Quick Answer

To change your name legally in Vadodara, you follow three steps. A notarised affidavit on stamp paper, a public notice in two newspapers, one English and one Gujarati, and then a Gazette notification. If your degree says Baroda and your Aadhaar says Vadodara, that is not an error and it does not need correcting, but the affidavit must explain it.

The City Changed Its Name in 1974, The University Never Did

Baroda was officially renamed Vadodara in 1974. The university did not follow. To this day it is The Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda, it teaches more than forty seven thousand students, and its website is still msubaroda.ac.in. So a degree or a marksheet issued this year carries the word Baroda, while the Aadhaar of the person holding it says Vadodara. That is not an old records problem from decades ago. It is happening on fresh certificates right now.

Most people only discover it at the worst moment, during a job verification, a passport application or an overseas admission, when someone compares the two documents and asks which city the applicant is from. Nothing is wrong with either paper. The university carries its founder's name and his state's name, and it is entitled to. What is needed is an affidavit that names the university exactly as printed, records that the city was renamed in 1974, and declares that Baroda and Vadodara are the same place and the holder is one person.

Send your degree and your Aadhaar together: copy the university name letter for letter from the certificate, including the word Baroda. Do not modernise it to Vadodara on the affidavit, because the record you are matching is the one already printed.
Central Gazette

The Central Gazette Process for a Name Change in Vadodara

This is the route accepted everywhere in India and abroad. Here is exactly what happens at each step.

Prepare and Notarise the Affidavit

A sworn declaration on non-judicial stamp paper, signed with two witnesses and attested by a Notary Public or First Class Magistrate in Vadodara.

Publish in English and Gujarati Newspapers

One English daily and one Gujarati daily, carrying the same old name, new name, address and affidavit date.

File With the Department of Publication

The complete file goes to the Controller of Publications, Civil Lines, Delhi, and your notice appears in Part IV of the Gazette of India.

Step 1 in Detail

What Your Name Change Affidavit Must Contain

Your old name exactly as printed on your existing documents
Your new name, spelt exactly as you want it recorded forever
Your flat or house number, society, area and city as on your proof
Any institution or place named Baroda on your certificates
A declaration that both names belong to the same person
Your signature, two witness signatures, and the notary stamp with date
Decide the initials once, not later: initials are the biggest cause of rejection in Gujarat. Choose between A. B. Patel, A B Patel or the full expanded form, fix the spacing and the surname spelling, and keep it identical on all three documents.
Step 2 in Detail

The English and Gujarati Newspaper Rules

Two papers are needed, one English and one Gujarati, not just one
The notice must repeat the same old name, new name and address as the affidavit
It must mention the date on which the affidavit was made
The advertisement usually appears in the classified section
Keep the original dated cuttings showing the paper name
Even one letter spelt differently can get your whole file returned
Cost of this step: two budget dailies cost about Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,500 together, while premium national papers can cost Rs 2,500 to Rs 5,000. We place both notices and collect the cuttings for your file.
Step 3 in Detail

What Goes Into Your Gazette File

The signed Gazette application form in the prescribed proforma
The original notarised affidavit
Original cuttings of both newspaper advertisements
A request letter addressed to the publishing authority
Identity proof, two photographs and the soft copy of the notice
The fee receipt, paid in the applicant's own name
Government fee and time: Rs 1,100 for an adult and Rs 1,700 for a minor for the Central Gazette. Publication usually takes 4 to 6 weeks after a complete file reaches the department, and the e-Gazette copy carries the same legal weight as the printed one.
For Family Papers

Three Name Changes Crossed One Family's Documents

This city sat at the centre of three separate changes within living memory. Baroda State, ruled by the Gaekwads from the seventeen thirties, merged into Bombay State in 1949, and Baroda College became a university on 30 April that same year, at the moment of that merger. In 1960 Bombay State was divided and this city became part of the new state of Gujarat. Then in 1974 the city itself was officially renamed from Baroda to Vadodara.

So a grandfather's service record can name Baroda State, a father's certificate can name Bombay State or Baroda city, and a child's Aadhaar names Vadodara, Gujarat. Three papers, one family, one house, and not a single error among them. What a verifier needs is an affidavit that lists each document, the authority and the year, and states plainly that all of them refer to the same place and the same line of people. A standard draft that ignores these layers is the usual reason a Vadodara file comes back.

Send the oldest paper in the house: a Baroda State era record, an old school certificate or a land paper. Records here often go further back than elsewhere, because compulsory free primary education was introduced in Baroda State in 1907, well ahead of most of India.
Compare the Two Routes

Gujarat Gazette or Central Gazette for Vadodara?

Both are valid. Here is the honest difference, so you pick the right one the first time.

Our honest advice for Vadodara: for a state department record the Gujarat route is fine, though the press at Gandhinagar is about 110 kilometres away. This is a university city, and where a degree, a job verification or an overseas admission is involved, the Central Gazette settles it once. The state level detail is on our Gujarat name change guide, and the full comparison is in our name change agent in India guide.
Even Older Layers

Before Baroda, This Place Had Four Other Names

The city was known as Chandanavati after Raja Chandan of the Dod Parmar Rajputs. It was also called Virakshetra, or Viravati, the land of the brave. Later it appears as Vadpatraka, and Vadodara is understood to come from the Sanskrit vatodara, meaning in the belly of the banyan tree, after the trees that lined the Vishwamitri. English travellers and merchants wrote the town as Baroda, and that is the form that stuck for centuries.

You will rarely meet these names on a modern document, but they do turn up on temple records, trust deeds and very old land papers, and they are the reason so many spellings of this one city exist. When an unfamiliar place name appears on a family paper, we treat it as evidence rather than a defect. The affidavit names the document, dates it, says who issued it, and ties it to your present address so the chain holds from the oldest record to the newest.

A note on the district too: Chhota Udaipur was carved out of Vadodara district in 2013, so if your native village lies in that belt, an older paper may name Vadodara district while your Aadhaar names Chhota Udaipur. Both are correct for their time and the affidavit should record it.
Save Your Money

Not Every Case in Vadodara Needs a Gazette

Many agents sell a Gazette for every case. That is not honest. A degree that says Baroda while your Aadhaar says Vadodara is not a name change at all, and no Gazette will alter what the university printed. That situation needs a properly worded affidavit, and where a board or employer insists, a letter or verification from the university itself. Paying for a Gazette to fix it is paying for the wrong thing.

A name error in a birth certificate is corrected by the Registrar through the Vadodara Municipal Corporation, or the nagarpalika or gram panchayat outside corporation limits. Caste, income and residence certificates go to the issuing authority at the taluka or Mamlatdar office, and land records through the revenue side and the talati. A Gazette is for a full legal name change, after marriage, after divorce, for numerology or by personal choice, and for cases where the same difference repeats across several records.

People Also Ask

Name Change in Vadodara, Frequently Asked Questions

Clear answers to the questions we hear most often.

How do I change my name legally in Vadodara?
In three steps. A notarised affidavit on stamp paper, a public notice in one English and one Gujarati newspaper, and a Gazette notification. We handle all three for you, fully online.
My degree says Baroda but my Aadhaar says Vadodara, is that a problem?
No. The city was renamed Vadodara in 1974 but the university is still officially The Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda, so even a new degree carries Baroda. It does not need correcting, but the affidavit must explain it.
Will a Gazette change the word Baroda on my degree?
No, and anyone selling you one for that is charging for the wrong thing. No Gazette alters what a university printed. A properly worded affidavit, and where needed a verification letter from the university, is what settles it.
Should I write Baroda or Vadodara on the form?
Use exactly what appears on your identity proof, which will be Vadodara, and copy the institution name from your certificate as printed, including the word Baroda. The affidavit records both.
My grandfather's papers name Baroda State, are they still usable?
Yes. Baroda State merged into Bombay State in 1949, and this city became part of Gujarat in 1960. Those records are valid and the affidavit names each document, its authority and its year.
My old paper says Vadodara district but my Aadhaar says Chhota Udaipur, why?
Chhota Udaipur was carved out of Vadodara district in 2013. Both district names are correct for their own period, and the affidavit should state that the village is the same.
My initials are written differently on different documents, what do I do?
Decide the final form once, including spacing and surname spelling, and keep it identical on the affidavit, the newspaper notice and the Gazette application. Different initials is a common reason a file is returned.
How do I correct a name in a Vadodara birth certificate?
That is a Registrar correction through the Vadodara Municipal Corporation, or through the nagarpalika or gram panchayat if the birth was registered outside corporation limits. It is not a Gazette matter.
How much does a name change cost in Vadodara?
The Central Gazette Government fee is Rs 1,100 for an adult and Rs 1,700 for a minor. The Gujarat Gazette fee is separate and non-refundable, and newspaper and affidavit charges are extra. Our complete service starts at Rs 3,999.
Will the Gazette update my Aadhaar and PAN automatically?
No. The Gazette is the proof of the change. You then apply to each authority separately, and each has its own process. We guide you through Aadhaar, PAN, passport, bank and college records after publication.
