Quick Answer

To change your name legally in Ponda, you follow three steps. A notarised affidavit on stamp paper, a public notice in the newspaper, and then a Gazette notification. The Goa Official Gazette is printed at Panaji and name change notices appear in Series III. The Central Gazette is filed in Delhi and accepted in every state and for passport work.

Check This First

Your Papers May Say North Goa, but You Are in South Goa Now

Until January 2015 Ponda was part of North Goa district. From that month it was shifted to South Goa, with Margao as its district headquarters. This is the most recent district change anywhere in the state, and it is recent enough that a very large number of people here hold documents from both sides of it. A school certificate or a land paper from a few years ago says North Goa, while an Aadhaar updated since says South Goa.

Neither document is wrong and neither needs correcting on its own. But a name change file is checked on the name and the address together, so a verification officer comparing the two sees a different district and asks. The affidavit has to say plainly that the village is the same and the taluka was moved from one district to the other in 2015. Standard drafts leave this out, and that is exactly when a Ponda file comes back.

You will still see North Goa in places: older records, some listings and even a few websites have not caught up with the change. That is normal. What matters is that your own file carries the wording on your identity proof and explains the shift.
Central Gazette

The Central Gazette Process for a Name Change in Ponda

This is the route accepted everywhere in India and abroad. Here is exactly what happens at each step.

Prepare and Notarise the Affidavit

A sworn declaration on non-judicial stamp paper, signed with witnesses and attested by a Notary Public or First Class Magistrate in Ponda.

Publish the Newspaper Notice

A public notice carrying exactly the same wording as your affidavit, so the change is on public record.

File With the Department of Publication

The complete file goes to the Controller of Publications, Civil Lines, Delhi, and your notice appears in Part IV of the Gazette of India.

Step 1 in Detail

What Your Name Change Affidavit Must Contain

Your old name exactly as printed on your existing documents
Your new name, spelt exactly as you want it recorded forever
Your house number, vaddo, village and taluka, exactly as on your proof
The documents affected, such as Aadhaar, PAN, passport and bank passbook
A declaration that both names belong to the same person
Your signature, witness signatures, and the notary stamp with date
The district line needs a sentence of its own: where your old paper names North Goa and your identity proof names South Goa, the affidavit should record both along with the year of the change, rather than quietly using one and hoping nobody compares.
Step 2 in Detail

The Newspaper Notice Rules

The notice must repeat the same old name, new name and address as the affidavit
It must mention the date on which the affidavit was made
For the Central Gazette, one Hindi and one English daily are required
The advertisement usually appears in the classified section
Keep the original dated cuttings showing the paper name
Even one letter spelt differently can get your whole file returned
Cost of this step: budget dailies cost about Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,500, while premium national papers can cost Rs 2,500 to Rs 5,000. We place the notices and collect the cuttings for your file.
Step 3 in Detail

What Goes Into Your Gazette File

The signed Gazette application form in the prescribed proforma
The original notarised affidavit
Original cuttings of the newspaper advertisements
A request letter addressed to the publishing authority
Identity proof, two photographs and the soft copy of the notice
The fee receipt, paid in the applicant's own name
Government fee and time: Rs 1,100 for an adult and Rs 1,700 for a minor for the Central Gazette. Publication usually takes 4 to 6 weeks after a complete file reaches the department, and the e-Gazette copy carries the same legal weight as the printed one.
For Very Old Papers

This Taluka Was Once Antruz Mahal

Ponda was part of the New Conquests, the outer talukas that came under Portuguese rule only in the eighteenth century, long after Tiswadi, Bardez and Salcete. In records of that period the taluka appears as Antruz, or Antruz Mahal, and old postal addresses in these talukas were even abbreviated N.C. for New Conquests. So a very old family paper may name a place you will not find on a modern list at all.

There is a second thread that runs through many families here. In the second half of the sixteenth century, households and their temple deities moved into Antruz Mahal from Ilhas, Bardez and Salcete, which is why so many of Goa's best known temples stand in this one taluka. The Mangueshi deity, for instance, came from Kushasthali, today's Cortalim in Salcete. For a name change file that can matter, because a family's earliest surviving record sometimes belongs to a different taluka entirely.

Send whatever you have: a paper naming Antruz, an old Comunidade record or a certificate from another taluka are all useful. We read them before advising and place them properly in the chain.

Our honest advice for Ponda: for a state department record the Goa route is fine. This is the industrial heart of the state, and for a company record, a bank, a passport or work outside Goa the Central Gazette settles the question once. The state level detail is on our Goa name change guide, and the full comparison is in our name change agent in India guide.
For Factory and Company Staff

Goa's Industrial Belt Runs Through This Taluka

Ponda is the state's main industrial hub, with estates at Kundaim, Bethora, Madkai and Tisk, and it has been Goa's fastest growing city for years. Most of that employment is private rather than Government, and that changes the paperwork in a useful way. A private company does not need a Ministry of Home Affairs deed. Your employer simply updates its records once you produce the Gazette copy and your corrected identity documents.

The order that works is the same for everyone here. Correct the Aadhaar first, then the PAN, because the provident fund and the bank both follow the PAN name. Then give the Gazette copy and the updated documents to the establishment section. Doing it the other way round, with the employer file corrected before the Aadhaar, is what leaves people with a provident fund account that no longer matches anything.

If you are in Government service: the rule is different. You also need a name change deed in the format prescribed under the Ministry of Home Affairs memorandum of 1987, and we prepare that along with the Gazette file.
Save Your Money

Not Every Case in Ponda Needs a Gazette

Many agents sell a Gazette for every case. That is not honest. A small spelling mistake is usually fixed with a notarised affidavit and your existing proof at each authority. A birth entry goes through the Chief Registrar of Births and Deaths at Panaji and then the Civil Registrar for Ponda, not through a Gazette at all.

A marriage in Goa is not legally recognised unless registered with the Civil Registrar, so if your change follows a marriage, that registration comes first and becomes the supporting proof. Land and Comunidade entries go through the registration and revenue side. A Gazette is for a full legal name change, and for cases where the same difference repeats across several records.

People Also Ask

Name Change in Ponda, Frequently Asked Questions

Clear answers to the questions we hear most often.

How do I change my name legally in Ponda?
In three steps. A notarised affidavit on stamp paper, a public notice in the newspaper, and a Gazette notification. We handle all three for you, fully online.
My old paper says North Goa but my Aadhaar says South Goa, is that a problem?
No. Ponda was in North Goa until January 2015 and was then shifted to South Goa. Neither document needs correcting, but the affidavit should state that the village is the same and name the year of the change.
Which district should I write on the form?
South Goa, if that is what your identity proof says. Use exactly the wording on your proof throughout, and let the affidavit record the older version as well.
My very old family paper names Antruz, what is that?
Antruz, or Antruz Mahal, is the old name of this taluka from the period of the New Conquests. It refers to the same place, and the affidavit should explain that chain.
My oldest record belongs to another taluka, does that matter?
Not at all. Many families here moved into this taluka from Ilhas, Bardez or Salcete centuries ago, so an early record from elsewhere is common. We place it correctly in the chain.
I work in a factory here, is my process different?
For a private company, no deed is needed. Correct the Aadhaar first, then the PAN, and give your employer the Gazette copy with the updated documents. Government service needs the prescribed deed as well.
Which Gazette series does a name change go into?
Series III of the Official Gazette of the Government of Goa, printed at Panaji. The central equivalent is Part IV of the Gazette of India.
How do I correct a name in a birth certificate here?
In two steps. Apply to the Chief Registrar of Births and Deaths at Panaji with proof of the error, and then approach the Civil Registrar for Ponda. A Gazette is not required for it.
How much does a name change cost in Ponda?
The Central Gazette Government fee is Rs 1,100 for an adult and Rs 1,700 for a minor. The Goa Gazette fee is separate, and newspaper and affidavit charges are extra. Our complete service starts at Rs 3,999.
How long does the whole process take?
The Central Gazette usually takes about 4 to 6 weeks after a complete file is submitted. The affidavit is ready in a day or two and the newspaper notice within a week.
