To change your name legally in Faridabad, you follow three steps. A notarised affidavit on stamp paper, a public notice in one Hindi and one English newspaper, and a Gazette notification. If your family's oldest paper is a resettlement record from 1949 or later, that is a valid starting point and the affidavit begins there.
This City Was Built for People Who Arrived With Nothing
The district administration sets out its own origin plainly. After 1947 the Government of India selected this site to rehabilitate people displaced from the North-West Frontier Province and Dera Ghazi Khan district, both now in Pakistan. Around thirty thousand people were living in tented camps along the Delhi Mathura road. The Faridabad Development Board was formed on 10 June 1949 under the chairmanship of President Rajendra Prasad, with Nehru as an invited member, and it worked under the Government of India through the Ministry of Rehabilitation. The foundation stone of the New Industrial Township was laid on 17 October 1949.
For a great many families here that history is not background, it is where their paper trail starts. Records from before 1947 relate to places that are now in another country, and no office in India can obtain them. What exists instead is what was created here from 1949 onwards, an allotment paper, a rehabilitation record, a ration card, a first school admission. And names were written down at that point by clerks recording what they heard from people who had lost their documents along with everything else. So for many households the earliest spelling of the family name is the resettlement record itself. That is not a weak chain. It is simply where the chain honestly begins, and an affidavit that says so plainly is stronger than one that pretends something older exists.

What Goes Into Your Gazette File
This Belt Was Gurgaon District, and Palwal Left in 2008
Faridabad did not begin as a district of its own. This area sat within Gurgaon district for a long stretch after Haryana was formed in 1966, and became a separate district later. Then in 2008 Palwal district was carved out of Faridabad, taking the southern tehsils with it. So depending on the year and the village, a family here can hold papers naming Gurgaon district, Faridabad district or Palwal district, all for the same piece of ground.
Every one of those is correct for the period it was issued and none needs correcting. The affidavit has to record the district exactly as printed on each document with its year, then state that the place and the person are unchanged. If any paper of yours says Gurgaon, our Gurugram page explains the further wrinkle that Gurgaon itself was renamed Gurugram by three separate notifications in 2016, which is worth knowing before an officer reads your file and sees two apparently different districts.
Haryana Gazette or Central Gazette for Faridabad?
Both are valid. Here is the honest difference, so you pick the right one the first time.
| Point | Haryana Gazette | Central Gazette of India |

| Published by | Printing and Stationery Department, Haryana, at Sector 18, Chandigarh | Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi |
| Distance from Faridabad | About 270 kilometres to Chandigarh | About 30 kilometres, and filed by post anyway |
| Where it is accepted | Mainly within Haryana | Every state and Union Territory |
| Working in Delhi or Noida | Questioned across the border | Accepted without argument |
| Industrial employer and provident fund records | Meant for state department records | The route EPFO and central offices work with |
| Very old resettlement era papers in the chain | Fine for a state department record | One published proof every office will accept |
| Passport and going abroad | Usually not accepted for visa and attestation | The proof passport offices and embassies look for |
| Government fee | As set by the state, non-refundable | Rs 1,100 adult, Rs 1,700 minor |
NIT Is Not a Typing Error, and Ballabgarh Was Its Own Place
Addresses here still carry NIT, as in NIT 1, NIT 3 or NIT 5. It stands for New Industrial Township, the name given to the settlement founded in 1949, and it has simply stayed in use for seventy five years alongside the numbered sectors that came later. Verification staff outside Haryana sometimes read NIT as an abbreviation someone invented, or as a college name, and query it. It is a real, official address element.
Ballabgarh is the other name worth knowing. It was a separate town under its own ruler, and the district's own history records that the Faridabad pargana was held by the Ballabgarh ruler until it was confiscated by the government after the revolt of 1857. Ballabgarh is now part of the Faridabad municipal area, but older records, land papers and family documents may name it on its own. The city itself takes its name from Sheikh Farid, treasurer to the emperor Jahangir, who built a fort, a tank and a mosque here in the early seventeenth century. Old papers naming any of these are genuine, and the affidavit records each as printed with its year.
Not Every Case in Faridabad Needs a Gazette
Many agents sell a Gazette for every case. That is not honest. A paper naming Gurgaon district, a village now in Palwal, an address written NIT, or a spelling first recorded in a resettlement register is not a name change problem at all. Those need a properly worded affidavit, not a notification, and no Gazette will alter what an earlier authority wrote. And nobody can produce a document from a place that is now in another country, so no agent should charge you to try.
A name error in a birth certificate is corrected by the Registrar through the Municipal Corporation of Faridabad, or the nagar parishad or gram panchayat where the birth was registered. Caste, income, residence and domicile certificates are corrected by the issuing authority at the tehsil or SDM office, and land record entries through the revenue side and the patwari. A Gazette is for a full legal name change, after marriage, after divorce, for numerology or by personal choice, and for cases where the same difference repeats across several records.

Your Complete Name Change Journey in Faridabad, Handled by NameChangeAgent
Most people think the Gazette is the finish line. It is the middle. Here is the whole journey, and where we stand beside you at each stage.
NameChangeAgent is a platform built for exactly this one job, done properly, in your own city. You send photographs of what you have on WhatsApp. We read them, tell you honestly which route your case needs, and then carry it through. Nobody has to take a day off work or drive to Chandigarh.
What makes a Faridabad file different is what you have already read on this page. A family whose paper trail starts at a resettlement record because everything older is in another country. A district that was Gurgaon, then Faridabad, then Palwal for some villages. An address line that says NIT and gets queried by verifiers who do not know what it means. A spelling first written down by a clerk in 1949 listening to someone who had lost their papers. A generic online form asks about none of that. We ask before a single word is drafted, because a file worded correctly the first time does not come back.
