A stone at the Nageshwara temple in Begur, inside this city, carries an inscription in Halegannada, old Kannada, from around 890 CE. It is a hero stone, a veeragallu, and it records a battle at a place called Bengaluru. That is the earliest known written appearance of the name, and it is roughly six hundred years older than Kempe Gowda, who built his mud fort here in 1537. Bangalore is the anglicised form of that same Kannada word.
So when the city officially became Bengaluru on 1 November 2014, nothing was invented. A name that had been written down for about eleven centuries was restored in the records that had drifted away from it. The same page tells you that to change a name in a birth certificate at the BBMP office you should submit your Gazette notification. Both of those will cost you money you did not have to spend. A name error in a birth certificate is corrected by the Registrar of Births and Deaths at the local body that registered the birth, under section 15 of the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969. No Gazette is involved.
The honest test is simple. If one document has a spelling that differs from the rest and that document was issued by an authority you can go back to, ask that authority to correct it. If the same difference repeats across your SSLC marks card, your Aadhaar, your PAN and your bank, or if you are actually taking a different name after marriage, after divorce, for numerology or by choice, then a Gazette is the cheaper answer because one published proof settles all of them at once. Your Two Spellings Are in Very Old Company
Here is the part we enjoy telling people. That ninth century Begur inscription, the oldest written form of this city's name, is itself transcribed differently by different published accounts. Most give the phrase as Bengaluru Kalaga, the battle of Bengaluru. Wikipedia's history of the city gives Bengaluru Kadana, and adds that the name appears there in the form Benguluru. Another reading of the same stone gives Benga-val-ooru, the city of guards. One inscription, and the scholars reading it produce several spellings between them.
If a single carved stone that historians have studied for a century can be written down four ways, a difference between your school certificate and your Aadhaar is not a failure of care in your family. It is what happens when a name in one language and script is written into another, repeatedly, by different hands over decades. What it needs is not an apology.
