Name Change Agent in Cuncolim

The gaonkars of this village were organised into twelve vangods, or clans, and those clan names are recorded in a settled order of precedence, Mhal, Shetcar, Naik, Mangro, Shet, Tombddo, Porob, Sidakalo, Lokakalo, Bandekar, Rounom and Becklo. Read a second published list and several of them come out differently, as Shetkar, Xette, Tombdo, Rouno and Benklo. The clan is the same. Only the spelling moved, because these names were written down over centuries by different hands and in different scripts.

That matters more here than almost anywhere, because those clan names became family surnames. So the very oldest layer of a Cuncolim family's identity already exists in more than one form, before you even reach a school certificate or an Aadhaar. The affidavit has to list each version alongside the document it appears on and declare that all of them belong to one person. That is the part a standard draft leaves out.

After the events of 1583, the lands of Cuncolim and the neighbouring villages of Velim, Assolna, Ambelim and Veroda were confiscated and entrusted to the Condado of the Marquis of Fronteira. That arrangement shaped the land records of this belt for a very long time, so an old paper here can name a Portuguese noble estate rather than an individual or the village Comunidade. The village itself carried an older name too, Kumkumahalli, from the kumkum that was made here, which is where Cuncolim comes from.

A Gazette notification does not correct a land record, and nobody should sell you one for that. Land and Comunidade entries go through the registration and revenue side on their own applications. What the Gazette does is settle your identity once and publicly, so that when you approach those offices there is a single published record proving the old name and the new name are the same person. That order saves people from paying twice.

The temple of Shri Shantadurga Cuncolikarin, the deity that carries this village's own name, stands at Fatorpa, about seven kilometres away, where it was moved centuries ago. Fatorpa is in Quepem taluka, and since 31 December 2025 Quepem taluka is part of the new Kushavati district rather than South Goa. So a family from Cuncolim can have its village records in one district and its temple records in another.

That comes up more often than you would expect. Temple registers, trust papers and old family records tied to the deity may carry a district name that no longer matches your Aadhaar. Neither is wrong. The affidavit simply names each document, says which district it was issued under and when, and states that the person is the same. We word that for you rather than leaving an officer to work out two districts and an old spelling at once.
