Quick Answer

To change your name legally in Bhavnagar, you follow three steps. A notarised affidavit on stamp paper, a public notice in two newspapers, one English and one Gujarati, and then a Gazette notification. If your family paper names Sihor, Umrala, Sejakpur, Palitana or Vallabhipur, it is still valid, and the affidavit has to explain the chain.

Where Your Family Records Begin

The Capital Moved Four Times, And One Old Name Is Now Ranpur

The Gohil Rajputs came down to the Gujarat coast around 1260 and set up three capitals in turn, Sejakpur, Umrala and Sihor. Sejakpur was founded in 1194 and is known today as Ranpur, so that name has itself changed. In 1723, after Sihor was raided once too often, Bhavsinhji Gohil built a new capital near the village of Vadva, about twenty kilometres away, and named it Bhavnagar after himself, choosing the site for its sea trade.

That is five place names for what is effectively one family seat, and old paperwork here reflects it. A land record, a temple register or a very old school paper can name Sihor, Umrala, Sejakpur, Vadva or Bhavnagar, and one of those does not even appear on a modern map under that name. None of it is an error. The affidavit has to name each document, say who issued it and when, record the place exactly as written, and declare that all of them belong to the same family and the same address.

Send the oldest paper in the house: photograph it as it is, do not get it retyped. If it names a place you cannot find today, tell us and we will identify it before drafting rather than leaving it for an officer to puzzle over.
Central Gazette

The Central Gazette Process for a Name Change in Bhavnagar

This is the route accepted everywhere in India and abroad. Here is exactly what happens at each step.

Prepare and Notarise the Affidavit

A sworn declaration on non-judicial stamp paper, signed with two witnesses and attested by a Notary Public or First Class Magistrate in Bhavnagar.

Publish in English and Gujarati Newspapers

One English daily and one Gujarati daily, carrying the same old name, new name, address and affidavit date.

File With the Department of Publication

The complete file goes to the Controller of Publications, Civil Lines, Delhi, and your notice appears in Part IV of the Gazette of India.

Step 1 in Detail

What Your Name Change Affidavit Must Contain

Your old name exactly as printed on your existing documents
Your new name, spelt exactly as you want it recorded forever
Your flat or house number, society, area and city as on your proof
Any older paper naming Sihor, Umrala, Palitana or Vallabhipur
A declaration that both names belong to the same person
Your signature, two witness signatures, and the notary stamp with date
Decide the initials once, not later: initials are the biggest cause of rejection in Gujarat. Choose between A. B. Gohil, A B Gohil or the full expanded form, fix the spacing and the surname spelling, and keep it identical on all three documents.
Step 2 in Detail

The English and Gujarati Newspaper Rules

Two papers are needed, one English and one Gujarati, not just one
The notice must repeat the same old name, new name and address as the affidavit
It must mention the date on which the affidavit was made
The advertisement usually appears in the classified section
Keep the original dated cuttings showing the paper name
Even one letter spelt differently can get your whole file returned
Cost of this step: two budget dailies cost about Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,500 together, while premium national papers can cost Rs 2,500 to Rs 5,000. Saurashtra has strong Gujarati editions, so a local notice is straightforward to place.
Step 3 in Detail

What Goes Into Your Gazette File

The signed Gazette application form in the prescribed proforma
The original notarised affidavit
Original cuttings of both newspaper advertisements
A request letter addressed to the publishing authority
Identity proof, two photographs and the soft copy of the notice
The fee receipt, paid in the applicant's own name
Government fee and time: Rs 1,100 for an adult and Rs 1,700 for a minor for the Central Gazette. Publication usually takes 4 to 6 weeks after a complete file reaches the department, and the e-Gazette copy carries the same legal weight as the printed one.
Two Whole States Inside Your District

Bhavnagar Was the First Princely State to Merge With India

The district administration's own record states it plainly. Maharaja Krishnakumarsinhji Gohil was the first ruler to merge his state with the Union of India, at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel's request, handing the administration over to the people's representative in 1948. He had already introduced village councils and Bhavnagar's first legislature, the Dharasabha, during his reign. Bhavnagar district today also contains the territory of two other former princely states, Palitana and Vallabhipur.

For paperwork that has a specific consequence. A family from the Palitana or Vallabhipur belt can hold records issued by an administration that was never Bhavnagar at all, and those records passed into the new arrangement early, in 1948. The document is valid and does not need replacing. What it needs is an affidavit that names the issuing state, the year, and the fact that the territory now forms part of Bhavnagar district in Gujarat, so the chain from that paper to your Aadhaar is complete.

If your village is in the Palitana or Vallabhipur belt: say so at the start. We word the affidavit to name the former state rather than quietly writing Bhavnagar over it, which is what causes a file to be questioned later.
Compare the Two Routes

Gujarat Gazette or Central Gazette for Bhavnagar?

Both are valid. Here is the honest difference, so you pick the right one the first time.

PointGujarat GazetteCentral Gazette of India
Published byDirectorate of Government Printing and Stationery, GandhinagarDepartment of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi
Distance from BhavnagarAbout 198 kilometres to GandhinagarFiled by post, so distance does not matter
Where it is acceptedMainly within GujaratEvery state, and by all Government and private bodies in India
Provident fund and old employer recordsAccepted for state level useAccepted by central offices without question
Workers from other statesQuestioned in their home stateAccepted in Bihar, Odisha, Uttar Pradesh and everywhere else
Seafaring and port documentsFine for a state department recordThe route maritime and central records work with
Passport and going abroadUsually not accepted for visa and attestationThe proof passport offices and embassies look for
Government feeAs set by the state, non-refundableRs 1,100 adult, Rs 1,700 minor
Our honest advice for Bhavnagar: for a state department record the Gujarat route is fine, though the press at Gandhinagar is nearly two hundred kilometres away. Where a provident fund claim, a seafaring document or a worker's home state record is involved, the Central Gazette settles it once. The state level detail is on our Gujarat name change guide, and the full comparison is in our name change agent in India guide.
For Alang Workers and Families

When the Yard on Your Papers Has Changed Hands

Alang, about fifty kilometres from the city, is the largest ship breaking yard in the world, and it has drawn workers here for decades from Bihar, Odisha, Uttar Pradesh and Jharkhand as well as from across Saurashtra. The plots there are held and re-held, contractors come and go, and the firm that issued a worker's card or appointment letter ten years ago may not be operating under that name today.

Years later, when a provident fund claim, a compensation matter or a background check comes up, that old document is compared with an Aadhaar made much more recently. If the spelling differs, or the employer no longer exists to confirm anything, the claim stalls. The affidavit has to name the old employer, the spelling used then, the years worked and your present records together, so the chain stands on its own. And where a worker's certificate came from Bihar or Odisha, only that state can correct it, which is why the Central Gazette is the route that helps both ends.

Before a provident fund claim: compare the name on the old employer record with your Aadhaar and bank account, letter by letter. Send both to us along with the years you worked, and keep the original card even if the firm has closed.
Save Your Money

Not Every Case in Bhavnagar Needs a Gazette

Many agents sell a Gazette for every case. That is not honest. An old paper naming Sihor, Palitana or a princely state is not a name change problem, and no Gazette will alter what a former administration wrote. That needs a properly worded affidavit instead. A name error in a birth certificate is corrected by the Registrar through the Bhavnagar Municipal Corporation, or the nagarpalika or gram panchayat outside corporation limits.

Caste, income and residence certificates are corrected by the issuing authority at the taluka or Mamlatdar office, and land record entries through the revenue side and the talati. A certificate issued in Bihar, Odisha or Uttar Pradesh is corrected by that state, and no Bhavnagar office can do it. A Gazette is for a full legal name change, and for cases where the same difference repeats across several records, which an old employer record usually does.

Your Complete Name Change Journey in Bhavnagar, Handled by NameChangeAgent

Most people think the Gazette is the finish line. It is the middle. Here is the whole journey, and where we stand beside you at each stage.

NameChangeAgent is a platform built for exactly this one job, done properly, in your own city. We are based in Delhi and we work with families across Bhavnagar entirely online, which means nobody has to take a day off, travel to Gandhinagar, or queue at a counter only to find out they brought the wrong paper. You send photographs of what you have on WhatsApp. We read them, tell you honestly which route your case needs, and then carry it through.

What makes a Bhavnagar file different is what you have already read on this page. Old capital names, former princely states inside your own district, an Alang employer that no longer operates, a certificate issued in Bihar or Odisha. A generic online form asks about none of that. We ask before a single word is drafted, because a file worded correctly the first time does not come back.

People Also Ask

Name Change in Bhavnagar, Frequently Asked Questions

Clear answers to the questions we hear most often.

How do I change my name legally in Bhavnagar?
In three steps. A notarised affidavit on stamp paper, a public notice in one English and one Gujarati newspaper, and a Gazette notification. We handle all three for you, fully online.
My old paper names Sihor or Umrala, is it still valid?
Yes. The Gohil rulers held capitals at Sejakpur, Umrala and Sihor before founding Bhavnagar in 1723, so older records carry those names. They are valid and the affidavit names each document, its authority and its year.
My document says Sejakpur, which I cannot find on a map, why?
Sejakpur was founded in 1194 and is known today as Ranpur. The place is real and still exists, only the name changed, and the affidavit should record both.
My village was part of Palitana or Vallabhipur state, what do I do?
Say so at the start. Both were separate princely states whose territory now forms part of Bhavnagar district. The affidavit should name the issuing state and the year rather than writing Bhavnagar over it.
My old Alang employer no longer operates, can I still claim provident fund?
Yes. The affidavit names the old employer, the spelling used then and the years worked, alongside your present records, so a provident fund office can follow the chain without needing the firm to confirm anything.
My certificate was issued in Bihar or Odisha, can a Bhavnagar office correct it?
No. A certificate is corrected by the authority that issued it, in the state that issued it. A Central Gazette notification is what works for both ends, because it is accepted in every state.
My old paper says Bhavnagar district but my Aadhaar says Botad, why?
Botad district was carved out of Bhavnagar district in 2013. Both district names are correct for their own period, and the affidavit should state that the village is the same.
How do I correct a name in a Bhavnagar birth certificate?
That is a Registrar correction through the Bhavnagar Municipal Corporation, or through the nagarpalika or gram panchayat if the birth was registered outside corporation limits. It is not a Gazette matter.
How much does a name change cost in Bhavnagar?
The Central Gazette Government fee is Rs 1,100 for an adult and Rs 1,700 for a minor. The Gujarat Gazette fee is separate and non-refundable, and newspaper and affidavit charges are extra. Our complete service starts at Rs 3,999.
Will the Gazette update my Aadhaar and provident fund automatically?
No. The Gazette is the proof of the change. You then apply to each authority separately, and each has its own process. We guide you through Aadhaar, PAN, provident fund, bank and college records after publication.
