Name Change Agent in Vadodara

Baroda was officially renamed Vadodara in 1974. The university did not follow. To this day it is The Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda, it teaches more than forty seven thousand students, and its website is still msubaroda.ac.in. So a degree or a marksheet issued this year carries the word Baroda, while the Aadhaar of the person holding it says Vadodara. That is not an old records problem from decades ago. It is happening on fresh certificates right now.

Most people only discover it at the worst moment, during a job verification, a passport application or an overseas admission, when someone compares the two documents and asks which city the applicant is from. Nothing is wrong with either paper. The university carries its founder's name and his state's name, and it is entitled to. What is needed is an affidavit that names the university exactly as printed, records that the city was renamed in 1974, and declares that Baroda and Vadodara are the same place and the holder is one person.

This city sat at the centre of three separate changes within living memory. Baroda State, ruled by the Gaekwads from the seventeen thirties, merged into Bombay State in 1949, and Baroda College became a university on 30 April that same year, at the moment of that merger. In 1960 Bombay State was divided and this city became part of the new state of Gujarat. Then in 1974 the city itself was officially renamed from Baroda to Vadodara.

So a grandfather's service record can name Baroda State, a father's certificate can name Bombay State or Baroda city, and a child's Aadhaar names Vadodara, Gujarat. Three papers, one family, one house, and not a single error among them. What a verifier needs is an affidavit that lists each document, the authority and the year, and states plainly that all of them refer to the same place and the same line of people. A standard draft that ignores these layers is the usual reason a Vadodara file comes back.

The city was known as Chandanavati after Raja Chandan of the Dod Parmar Rajputs. It was also called Virakshetra, or Viravati, the land of the brave. Later it appears as Vadpatraka, and Vadodara is understood to come from the Sanskrit vatodara, meaning in the belly of the banyan tree, after the trees that lined the Vishwamitri. English travellers and merchants wrote the town as Baroda, and that is the form that stuck for centuries.

You will rarely meet these names on a modern document, but they do turn up on temple records, trust deeds and very old land papers, and they are the reason so many spellings of this one city exist. When an unfamiliar place name appears on a family paper, we treat it as evidence rather than a defect. The affidavit names the document, dates it, says who issued it, and ties it to your present address so the chain holds from the oldest record to the newest.
