To change your name legally in Canacona, you follow three steps. A notarised affidavit on stamp paper, a public notice in the newspaper, and then a Gazette notification. The Goa Official Gazette is printed at Panaji and name change notices appear in Series III. Since December 2025 this taluka is part of the new Kushavati district, and the affidavit should say so.
Karnataka Lies on Two Sides of This Taluka
Canacona is the southernmost taluka of Goa, and the state of Karnataka runs along both its eastern and southern boundary, in the Uttara Kannada district. Poinguinim sits only a few kilometres from that line. For families here, marriages, land, schooling, hospital visits and work regularly cross the border, and papers come back written the way a clerk in another state wrote them.
That decides which Gazette to take. The Goa Official Gazette is used mainly inside Goa, so taking it here means a fresh argument every time a document is checked on the other side. The Central Gazette of India is accepted in Karnataka and in every other state, so it settles the question in a single publication. For this taluka it is usually the sensible choice rather than the optional one.
The Central Gazette Process for a Name Change in Canacona
This is the route accepted everywhere in India and abroad. Here is exactly what happens at each step.
Prepare and Notarise the Affidavit
A sworn declaration on non-judicial stamp paper, signed with witnesses and attested by a Notary Public or First Class Magistrate at Chaudi.
Publish the Newspaper Notice
A public notice carrying exactly the same wording as your affidavit, so the change is on public record.
File With the Department of Publication
The complete file goes to the Controller of Publications, Civil Lines, Delhi, and your notice appears in Part IV of the Gazette of India.

What Goes Into Your Gazette File
Since December 2025 This Taluka Is in Kushavati District
Goa was reconstituted into three districts at the end of December 2025. Canacona, along with Quepem, Sanguem and Dharbandora, was moved out of South Goa into a new district named Kushavati, with its headquarters at Quepem. The new district administration has its own official presence now, and it covers close to two thousand square kilometres of southern and eastern Goa.
What that means for you is straightforward. Documents from before that date name South Goa and documents issued since name Kushavati, and both are correct for their time. Neither needs correcting. The affidavit simply has to say that the village is the same and that the district was reorganised in December 2025. Most drafts still leave that line out, because the change is only months old.

This Was the Last Part of Goa to Be Incorporated
Canacona was a district of the kingdom of Soonda. When that kingdom was invaded from Mysore, its ruler ceded the territory to the Portuguese in 1791, and Canacona was merged into Goa in 1794. That is later than every other taluka. The coastal talukas of Tiswadi, Bardez and Salcete had been administered from Old Goa since the early fifteen hundreds, so the gap in written record keeping here runs to nearly three centuries.
The practical effect is that families here often cannot produce a certificate going back as far as a coastal family can, and the oldest paper may be a land entry, a temple record or a church register rather than a school document. That is not a weakness in your file. What matters is that whatever your oldest record is, the affidavit names it, dates it, says who issued it, and connects it to your present identity without a gap.
Not Every Case in Canacona Needs a Gazette
Many agents sell a Gazette for every case. That is not honest. A small spelling mistake is usually fixed with a notarised affidavit and your existing proof at each authority. A birth entry goes through the Chief Registrar of Births and Deaths at Panaji and then the Civil Registrar for Canacona, not through a Gazette at all.
This matters especially for community certificates. A Scheduled Tribe, Scheduled Caste, other backward class, income or residence certificate is corrected by the authority that issued it, working from your existing records, and a Gazette does not do that job. A marriage in Goa is not legally recognised unless registered with the Civil Registrar, so where the change follows a marriage that registration comes first. A Gazette is for a full legal name change, and for cases where the same difference repeats across several records.
