Name Change Agent in Jind

From 15 July 1948 until 1 November 1966, the area that is now Jind district was not a district at all. It was part of Sangrur district, which at that time had five tehsils, Barnala, Malerkotla, Sangrur, Narwana and Jind. That is eighteen years of birth records, school certificates, land entries and service papers issued under the name of Sangrur. And Sangrur today is a district of Punjab.

So a person born or schooled here before November 1966 holds a document naming a Punjab district, and a verifier who reads Sangrur will reasonably assume Punjab. Here is the part that resolves it, and it comes from the district administration's own history. In the reorganisation of Punjab in 1966 the Sangrur district was bifurcated, and the Jind and Narwana tehsils were allocated to Haryana and constituted into Jind district. The tehsils moved and their records moved with them. So the paper names Sangrur but the office holding your record today is a Haryana office. Neither fact is wrong and neither can be corrected. It has to be stated, with the year, in the affidavit.

When the princely states acceded in 1948, the reorganisation here was done tehsil by tehsil, and it did not draw from one royal house. The Jind tehsil came from Jind State, while the Narwana tehsil came mostly from Patiala State. The two were then formed into tehsils of Sangrur district within the Patiala and East Punjab States Union. So within this single district today, a Jind side family's princely era papers name Jind State, and a Narwana side family's name Patiala State. People are often surprised by that, and assume one of the two must be an error.

There is a further turn worth knowing, because it explains why Jind State records are not necessarily in Jind. Raja Gajpat Singh seized this tract from the Afghan governor Zain Khan in 1763, received the title of Raja from Emperor Shah Alam in 1772 and built his brick fort at Jind. But later, Raja Sangat Singh, who reigned from 1822 to 1834, chose Sangrur as the capital of Jind State. So the state that carried the name Jind was administered from a town that is today in Punjab, and when PEPSU was folded into Punjab in 1956 the old capital stayed on that side of the line. A paper from that era can name Jind State, Patiala State or Sangrur, and all three are genuine.

Jind district came into existence on 1 November 1966, the same day Haryana itself was created, as one of the seven original districts of the new state. That makes it different from most districts in Haryana, which were carved out of an older Haryana district years later. Jind has no Haryana parent. Its parent is Punjab, and specifically the Sangrur district of Punjab. So when someone here is asked which district their old papers belong to, the honest answer is a district in another state, not an earlier Haryana one.

The boundary kept moving afterwards, village by village. The Jind tehsil was split into Jind and Safidon in 1967. In January 1973, fifty four villages from the Kaithal tehsil were adjusted into this district, forty three going to Jind tehsil, five to Safidon and six to Narwana. In 1974 the village of Barsola came across from the Hansi tehsil, which sits in Hisar district and is covered on our Hisar page. Then in 1979, when Kaithal was made a district, Kalayat and Rajound went from Jind to Kaithal. If your village is in any of those movements, the district on your paper depends on the year it was issued.
