Quick Answer

To change your name legally in Gandhinagar, you follow three steps. A notarised affidavit on stamp paper, a public notice in two newspapers, one English and one Gujarati, and then a Gazette notification. The Gujarat Gazette is printed here in Sector 29, but that closeness is not by itself a reason to choose the state route.

The Honest Answer First

The State Press Is in This City, And That Is Not the Deciding Factor

The Gujarat Gazette is printed by the Directorate of Government Printing and Stationery at the Government Printing Press in Sector 29, near Police Bhavan. Every other city in this state is a long drive from that building. Here it is a few minutes away, and the state also runs an e-Gazette portal with its own Change of Name application, so the state route looks like the obvious choice for a Gandhinagar resident.

We will tell you plainly that convenience is the wrong reason to pick it. A state Gazette is used mainly inside its own state. Gandhinagar is full of people whose records have to hold up somewhere else, central Government and PSU staff, officers posted out of state, and the finance and IT workforce at GIFT City and Infocity whose documents get attested for use abroad. For all of them the Central Gazette is the one that settles the question once. We read your papers first and tell you which route your case actually needs, even when the nearer option would be easier for us to arrange.

Ask yourself one question: will this name ever need to be proved outside Gujarat, at a passport office, an embassy, a central department or a bank head office in another state? If the answer is yes, take the Central Gazette once and be finished with it.
Central Gazette

The Central Gazette Process for a Name Change in Gandhinagar

This is the route accepted everywhere in India and abroad. Here is exactly what happens at each step.

Prepare and Notarise the Affidavit

A sworn declaration on non-judicial stamp paper, signed with two witnesses and attested by a Notary Public or First Class Magistrate in Gandhinagar.

Publish in English and Gujarati Newspapers

One English daily and one Gujarati daily, carrying the same old name, new name, address and affidavit date.

File With the Department of Publication

The complete file goes to the Controller of Publications, Civil Lines, Delhi, and your notice appears in Part IV of the Gazette of India.

Step 1 in Detail

What Your Name Change Affidavit Must Contain

Your old name exactly as printed on your existing documents
Your new name, spelt exactly as you want it recorded forever
Your plot or house number, sector, road and city exactly as on your proof
Any older paper naming Mehsana district, Ahmedabad district or Pethapur
A declaration that both names belong to the same person
Your signature, two witness signatures, and the notary stamp with date
Decide the initials once, not later: initials are the biggest cause of rejection in Gujarat. Choose between A. B. Patel, A B Patel or the full expanded form, fix the spacing and the surname spelling, and keep it identical on all three documents.
Step 2 in Detail

The English and Gujarati Newspaper Rules

Two papers are needed, one English and one Gujarati, not just one
The notice must repeat the same old name, new name and address as the affidavit
It must mention the date on which the affidavit was made
The advertisement usually appears in the classified section
Keep the original dated cuttings showing the paper name
Even one letter spelt differently can get your whole file returned
Cost of this step: two budget dailies cost about Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,500 together, while premium national papers can cost Rs 2,500 to Rs 5,000. Ahmedabad editions circulate here the same morning, so notices go in quickly.
Step 3 in Detail

What Goes Into Your Gazette File

The signed Gazette application form in the prescribed proforma
The original notarised affidavit
Original cuttings of both newspaper advertisements
A request letter addressed to the publishing authority
Identity proof, two photographs and the soft copy of the notice
The fee receipt, paid in the applicant's own name
Government fee and time: Rs 1,100 for an adult and Rs 1,700 for a minor for the Central Gazette. Publication usually takes 4 to 6 weeks after a complete file reaches the department, and the e-Gazette copy carries the same legal weight as the printed one.
The Address Problem Unique to This City

Here Your Address Is a Number and a Gujarati Letter

Gandhinagar was laid out as thirty sectors, each about nine hundred metres square, by the planners H. K. Mewada and Prakash M. Apte between 1964 and 1970. The streets running one way are numbered, and the cross streets are named for letters of the Gujarati alphabet, k, kh, g, gh, ch, chh and j, with the numbered roads running one to seven the other way. So a full address here reads something like Plot 123 stroke 2, Sector 21, Gh road 4.

That is elegant on a map and difficult on paper. The same letter gets written as Gh on one document, Gha on another and in Gujarati script on a third. The sector appears as Sector 21, Sector-21, Sec. 21 and Sector No. 21 across four different records, and a plot number carries a stroke or a bracket that gets dropped. None of it is an error and none of it needs correcting on the original. But a name change file is checked on the name and the address together, so we settle one exact format before drafting, copy your identity proof character for character, and record the other versions in the affidavit.

Send two things before we draft: your Aadhaar and any older document with your address on it. Tell us how the sector, the road letter and the plot number are written on each. This is the single check that saves the most time on a Gandhinagar file.

Our honest advice for Gandhinagar: if you are state Government staff and the change is for your service book and state records, the state route is the right one and it is on your doorstep. If you are central Government, PSU, defence, GIFT City or likely to work outside Gujarat, take the Central Gazette. The state level detail is on our Gujarat name change guide, and the full comparison is in our name change agent in India guide.
For Papers Older Than the City

Before 1964 Your Village Was in Mehsana or Ahmedabad District

Gandhinagar district was created on 31 May 1964 by putting together villages from Kalol taluka, which was in Mehsana district, and parts of the Dehgam, Daskroi and Ahmedabad City talukas of Ahmedabad district. The city itself came later, the foundation stone laid in August 1965, and Gandhinagar replaced Ahmedabad as the state capital in 1970. Some of this land was once part of Pethapur state.

So the older the paper, the less likely it says Gandhinagar at all. A grandfather's land record can name Pethapur, a father's school certificate can name Mehsana or Ahmedabad district, and a child's Aadhaar says Gandhinagar. Government service records from the nineteen sixties often name Ahmedabad, because that was where the capital sat until 1970. Not one of those is wrong. The affidavit has to name each document, its authority and its year, and state that the village is the same and the district was reorganised in 1964.

Send the oldest paper in the house: photograph it as it is. If it names a district or a state that no longer covers your village, that is exactly the document we need to build the chain properly.
Save Your Money

Not Every Case in Gandhinagar Needs a Gazette

Many agents sell a Gazette for every case. That is not honest, and it is worth saying in the city where the press actually is. A sector written two ways, a road letter transliterated differently, or an old paper naming Mehsana district is not a name change problem. Those need a properly worded affidavit, not a notification, and no Gazette will alter what an earlier authority wrote.

A name error in a birth certificate is corrected by the Registrar through the Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation, or the nagarpalika or gram panchayat outside corporation limits. Caste, income and residence certificates are corrected by the issuing authority at the taluka or Mamlatdar office, and land record entries through the revenue side and the talati. A Gazette is for a full legal name change, after marriage, after divorce, for numerology or by personal choice, and for cases where the same difference repeats across several records.

Your Complete Name Change Journey in Gandhinagar, Handled by NameChangeAgent

Most people think the Gazette is the finish line. It is the middle. Here is the whole journey, and where we stand beside you at each stage.

NameChangeAgent is a platform built for exactly this one job, done properly, in your own city. We are based in Delhi and we work with families across Gandhinagar entirely online. You send photographs of what you have on WhatsApp. We read them, tell you honestly which route your case needs, and then carry it through. Yes, the state press is minutes from your sector, and no, that is not how we decide your route.

What makes a Gandhinagar file different is what you have already read on this page. A sector and road letter written four different ways, an old paper naming Mehsana or Ahmedabad district, a service book that has to hold if you are posted out of state, a GIFT City document that will be attested abroad. A generic online form asks about none of that. We ask before a single word is drafted, because a file worded correctly the first time does not come back.

Free Consultation on Your Gandhinagar Case

English and Gujarati Notices Placed

We place both advertisements with wording identical to the affidavit, and collect the original dated cuttings for your file.

Gazette Filed and Followed Up

State route or central route, the complete file goes to the right authority and we track it through to publication rather than leaving you to chase it.

Gazette Copy Delivered to You

You receive the published notification, which is your permanent legal proof, with a clean document set for the updates ahead.

Every Document Updated Afterwards

Aadhaar, PAN, passport, service book, bank, provident fund, school and college records. Most agents stop before this stage, and this is the stage that actually matters.

One person, one number, all the way through: the same team member who reads your first WhatsApp message stays with your file until the last document is updated, in Gujarati, Hindi or English. Call 9540005002 or message 9540005064 to start.

People Also Ask

Name Change in Gandhinagar, Frequently Asked Questions

Clear answers to the questions we hear most often.

How do I change my name legally in Gandhinagar?
In three steps. A notarised affidavit on stamp paper, a public notice in one English and one Gujarati newspaper, and a Gazette notification. We handle all three for you, fully online.
The state press is in Gandhinagar, so should I just take the Gujarat Gazette?
Not automatically. Convenience is the wrong reason. If you are state Government staff and the change is for state records, the state route fits. For central Government, PSU, defence, GIFT City or work outside Gujarat, take the Central Gazette.
Where is the Gujarat Gazette printed?
At the Government Printing Press of the Directorate of Government Printing and Stationery in Sector 29, Gandhinagar, near Police Bhavan. The state also runs an e-Gazette portal with its own Change of Name application.
My sector is written differently on different documents, is that a problem?
It can be, because the address is checked along with the name. Sector 21, Sector-21, Sec. 21 and Sector No. 21 all appear in practice. Use the form on your identity proof and let the affidavit record the others.
My road letter is written Gh on one paper and Gha on another, what do I do?
That is normal here. The cross streets are named for Gujarati alphabet letters, k, kh, g, gh, ch, chh and j, and they get transliterated differently. We settle one form and record the rest.
My old certificate names Mehsana or Ahmedabad district, is it still valid?
Yes. Gandhinagar district was created on 31 May 1964 from Kalol taluka of Mehsana district and parts of Dehgam, Daskroi and Ahmedabad City talukas. Both district names are correct for their own period.
My old land paper names Pethapur, what is that?
Pethapur was a princely state, and some of the land the capital was built on was once part of it. The record refers to a real place and the affidavit should say so.
How do I correct a name in a Gandhinagar birth certificate?
That is a Registrar correction through the Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation, or through the nagarpalika or gram panchayat if the birth was registered outside corporation limits. It is not a Gazette matter.
How much does a name change cost in Gandhinagar?
The Central Gazette Government fee is Rs 1,100 for an adult and Rs 1,700 for a minor. The Gujarat Gazette fee is separate and non-refundable, and newspaper and affidavit charges are extra. Our complete service starts at Rs 3,999.
Will the Gazette update my Aadhaar and service book automatically?
No. The Gazette is the proof of the change. You then apply to each authority separately, and each has its own process. We guide you through Aadhaar, PAN, passport, service book, bank and college records after publication.
