To change your name legally in Nadiad, you follow three steps. A notarised affidavit on stamp paper, a public notice in two newspapers, one English and one Gujarati, and then a Gazette notification. If your birth certificate names Nadiad but your family village is elsewhere, that is not an error, and the affidavit has to say so.
Your Birthplace and Your Native Place Are Not the Same Thing
Nadiad's most famous son shows this better than any explanation. Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was born here in 1875, at his mother's parental home, while the family's native place was Karamsad, a village that today lies in Anand district. The custom of a first child being born at the mother's parental home has not gone away, and this city has long been a medical centre for the whole Charotar belt, so a very large number of people carry a birth certificate that names Nadiad while every other family paper names a village somewhere else.
Indian forms treat these as separate fields. Place of birth, permanent address and native place each appear on passports, caste and domicile certificates, service books and school records, and people fill them inconsistently across a lifetime. None of it is an error. But a name change file is checked on the name and the address together, so the affidavit has to name your place of birth exactly as printed on the birth record, your present address as printed on your identity proof, and your native village if any paper carries it, and state plainly that all of them belong to one person.
The Central Gazette Process for a Name Change in Nadiad
This is the route accepted everywhere in India and abroad. Here is exactly what happens at each step.
Prepare and Notarise the Affidavit
A sworn declaration on non-judicial stamp paper, signed with two witnesses and attested by a Notary Public or First Class Magistrate in Nadiad.
Publish in English and Gujarati Newspapers
One English daily and one Gujarati daily, carrying the same old name, new name, address and affidavit date.
File With the Department of Publication
The complete file goes to the Controller of Publications, Civil Lines, Delhi, and your notice appears in Part IV of the Gazette of India.

What Goes Into Your Gazette File
For Many Families the School Certificate Is the Only Date That Exists
Take the same example one step further. Sardar Patel's date of birth was never registered anywhere. The date the whole country now uses, 31 October 1875, comes from his matriculation certificate, and he chose it himself while filling in a form. That is recorded on the Indian National Congress's own account of his life. For a man of that stature, the school certificate is the operative document, because nothing earlier exists.
Lakhs of families are in exactly that position, and older ones in this district especially. If there is no registered birth entry, the school leaving certificate becomes the date of record, and every later document copies it. That is legally workable and it is very common. What it is not is a licence to change the date casually later, and it is not a name change problem. A name change goes through the affidavit, notice and Gazette. A date correction is a separate application to the school board or the Registrar, with its own proof, which our date of birth correction guide explains.

Saksharbhoomi, and a Municipality Keeping Records Since 1866
Nadiad is known as Saksharbhoomi, the land of the literate, and it holds one of the highest literacy rates in Gujarat along with a long line of Gujarati writers and scholars. It was constituted as a municipality in 1866, which makes its municipal records among the oldest in the state. The city has also been the district headquarters of Kheda through every reorganisation, including 1997, when Anand was carved out and the district lost half its territory while Nadiad kept the collectorate.
For a name change file that is genuinely good news. In many parts of India the difficulty is that nothing old survives. Here the opposite is often true, and an old school register, a municipal entry or a family paper can usually be traced and named. The affidavit then has real documents to anchor to rather than assertions. If your village now falls in Anand district, our Anand page covers that side of the record, because papers issued before 1997 name Kheda for villages that are now in Anand.
Not Every Case in Nadiad Needs a Gazette
Many agents sell a Gazette for every case. That is not honest. A birth certificate naming Nadiad while your village is elsewhere is not a name change problem and needs no Gazette, only a properly worded affidavit. A date of birth correction is a separate application to the school board or the Registrar, and a Gazette does not do that job either.
A name error in a birth certificate is corrected by the Registrar through the Nadiad Municipality, or the nagarpalika or gram panchayat where the birth was registered. Caste, income and residence certificates are corrected by the issuing authority at the taluka or Mamlatdar office, and land record entries through the revenue side and the talati. A Gazette is for a full legal name change, after marriage, after divorce, for numerology or by personal choice, and for cases where the same difference repeats across several records.

Your Complete Name Change Journey in Nadiad, Handled by NameChangeAgent
Most people think the Gazette is the finish line. It is the middle. Here is the whole journey, and where we stand beside you at each stage.
NameChangeAgent is a platform built for exactly this one job, done properly, in your own city. We are based in Delhi and we work with families across Nadiad entirely online, which means nobody has to take a day off, travel to the state press at Gandhinagar, or queue at a counter only to find out they brought the wrong paper. You send photographs of what you have on WhatsApp. We read them, tell you honestly which route your case needs, and then carry it through.
What makes a Nadiad file different is what you have already read on this page. A birth certificate naming this city while the family village is elsewhere, a date that came from a matriculation certificate because nothing earlier was registered, a village that moved to Anand district in 1997. A generic online form asks about none of that, and it certainly does not tell you when a Gazette is the wrong tool. We ask before a single word is drafted, because a file worded correctly the first time does not come back.
