To change your name legally in Gujarat, you follow three steps. A notarised affidavit on stamp paper, a public notice in two newspapers, one English and one Gujarati, and then a Gazette notification. Gujarat has its own Gazette printed at Gandhinagar, while the Central Gazette is filed in Delhi and accepted in every state. We handle all three steps online.
Gujarat Now Has 34 Districts, Not 33
On 2 October 2025 the Revenue Department issued a notification under the Gujarat Land Revenue Code of 1879 dividing Banaskantha into two districts. The new district is Vav-Tharad, with its headquarters at Tharad and eight talukas, while Banaskantha keeps Palanpur as its headquarters. Gujarat therefore has thirty four districts today. Almost every guide you will read online still says thirty three.
If your village went into the new district, this matters. Every document you hold from before that date names Banaskantha, while anything issued since names Vav-Tharad. Both are correct for their time and neither needs correcting. But a name change file is checked on the name and the address together, so a verifier comparing an older certificate with a recent Aadhaar sees two districts and asks. The affidavit has to state plainly that the village is the same and the district was reorganised in October 2025.
The Central Gazette Process for a Name Change in Gujarat
This is the route accepted everywhere in India and abroad. Here is exactly what happens at each step.
Prepare and Notarise the Affidavit
A sworn declaration on non-judicial stamp paper, signed with two witnesses and attested by a Notary Public or First Class Magistrate in Gujarat.
Publish in English and Gujarati Newspapers
One English daily and one Gujarati daily, carrying the same old name, new name, address and affidavit date.
File With the Department of Publication
The complete file goes to the Controller of Publications, Civil Lines, Delhi, and your notice appears in Part IV of the Gazette of India.

What Goes Into Your Gazette File
Gujarat Has Its Own Gazette, With a Name Change Section of Its Own
The Gujarat Gazette is published by the Directorate of Government Printing and Stationery, at the Government Printing Press in Sector 29, Gandhinagar. Unlike most states, Gujarat runs an e-Gazette portal that carries a dedicated Change of Name or Surname application, where you enter the old name, the new name, the address and your district and taluka, and attach the supporting documents. Once published you can search and download your own notification from the portal.
That is genuinely convenient, and for a state department record it is often the faster route. It has one limit worth knowing before you pay. A state Gazette is used mainly inside its own state. For a passport, a central Government service record, a job or a college outside Gujarat, or anything that has to be attested for use abroad, the Central Gazette of India is what offices ask for. We tell you which one applies to your case before you spend anything.
Gujarat State Gazette or Central Gazette?
Both are valid. Here is the honest difference, so you pick the right one the first time.
| Point | Gujarat Gazette | Central Gazette of India |
|---|---|---|
| Published by | Directorate of Government Printing and Stationery, Gandhinagar | Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi |
| Where it appears | Gujarat Official Gazette | Part IV of the Gazette of India |
| How you apply | Through the state e-Gazette portal | File posted to the Department of Publication |
| Where it is accepted | Mainly within Gujarat | Every state, and by all Government and private bodies in India |
| Central Government service records | Meant for state department records | The route central service records work with |
| Working or studying outside Gujarat | Often questioned elsewhere | Accepted wherever you go |
| Passport and going abroad | Usually not accepted for visa and attestation | The proof passport offices and embassies look for |
| Government fee | As set by the state, non-refundable | Rs 1,100 adult, Rs 1,700 minor |
Your Old Papers May Name a State That No Longer Exists
Gujarat became a state on 1 May 1960, when the bilingual Bombay State was divided under the Bombay Reorganisation Act. Before that, the districts of present day Gujarat sat inside Bombay State. Go back a little further and the map changes again. Saurashtra was a state of its own from 1948 to 1956, formed from around two hundred princely holdings with its capital at Rajkot. Kutch was a separate state under direct central administration until 1956. Baroda State merged into Bombay State in 1949. In colonial records, notices for these districts appeared in the Bombay Presidency Gazette.
So a school certificate, a land record or a service paper held by a Gujarati family can name Bombay State, Saurashtra State, Kutch State or Baroda State, none of which exist today, and none of which match a present day Aadhaar. None of it is an error. What it needs is an affidavit that names each document, says which authority issued it and when, and declares that every version belongs to one person. Standard drafts skip this entirely.
Not Every Case in Gujarat Needs a Gazette
Many agents sell a Gazette for every case. That is not honest. A small spelling mistake is usually fixed with a notarised affidavit and your existing proof at each authority. A name error in a birth certificate is corrected by the Registrar through your municipal corporation, nagarpalika or gram panchayat, not by Gazette.
Caste, income and residence certificates are corrected by the issuing authority at the taluka or Mamlatdar office, and land record entries through the revenue side and the talati. A certificate issued in another state is corrected by that state, not by any office in Gujarat. A Gazette is for a full legal name change, after marriage, after divorce, for numerology or by personal choice, and for cases where the same difference repeats across several records. We read your papers first and tell you which route you actually need.
