To change your name legally in Bharuch, you follow three steps. A notarised affidavit on stamp paper, a public notice in two newspapers, one English and one Gujarati, and then a Gazette notification. If your family paper says Broach or Bhadoch instead of Bharuch, that spelling tells you which administration issued it, and the affidavit has to record it.
Broach, Bhadoch or Bharuch Tells You Who Issued the Paper
This city has carried more names than any other in Gujarat, and the district administration lists them itself. Bhrigukachchha, Bhrigupur and Shrinagar in the Puranic period. Barygaza, meaning deep treasure, to the Greeks and then the Romans who traded at this port. Bharukachchha between the eighth and tenth centuries. Bharuch under Muslim rule, Bhadoch under the Marathas, and Broach under the British.
That is unusually useful, because each spelling belongs to a particular administration and period. A land record or school certificate marked Broach is a British era paper. One saying Bhadoch is older still. You do not have to guess the vintage of a document here, the name on it tells you. What the affidavit must then do is name the document, record the spelling exactly as written, state which period and authority it belongs to, and declare that Broach, Bhadoch and Bharuch are one and the same place.

This is the route accepted everywhere in India and abroad. Here is exactly what happens at each step.

What Goes Into Your Gazette File
Eight Thousand Years of History Is Not Eight Thousand Years of Paper
Bharuch is described by its own district administration as the second oldest continuously inhabited city in India, after Kashi. It was a shipbuilding centre and port on the pre-compass trade routes west, and Roman merchants traded here. That history is real and it is something to be proud of.
It is also not what decides your file. A name change is built from documents, and usable documents here begin roughly with the British administrative records of the nineteenth century, not with antiquity. We say this plainly because families sometimes arrive expecting a temple genealogy or a caste register going back centuries to settle a modern identity question, and it will not. What settles it is a school certificate, a land entry, a municipal record or an employer paper, each named in the affidavit with its authority and year. If the oldest usable paper in your house is from 1940, that is the start of your chain, and it is enough.

Narmada District Was Carved Out of Bharuch in 1997
In 1997 Gujarat created Narmada district out of the eastern part of Bharuch district, with its headquarters at Rajpipla, which had itself been a princely state before independence. Families from the Nandod, Dediapada and Sagbara belt therefore hold papers under two district names. Anything issued before 1997 names Bharuch, while a recent Aadhaar for the same village names Narmada.
Both are correct for their own period and neither needs correcting. It is worth noticing that this district has now produced two kinds of change in the same records, a spelling that shifted with each administration and a district boundary that moved in living memory. A verifier comparing an old certificate with a new Aadhaar can see two differences at once and read them as a mismatch. The affidavit has to set out each document with its year, its spelling and its district as written, then state that the person and the village are the same throughout.
Not Every Case in Bharuch Needs a Gazette
Many agents sell a Gazette for every case. That is not honest. A paper spelling the place Broach, or a village that moved to Narmada district in 1997, is not a name change problem at all, and no Gazette will alter what an earlier authority wrote. Those need a properly worded affidavit, not a notification, and anyone charging you for a Gazette to fix them is charging for the wrong thing.
A name error in a birth certificate is corrected by the Registrar through the Bharuch Municipality, or the nagarpalika or gram panchayat where the birth was registered. Caste, income and residence certificates are corrected by the issuing authority at the taluka or Mamlatdar office, and land record entries through the revenue side and the talati. A Gazette is for a full legal name change, after marriage, after divorce, for numerology or by personal choice, and for cases where the same difference repeats across several records.

Your Complete Name Change Journey in Bharuch, Handled by NameChangeAgent
Most people think the Gazette is the finish line. It is the middle. Here is the whole journey, and where we stand beside you at each stage.
NameChangeAgent is a platform built for exactly this one job, done properly, in your own city. We are based in Delhi and we work with families across Bharuch entirely online, which means nobody has to take a day off, drive two hundred and thirty kilometres to the state press at Gandhinagar, or queue at a counter only to find out they brought the wrong paper. You send photographs of what you have on WhatsApp. We read them, tell you honestly which route your case needs, and then carry it through.
What makes a Bharuch file different is what you have already read on this page. A certificate spelling the place Broach, a village that moved to Narmada district in 1997, an Ankleshwar employer record that has to satisfy an office in another state, and a family history so old that people expect it to help when only the last century of paper actually does. A generic online form asks about none of that. We ask before a single word is drafted, because a file worded correctly the first time does not come back.
