Quick Answer

To change your name legally in Anand, you follow three steps. A notarised affidavit on stamp paper, a public notice in two newspapers, one English and one Gujarati, and then a Gazette notification. If any family document was issued abroad or names Kaira or Kheda district, take the Central Gazette, because it is the only route accepted everywhere and for attestation.

If Your Family Lives Abroad

Your Foreign Document Is Frozen on the Date You Left

The district administration's own description of Anand says it is home to the maximum number of Non Resident Gujarati families spread all over the world. That is not marketing, it is the official line, and anyone from Charotar already knows it. Almost every extended family here has members in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, East Africa or the Gulf.

Here is what that does to paperwork. A foreign passport, an OCI card, a green card or a certificate issued overseas carries your name exactly as it was spelt on the day you emigrated, sometimes forty years ago. Indian records have been re-entered, digitised and corrected many times since. Neither side is wrong, and neither can fix the other, because no office in India can amend a document issued by another country. That gap surfaces at the worst moments, an OCI renewal, a property transfer, an inheritance, a bank KYC. What bridges it is a Central Gazette notification, which is accepted in every state, recognised for attestation and apostille, and publishes both names as belonging to one person.

Send both sides before we draft: your Indian identity proof and a scan of the foreign document, whichever it is. Tell us the year you or your family member went abroad. The affidavit then names each document, the country and authority that issued it, and the year, so the chain reads in one direction only.
Central Gazette

The Central Gazette Process for a Name Change in Anand

This is the route accepted everywhere in India and abroad. Here is exactly what happens at each step.

Prepare and Notarise the Affidavit

A sworn declaration on non-judicial stamp paper, signed with two witnesses and attested by a Notary Public or First Class Magistrate in Anand.

Publish in English and Gujarati Newspapers

One English daily and one Gujarati daily, carrying the same old name, new name, address and affidavit date.

File With the Department of Publication

The complete file goes to the Controller of Publications, Civil Lines, Delhi, and your notice appears in Part IV of the Gazette of India.

Step 1 in Detail

What Your Name Change Affidavit Must Contain

Your old name exactly as printed on your existing documents
Your new name, spelt exactly as you want it recorded forever
Your house number, society, village and taluka exactly as on your proof
Every other spelling, with the document, country and year it came from
A declaration that all of them belong to the same person
Your signature, two witness signatures, and the notary stamp with date
Decide the initials once, not later: initials are the biggest cause of rejection in Gujarat, and abroad the middle name is often dropped altogether. Choose between A. B. Patel, A B Patel or the full expanded form, and keep it identical on all three documents.
Step 2 in Detail

The English and Gujarati Newspaper Rules

Two papers are needed, one English and one Gujarati, not just one
The notice must repeat the same old name, new name and address as the affidavit
It must mention the date on which the affidavit was made
The advertisement usually appears in the classified section
Keep the original dated cuttings showing the paper name
Even one letter spelt differently can get your whole file returned
Cost of this step: two budget dailies cost about Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,500 together, while premium national papers can cost Rs 2,500 to Rs 5,000. If the Gazette will later be attested for use abroad, a premium English daily is worth the extra.
Step 3 in Detail

What Goes Into Your Gazette File

The signed Gazette application form in the prescribed proforma
The original notarised affidavit
Original cuttings of both newspaper advertisements
A request letter addressed to the publishing authority
Identity proof, two photographs and the soft copy of the notice
The fee receipt, paid in the applicant's own name
Government fee and time: Rs 1,100 for an adult and Rs 1,700 for a minor for the Central Gazette. Publication usually takes 4 to 6 weeks after a complete file reaches the department, and the e-Gazette copy carries the same legal weight as the printed one.
Three District Names, One Village

Kaira, Then Kheda, Then Anand, and Amul Still Says Kaira

Under British administration this belt was in Kaira district. After independence it became Kheda district, which came into existence on 1 August 1949 with Anand as one of its talukas. Then on 1 October 1997 the state created six new districts and Anand was carved out of Kheda as a separate district of its own. So three district names have covered the same village inside a century.

The clearest proof of that is on your own doorstep. Amul is known as Anand Milk Union Limited, but the cooperative's registered name remains the Kaira District Co-operative Milk Producers' Union Limited. So an old employment record, a share certificate or a milk society paper from the dairy can carry the word Kaira, a district name that has not been in use for decades, replaced by Kheda, which no longer covers Anand at all. None of it is an error. The affidavit has to name each document, the authority, the year and the district as written, then state that the village is the same throughout.

One more layer worth mentioning: not all of Charotar was in British Kaira district. Some villages here were under Baroda State, which is why Bhadran was once called the Paris of the Gaekwad state. Our Vadodara page explains that side of the record.
Compare the Two Routes

Gujarat Gazette or Central Gazette for Anand?

Both are valid. Here is the honest difference, so you pick the right one the first time.

PointGujarat GazetteCentral Gazette of India

Use abroad, attestation and apostilleCarries no weight outside IndiaThe document that gets attested and apostilled

How you applyThrough the state e-Gazette portalFile posted to the Department of Publication
Government feeAs set by the state, non-refundableRs 1,100 adult, Rs 1,700 minor
Our honest advice for Anand: if every document is Indian and the change is only for a Gujarat department record, the state route is fine. For almost everyone in Charotar with family abroad it is not the right choice, because a state Gazette cannot be apostilled for use in another country. Take the Central Gazette once. The state level detail is on our Gujarat name change guide, and the full comparison is in our name change agent in India guide.
Which Address Do You Write

Vallabh Vidyanagar and Karamsad Are Not the Same as Anand

The Anand belt grew along the road through Vallabh Vidyanagar and Karamsad, and both are places in their own right. Vallabh Vidyanagar is an education township, home to Sardar Patel University, and Karamsad is Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel's native village with a large medical campus. Thousands of students from across India carry a hostel or college address here. Peripheral villages such as Chikhodra, Lambhvel, Gamdi and Bakrol are part of the same urban stretch.

So one person's documents can say Vallabh Vidyanagar on a degree, Karamsad on a hospital record, Anand on an Aadhaar and a village name on a land paper, all for what is effectively one address. That is not a mistake and none of it needs correcting. But a name change file is checked on the name and the address together, so we settle one exact format from your identity proof before drafting, and record the other versions in the affidavit rather than leaving an officer to work out whether four addresses mean four people.

If you are a student here: use your permanent home address on the affidavit, not the hostel or college one, and tell us both. A temporary address on a Gazette notification causes problems later at every verification.
Save Your Money

Not Every Case in Anand Needs a Gazette

Many agents sell a Gazette for every case. That is not honest. A Gazette cannot change what a foreign country printed on a passport or an OCI card, and no agent should charge you as if it can. What it does is publish your Indian identity so that both sides can be matched. The foreign document itself is corrected only by that country's own authority, through their own process.

A name error in a birth certificate is corrected by the Registrar through the Anand Municipal Corporation, or the nagarpalika or gram panchayat outside its limits. Caste, income and residence certificates are corrected by the issuing authority at the taluka or Mamlatdar office, and land record entries through the revenue side and the talati. A Gazette is for a full legal name change, after marriage, after divorce, for numerology or by personal choice, and for cases where the same difference repeats across records from more than one country.

Your Complete Name Change Journey in Anand, Handled by NameChangeAgent

Most people think the Gazette is the finish line. It is the middle. Here is the whole journey, and where we stand beside you at each stage.

NameChangeAgent is a platform built for exactly this one job, done properly, in your own city. We are based in Delhi and we work with families across Anand entirely online, which matters more here than almost anywhere, because half the family is often in another country. Papers come to us on WhatsApp from Anand and from abroad on the same thread, and nobody has to fly in or queue at a counter to find out they brought the wrong document.

What makes an Anand file different is what you have already read on this page. A foreign passport or OCI card frozen on the year of emigration, a dairy record naming Kaira district, a degree from Vallabh Vidyanagar and an Aadhaar saying Anand. A generic online form asks about none of that. We ask before a single word is drafted, because a file worded correctly the first time does not come back, and a Gazette that has to be apostilled later cannot afford a second attempt.

People Also Ask

Name Change in Anand, Frequently Asked Questions

Clear answers to the questions we hear most often.

How do I change my name legally in Anand?
In three steps. A notarised affidavit on stamp paper, a public notice in one English and one Gujarati newspaper, and a Gazette notification. We handle all three for you, fully online.
My foreign passport or OCI card spells my name differently, is that a problem?
It becomes one at an OCI renewal, a property transfer or a bank KYC. The foreign document carries the spelling used when you emigrated. A Central Gazette notification publishes both names as one person and bridges the gap.
Can an Indian office correct my foreign document?
No. A document issued by another country is corrected only by that country's own authority. What India can give you is a Gazette notification that both sides accept.
Which Gazette can be attested or apostilled for use abroad?
The Central Gazette of India. A Gujarat Gazette carries no weight outside India and cannot be apostilled, so for anyone with family abroad the central route is the right one.
My old paper names Kaira or Kheda district, is it still valid?
Yes. This belt was Kaira district under British administration, then Kheda district from 1 August 1949, and Anand was carved out as a separate district on 1 October 1997. All three are correct for their own period.
Why does my Amul dairy record say Kaira?
Because the cooperative's registered name is still the Kaira District Co-operative Milk Producers' Union Limited, even though it is known as Amul, or Anand Milk Union Limited. The record is genuine and the affidavit should explain it.
I am a student here, should I write my hostel address?
No. Use your permanent home address on the affidavit and the notice, and tell us the college address separately. A temporary address on a Gazette causes problems at every later verification.
How do I correct a name in an Anand birth certificate?
That is a Registrar correction through the Anand Municipal Corporation, or through the nagarpalika or gram panchayat if the birth was registered outside its limits. It is not a Gazette matter.
How much does a name change cost in Anand?
The Central Gazette Government fee is Rs 1,100 for an adult and Rs 1,700 for a minor. The Gujarat Gazette fee is separate and non-refundable, and newspaper and affidavit charges are extra. Our complete service starts at Rs 3,999.
Will the Gazette update my Aadhaar and passport automatically?
No. The Gazette is the proof of the change. You then apply to each authority separately, and each has its own process. We guide you through Aadhaar, PAN, passport, bank, property and college records after publication.
