To change your name legally in Junagadh, you follow three steps. A notarised affidavit on stamp paper, a public notice in two newspapers, one English and one Gujarati, and then a Gazette notification. If your family paper names Sorath, Junagadh State or a district that has since been split, it is still valid, and the affidavit has to explain the chain.
Between 1947 and 1948 The Administration Here Changed Hands Three Times
Junagadh has a documented history no other district in India shares. The Nawab signed an instrument of accession to Pakistan on 15 August 1947. In late September a provisional administration called the Arzi Hukumat was formed in Bombay under Samaldas Gandhi. On 8 November the state's Dewan, Shah Nawaz Bhutto, wrote to the Indian Regional Commissioner at Rajkot inviting the Government of India to take over the administration, which it did on 9 November 1947. A referendum was then held on 20 February 1948, in which of roughly one hundred and ninety thousand votes cast, only ninety one favoured Pakistan.
We set that out because of what it means for paperwork, not for any other reason. A certificate, land entry or municipal record dated inside those six months came from an administration that was in transition, and it may name an authority that existed only briefly. Such a paper is not invalid and it is not a forgery. What it needs is an affidavit that names the document, the authority that issued it and the exact date, and connects it to your present identity without asking anyone to interpret history. That is a line no standard draft contains.

What Goes Into Your Gazette File
This District Has Been Split Twice, in 1997 and Again in 2013
Porbandar district was carved out of Junagadh in 1997, and Gir Somnath district was carved out of it again in 2013, with its headquarters at Veraval. Most districts in India have been split once. This one has been split twice inside a single generation, so a family here can hold three papers naming three different districts for the same village, all of them correct for the year they were issued.
Go back further and it multiplies. The old Junagadh state contained smaller states of its own, and Mangrol, Babariyawad, Bantva Manavadar and Sardargarh Bantva each acceded separately in that period. Before all of it, the region was known as Sorath. So an old land record or temple register can name a small state, a region and a district that no longer line up with anything on your Aadhaar. Every one of those shifts has to be stated plainly with its year, or a verifier reading two papers sees a contradiction that is not actually there.
Gujarat Gazette or Central Gazette for Junagadh?
Both are valid. Here is the honest difference, so you pick the right one the first time.
| Point | Gujarat Gazette | Central Gazette of India |
|---|---|---|
| Published by | Directorate of Government Printing and Stationery, Gandhinagar | Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi |
| Distance from Junagadh | About 330 kilometres to Gandhinagar | Filed by post, so distance does not matter |
| Where it is accepted | Mainly within Gujarat | Every state, and by all Government and private bodies in India |
| Very old family records | Fine for a state department record | One published proof every office will accept |
| Family working abroad | Carries no weight outside India | Recognised for attestation and overseas use |
| Passport and going abroad | Usually not accepted for visa and attestation | The proof passport offices and embassies look for |
| How you apply | Through the state e-Gazette portal | File posted to the Department of Publication |
| Government fee | As set by the state, non-refundable | Rs 1,100 adult, Rs 1,700 minor |
Sorath, Junagarh and a City Named After Its Own Old Fort
Junagadh means the old fort, and the city sits at the foot of Mount Girnar around the Uparkot. In English records it is written both Junagadh and Junagarh, and the wider region has long been called Sorath, a name that appears on land papers and temple registers but is not an administrative unit today. The state was ruled by the Babi dynasty from the middle of the seventeenth century, and before that by the Chudasama Rajputs and the Sultans of Gujarat.
All of which means one family can hold papers describing the same address as Sorath, as Junagadh State, as Junagarh, and as Junagadh district in Gujarat. We treat every version as evidence rather than choosing one and hoping. The affidavit names each document, the authority, the year and the place exactly as written, then ties it to your present address so the chain reads as one place and one line of people from the oldest record to the newest.
Not Every Case in Junagadh Needs a Gazette
Many agents sell a Gazette for every case. That is not honest. An old paper naming Sorath, a former small state, or a district that has since been split is not a name change problem at all, and no Gazette will alter what an earlier authority wrote. Those need a properly worded affidavit, not a notification, and anyone charging you for a Gazette to fix them is charging for the wrong thing.
A name error in a birth certificate is corrected by the Registrar through the Junagadh Municipal Corporation, or the nagarpalika or gram panchayat outside corporation limits. Caste, income and residence certificates are corrected by the issuing authority at the taluka or Mamlatdar office, and land record entries through the revenue side and the talati. A Gazette is for a full legal name change, after marriage, after divorce, for numerology or by personal choice, and for cases where the same difference repeats across several records.

Your Complete Name Change Journey in Junagadh, Handled by NameChangeAgent
Most people think the Gazette is the finish line. It is the middle. Here is the whole journey, and where we stand beside you at each stage.
NameChangeAgent is a platform built for exactly this one job, done properly, in your own city. We are based in Delhi and we work with families across Junagadh entirely online, which means nobody has to take a day off, travel over three hundred kilometres to the state press at Gandhinagar, or queue at a counter only to find out they brought the wrong paper. You send photographs of what you have on WhatsApp. We read them, tell you honestly which route your case needs, and then carry it through.
What makes a Junagadh file different is what you have already read on this page. A paper dated in the 1947 to 1948 window, a village that has moved district twice, a record naming Sorath or a former small state. A generic online form asks about none of that, and an agent who has not read this history will simply write Junagadh over everything and hope. We ask before a single word is drafted, because a file worded correctly the first time does not come back.
