Name Change Agent in Nadiad

Nadiad's most famous son shows this better than any explanation. Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was born here in 1875, at his mother's parental home, while the family's native place was Karamsad, a village that today lies in Anand district. The custom of a first child being born at the mother's parental home has not gone away, and this city has long been a medical centre for the whole Charotar belt, so a very large number of people carry a birth certificate that names Nadiad while every other family paper names a village somewhere else.

Indian forms treat these as separate fields. Place of birth, permanent address and native place each appear on passports, caste and domicile certificates, service books and school records, and people fill them inconsistently across a lifetime. None of it is an error. But a name change file is checked on the name and the address together, so the affidavit has to name your place of birth exactly as printed on the birth record, your present address as printed on your identity proof, and your native village if any paper carries it, and state plainly that all of them belong to one person.

Take the same example one step further. Sardar Patel's date of birth was never registered anywhere. The date the whole country now uses, 31 October 1875, comes from his matriculation certificate, and he chose it himself while filling in a form. That is recorded on the Indian National Congress's own account of his life. For a man of that stature, the school certificate is the operative document, because nothing earlier exists.

Lakhs of families are in exactly that position, and older ones in this district especially. If there is no registered birth entry, the school leaving certificate becomes the date of record, and every later document copies it. That is legally workable and it is very common. What it is not is a licence to change the date casually later, and it is not a name change problem. A name change goes through the affidavit, notice and Gazette. Nadiad is known as Saksharbhoomi, the land of the literate, and it holds one of the highest literacy rates in Gujarat along with a long line of Gujarati writers and scholars. It was constituted as a municipality in 1866, which makes its municipal records among the oldest in the state. The city has also been the district headquarters of Kheda through every reorganisation, including 1997, when Anand was carved out and the district lost half its territory while Nadiad kept the collectorate.

Here the opposite is often true, and an old school register, a municipal entry or a family paper can usually be traced and named. The affidavit then has real documents to anchor to rather than assertions.
