Bardez is one of the three Old Conquests, along with Tiswadi and Salcete, taken by the Portuguese between 1510 and 1543. The rest of Goa, from Pernem and Bicholim to Quepem and Canacona, came only in the eighteenth century. That gap of two hundred years shows up in the paperwork. These are the old village land bodies of Goa and they have kept their own registers for centuries. A name recorded there may be the earliest official version a family has, and it will usually be in the older spelling.

This is worth saying plainly. A Gazette notification does not correct a land or Comunidade entry. Those go through the registration and revenue side, on their own applications. What a Gazette does is settle your identity once, so that when you do approach those offices, there is a single published record proving that the old name and the new name are the same person. That is the sensible order, and it saves people from paying twice.

The city is Mapusa today. In Portuguese India it was written Mapuca with a cedilla, and in Konkani it is Mhapxem. The taluka is Bardez, also written Bardes. None of these is a mistake, and over a lifetime a person can collect documents carrying more than one of them, especially where an older certificate sits alongside a recent Aadhaar.

A name change file is checked on the name and the address together, so this matters.
