry.

The minister also explained how a place renaming actually works, and it is worth knowing because it mirrors everything else on this page. Resolutions have to pass at the village, taluka and district level, then go to the state department, and only then to the Home Ministry. Applications sent straight to the department are not entertained at all. They are redirected to the corporation, the municipality or the district panchayat. In other words, the right office decides, not the highest office. That is exactly why we tell you which counter your case belongs at before you spend anything.

Nothing to do for now: do not hold up your name change waiting for a city renaming, and do not let anyone charge you for a document that anticipates one. If the city name ever changes officially, existing records stay valid and are read as the same place, exactly as Amdavad and Ahmedabad are today.
Save Your Money

Not Every Case in Ahmedabad Needs a Gazette

Many agents sell a Gazette for every case. That is not honest. A small spelling mistake is usually fixed with a notarised affidavit and your existing proof at each authority. A name error in a birth certificate is corrected by the Registrar through the Amdavad Municipal Corporation, not by Gazette, and if the birth was registered outside the corporation limits it goes to that nagarpalika or gram panchayat instead.

Caste, income and residence certificates are corrected by the issuing authority at the taluka or Mamlatdar office, and land record entries through the revenue side and the talati. A certificate issued in another state is corrected by that state, not by any office in Gujarat. A Gazette is for a full legal name change, after marriage, after divorce, for numerology or by personal choice, and for cases where the same difference repeats across several records.

People Also Ask

Name Change in Ahmedabad, Frequently Asked Questions

Clear answers to the questions we hear most often.

How do I change my name legally in Ahmedabad?
In three steps. A notarised affidavit on stamp paper, a public notice in one English and one Gujarati newspaper, and a Gazette notification. We handle all three for you, fully online.
My birth certificate says Amdavad but my Aadhaar says Ahmedabad, is that a problem?
No. The civic body is officially the Amdavad Municipal Corporation, so its documents carry the Gujarati form of the same city name. Use the spelling on your identity proof and let the affidavit record both.
Should I write Amdavad or Ahmedabad on the form?
Use exactly what appears on your identity proof, and keep it identical on the affidavit, the newspaper notice and the Gazette application. The affidavit should note the other version so nobody reads them as two places.
Is Ahmedabad being renamed Karnavati?
Not as things stand. The state Government said in 2018 that it was examining the idea, but in February 2024 the General Administration Department told the assembly that no formal proposal had been sent to the central Government. Your documents should carry Ahmedabad.
My old paper uses an older name for the city, can I still use it?
Yes. The settlement was Ashaval in the eleventh century and Karnavati before Ahmedabad was founded in 1411, so a very old record can carry a name not on any current list. It is useful evidence and the affidavit places it in the chain.
My initials are written differently on different documents, what do I do?
This is the most common reason a Gujarat file is rejected. Decide the final form once, including spacing and surname spelling, and keep it identical across all three documents.
Should I take the Gujarat Gazette or the Central Gazette?
The Gujarat Gazette works within the state and the press is about 25 kilometres away at Gandhinagar. For a passport, a company or bank record, or work outside Gujarat, take the Central Gazette.
How do I correct a name in an Ahmedabad birth certificate?
That is a Registrar correction through the Amdavad Municipal Corporation, or through the nagarpalika or gram panchayat if the birth was registered outside corporation limits. It is not a Gazette matter.
How much does a name change cost in Ahmedabad?
The Central Gazette Government fee is Rs 1,100 for an adult and Rs 1,700 for a minor. The Gujarat Gazette fee is separate and non-refundable, and newspaper and affidavit charges are extra. Our complete service starts at Rs 3,999.
Will the Gazette update my Aadhaar and PAN automatically?
No. The Gazette is the proof of the change. You then apply to each authority separately, and each has its own process. We guide you through Aadhaar, PAN, passport, bank and college records after publication.
