This city has carried more names than any other in Gujarat, and the district administration lists them itself. Bhrigukachchha, Bhrigupur and Shrinagar in the Puranic period. Barygaza, meaning deep treasure, to the Greeks and then the Romans who traded at this port. Bharukachchha between the eighth and tenth centuries. Bharuch under Muslim rule, Bhadoch under the Marathas, and Broach under the British.

That is unusually useful, because each spelling belongs to a particular administration and period. A land record or school certificate marked Broach is a British era paper. One saying Bhadoch is older still. You do not have to guess the vintage of a document here, the name on it tells you. What the affidavit must then do is name the document, record the spelling exactly as written, state which period and authority it belongs to, and declare that Broach, Bhadoch and Bharuch are one and the same place.

Bharuch is described by its own district administration as the second oldest continuously inhabited city in India, after Kashi. It was a shipbuilding centre and port on the pre-compass trade routes west, and Roman merchants traded here. That history is real and it is something to be proud of.

It is also not what decides your file. Anything issued before 1997 names Bharuch, while a recent Aadhaar for the same village names Narmada.

Both are correct for their own period and neither needs correcting. It is worth noticing that this district has now produced two kinds of change in the same records, a spelling that shifted with each administration and a district boundary that moved in living memory. A verifier comparing an old certificate with a new Aadhaar can see two differences at once and read them as a mismatch. The affidavit has to set out each document with its year, its spelling and its district as written, then state that the person and the village are the same throughout.
