Quick Answer

To change your name legally in Mysuru, you follow three steps. A notarised affidavit sworn here, a public notice in one daily local leading newspaper, and a Central Gazette notification with the fee paid on Bharatkosh. A birth certificate spelling error is different and is corrected by the Registrar, not by Gazette.

Mahishmati, Purigere, Mahishapura, Mahishuru, Mysore

This City Has Been Recorded Under Nine Different Names

The district administration's own history page traces it, and Britannica adds to it. The site is mentioned in the Mahabharata as Mahishmati. In the Mauryan era it was known as Purigere. It later became Mahishapura. The Kannada form Mahishasurana Ooru, the town of Mahishasura, gave Mahishur and then Mahishuru, which is how inscriptions of the seventeenth century and later refer to it. Bettada Chamaraja Wadiyar rebuilt the fort and called the city Mahishura Nagara. Then mysooru, then the anglicised Mysore, and on 1 November 2014, Mysuru.

Nine names, one place, and every one of them was the correct name at the time somebody wrote it down. We put this at the top because almost everybody who writes to us about two versions of their own name is embarrassed about it. In this city, being recorded under more than one name is not a lapse. It is the entire history of the address you live at.

Even the oldest of those names is written two ways. The Mauryan era name appears as Purigere in Britannica's entry and as Puragere in other published accounts of the village that stood where the Palace now stands. One vowel, two spellings, two thousand three hundred years of distance, and nobody involved was careless. That is exactly the shape of the difference between your matriculation certificate and your Aadhaar.
Central Gazette

The Central Gazette Process for a Name Change in Mysuru

This is the route accepted everywhere in India and abroad. Here is each step.

Prepare and Notarise the Affidavit

A sworn declaration on non-judicial stamp paper, attested by a Notary Public or First Class Magistrate here in Mysuru. It is not made in Bengaluru and not in Delhi.

Publish One Newspaper Notice

One daily local leading newspaper, carrying your father's or husband's name and your full residential address. The original paper goes with the file.

Pay on Bharatkosh and Send the File

Pay through the Non-Tax Receipt Portal, print the receipt, and the complete file goes by post or courier to the Controller of Publications, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054.

Step 1 in Detail

What Your Name Change Affidavit Must Contain

Your old name exactly as printed on your existing documents
Your new name, spelt exactly as you want it recorded forever
Your father's or husband's name, which the guidelines require
Every spelling your name appears in, including any Kannada form
The city as printed, Mysore on older papers and Mysuru on newer
Your signature, two witness signatures, and the notary stamp with date
Decide the form once, not later: settle the spacing, the surname spelling and whether an initial is expanded, then keep it identical in the affidavit, the newspaper and the application. The department returns files where those three disagree. Our name change affidavit page sets out the full wording.
Step 2 in Detail

One Newspaper, and Your Affidavit Is Made Here

One of the daily local leading newspapers, not two papers
No language condition for a simple adult name change
The notice must state your father's or husband's name
It must carry your residential address in full
The original newspaper is forwarded, not a photocopy
The affidavit is sworn before a notary here in Mysuru
We could not find a single page ranking for this city that says one. Every one of them tells you to book two, and the reasons given differ. One English and one regional. One local and one national. Kannada preferred by Deputy Commissioner offices, which do not run the Gazette at all. And on more than one page written for Mysuru, the regional language named is Hindi, which is not the regional language of this city. The Department of Publication's guidelines for change of name for an adult say one of the daily local leading newspapers, with no language condition. Every extra advertisement in that list is money out of your pocket.
Step 3 in Detail

The Fee and How It Is Paid

Rs 1,100 for an adult under the department's published schedule
Rs 3,500 for Indians living abroad
Paid through the Non-Tax Receipt Portal at bharatkosh.gov.in only
The printed receipt is attached to the application
No demand draft, no cash counter, no NEFT or RTGS
Check the current rate before paying, as schedules are revised
The documents must not be older than one year. This is the rule that quietly costs people the most. An affidavit sworn and a notice published, then the file left while life got busy, and a year and a half later both have to be redone and paid for again. If you have papers already prepared, tell us the date on them before anything else.
Mysore Road Is in Bengaluru

Two Traps Between Mysuru and the Wrong Office

The first one costs you a day. A page written specifically for Mysuru gives, as its address, a building on Mysore Road in Bengaluru. Mysore Road is a road in Bengaluru. It is not the city of Mysuru, and the two are about a hundred and forty kilometres apart. If you set out from Kuvempunagar for an address with Mysore in it, you may find yourself in the wrong city entirely. Read any address to the end, and look for the district and the pin code rather than the word you recognise.

The second one is stranger. A widely read answer page states that your name change documents will be verified by the Department of Commerce and Transport secretary, and that you should write a letter to that secretary requesting permission. There is no such step and no such approval in the Central Gazette process. Nobody grants you permission to change your name. You swear an affidavit, you publish a notice, you pay the fee and the department publishes the notification.

The one address that is worth writing down. For the Central Gazette route the file goes to the Controller of Publications, Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054, by post or courier. That is the whole of it. For the Karnataka state route, take the address from the department's own contact page at gokprinting.karnataka.gov.in rather than from any blog, because published sources give at least three different ones.
1956, 1973, 2014

This City's Name Was Once the Name of the Whole State

Mysuru was the seat of the Wadiyars and the capital of the Kingdom of Mysore for close to six centuries, and when the state was formed in 1956 it was formed as Mysore State, taking this city's name for the whole territory. Then on 1 November 1973 the state let that name go and became Karnataka. Forty one years later, on 1 November 2014, the city itself changed from Mysore to Mysuru. One root, two separate changes, four decades apart, and both of them made through published instruments.

We tell people this because it answers the question they are too polite to ask. Is changing a name a strange thing to do. A city here changed its name after eleven centuries of being written down, and the state changed its name after seventeen years and amended the Constitution to do it. Our page on that is at name change agent in Karnataka, and the neighbouring city guide is at name change agent in Bengaluru.

What this means for your papers, in one line. A certificate issued in this city before November 2014 correctly prints Mysore, and one issued after prints Mysuru. Anything from before November 1973 may name Mysore State. All are correct for their year, none of them is an error, and no office should be sending you away over it. We print each one exactly as your document does.
The Gazette Is the Middle, Not the End

The State Renamed Its Own Cities and the Departments Still Had Not Updated

Here is the fact we would put on a poster if we could. Twelve Karnataka cities were officially renamed in 2014. Two years later, in October 2016, the state Cabinet found that the change had still not been implemented in many government departments, because the underlying laws each needed amending. Rather than amend them one by one, the Cabinet decided to enact a separate piece of legislation declaring that the change of names applied to all laws and official documents of the government.

Read that again with your own file in mind. A state government, with every power available to it, renamed its cities through an official process and then discovered two years later that the new names had not travelled into the records that mattered. It needed a further law to push them through. That is the same gap that opens between your Gazette notification and your bank, your provident fund and your university, and it is exactly the gap most agents leave you standing in.

Which is why our work does not stop at publication. After your notification appears we go on to Aadhaar, PAN, passport reissue, bank, provident fund, employer records and your university, in the order that actually works, because most systems read from Aadhaar. An agent who hands you a Gazette PDF and disappears has done the middle third of the job and charged you for all of it.
Check This Before You Pay Anybody

Not Every Case in Mysuru Needs a Gazette

A name error in a birth certificate is corrected by the Registrar of Births and Deaths at the local body that registered the birth, under section 15 of the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969. No Gazette is involved and no newspaper advertisement either. The same is true of caste, income and residence certificates, which are corrected by the authority that issued them. One page ranking for this city lists caste change among the reasons to buy a Gazette notification, which is not what a Gazette does.

A Gazette is for a full legal name change, after marriage, after divorce, for numerology or by personal choice, and for cases where the same difference repeats across several records so that fixing them one at a time costs more than publishing once. If your Mysore certificate and your Mysuru Aadhaar simply print the city differently, that is not a case at all. Our name spelling correction page sets out the difference in full.

Send photographs and ask us the plain question, do I actually need this. A good share of the people who write to us do not, and we say so and they pay us nothing. That is not generosity. An agent who will sell you a Gazette for a birth certificate correction is not going to be careful with the wording that gets published permanently under your name either.
Compare the Two Routes

Karnataka State e-Gazette or Central Gazette in Mysuru?

Both are real, and in this city the answer often depends on where you studied.

PointKarnataka State e-GazetteCentral Gazette of India
Published byDepartment of Printing, Stationery and Publications, BengaluruDepartment of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi
University of Mysore or Karnataka board recordsOften the one those offices ask forAlso accepted
Passport reissue and going abroadUsually not accepted for attestationThe published national record embassies expect
Bank, PAN and provident fundNot what those systems work fromThe central notification they expect
Moving to Bengaluru or another state for workExplained again at each counterAccepted across the whole country
Certificates printing Mysore before 2014Explained office by officeOne published proof settles it everywhere
Papers naming Mysore State before 1973Explained again each timeCovered by the same notification
Where you download the copyThe state e-Gazette portalegazette.gov.in, Weekly Gazette, Part IV
Our honest advice for Mysuru: if your new name is mainly for a University of Mysore record, a Karnataka board certificate or a state service file, say so and the state e-Gazette may be exactly what those offices want. For a passport, a bank, a central employer or anything outside Karnataka, take the Central Gazette, which is the route we run and which is valid for every resident of this city. The state comparison is on our Karnataka page and the national guide is at name change agent in India.

Documents Required for a Name Change in Mysuru

Keep clear copies ready, and check the dates on anything already prepared.

Notarised name change affidavit on stamp paper, which we draft
The original newspaper carrying your notice, not a cutting or copy
Aadhaar, voter ID or passport as identity proof
Mysuru address proof, such as a CESC bill or rental agreement
Any certificate printing Mysore or Mysore State, with the year
Two photographs and the printed Bharatkosh receipt
Two things worth knowing before you send anything: the guidelines state that documents once submitted are not returned to the applicant, in original or photocopy form, so keep your own copies of everything. And the hard copy of the Gazette was discontinued from 1 October 2015, so nobody should be charging you extra for one. You download your notification from egazette.gov.in under the Weekly Gazette, Part IV, and it needs no certification from the department. For central Government staff, the deed follows the format prescribed under the Ministry of Home Affairs memorandum of 12 March 1987.

One Platform, Start to Finish

Your Complete Name Change Journey in Mysuru, Handled by NameChangeAgent

Most people think the Gazette is the finish line. It is the middle. Here is the whole journey.

NameChangeAgent is a platform built for exactly this one job, done properly. We are based in Delhi and we work with people across Mysuru entirely online, from Chamarajapura, Lakshmipuram and Vijayanagar to Kuvempunagar, Hebbal, Bogadi, Vijayanagar, Nanjangud, Hunsur and T Narasipura. You send photographs of what you have on WhatsApp. We read them, tell you honestly which route your case needs, and then carry it through. Your affidavit is sworn here, before a notary in this city.

What makes a Mysuru file different is the layering of names. Your degree may print Mysore, your Aadhaar Mysuru, and an older family paper may name Mysore State. Kannada names reach English databases through transliteration and initials get expanded on one paper and contracted on another. Meanwhile every page ranking for this city tells you to book two newspapers, one of them names Hindi as your regional language, and one sends you to an address in another city entirely. We ask before a single word is drafted.

Free Consultation on Your Mysuru Case

Send your papers on WhatsApp with the years. We tell you whether your difference is a correction or a change, whether the state or Central route fits your records, and whether you need a Gazette at all. No charge and no obligation.

Affidavit Drafted and Notarised in Mysuru

We draft it printing Mysore or Mysuru exactly as each document does, recording every spelling including any Kannada form, and it is sworn before a notary here rather than in Bengaluru or Delhi.

One Newspaper Notice Placed

One daily local leading newspaper, worded identically to the affidavit, carrying your full address, and we keep the original paper for the file. Not two, and no language condition.

File Prepared and Sent by Courier

We pay the fee on Bharatkosh, print the receipt, assemble the complete file and send it by courier to the Controller of Publications in Delhi, then follow it through to publication.

Your Gazette Notification Retrieved

Once published we retrieve your notification from egazette.gov.in, Part IV, and send it to you. Nobody should be charging you extra for a hard copy, which was discontinued in 2015.

Every Document Updated Afterwards

Aadhaar, PAN, passport, bank, provident fund, employer records and University of Mysore records. Most agents stop before this stage, and this is the stage that actually matters.

One person, one number, all the way through: the same team member who reads your first WhatsApp message stays with your file until the last document is updated, in Hindi or English. Call 9540005002 or message 9540005064 to start.

People Also Ask

Name Change in Mysuru, Frequently Asked Questions

Clear answers to the questions we hear most often.

How do I change my name legally in Mysuru?
In three steps. A notarised affidavit sworn here, a public notice in one daily local leading newspaper, and a Central Gazette notification with the fee paid on Bharatkosh. We handle all three for you, fully online.
Do I need two newspapers or one?
One. The Department of Publication's guidelines for change of name for an adult say the change should be advertised in one of the daily local leading newspapers, stating the father's or husband's name with the residential address, and that the original is forwarded. There is no language condition and no requirement for a second paper, whatever the pages ranking for this city tell you.
Is the regional language for a Mysuru notice Hindi?
No. Kannada is the language of this city and Hindi is not its regional language. More than one page written for Mysuru says otherwise, which is a sign that the text was copied from a page written for somewhere else. In any case the adult guidelines set no language condition at all.
Where is the Gazette office for Mysuru?
For the Central Gazette the file goes by post or courier to the Controller of Publications, Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054. Be careful with any address containing the words Mysore Road, because that is a road in Bengaluru about a hundred and forty kilometres away, not the city of Mysuru.
My degree says Mysore and my Aadhaar says Mysuru.
Both are correct. The city officially became Mysuru on 1 November 2014, so anything issued before that correctly prints Mysore, and papers older than November 1973 may name Mysore State. We print each one exactly as your document does rather than standardising them.
Why does this city have so many old names?
The district administration's history and other published accounts trace Mahishmati in the Mahabharata, Purigere in the Mauryan era, Mahishapura, Mahishasurana Ooru, Mahishur and Mahishuru in later inscriptions, Mahishura Nagara under Bettada Chamaraja Wadiyar, then mysooru, Mysore and Mysuru. Being recorded under more than one name is the ordinary history of this place.
Does a birth certificate spelling need a Gazette?
No. It is corrected by the Registrar of Births and Deaths at the local body that registered the birth, under section 15 of the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969. No Gazette and no newspaper advertisement are involved.
Is my name change verified by a Government secretary?
No. A widely read answer page claims your documents are verified by a Department of Commerce and Transport secretary and that you must write asking permission. There is no such step in the Central Gazette process. You swear an affidavit, publish a notice, pay the fee, and the department publishes the notification.
Should I use the Karnataka State e-Gazette or the Central Gazette?
Both are real. For a University of Mysore record, a Karnataka board certificate or a state service file the state e-Gazette may be what those offices want. For a passport, a bank, a central employer or anything outside Karnataka, take the Central Gazette, which is accepted across the whole country.
How much does a name change cost in Mysuru?
The Central Gazette schedule is Rs 1,100 for an adult and Rs 3,500 for Indians living abroad, paid on Bharatkosh, and the receipt comes to you. Rates are revised, so check the current amount before paying. Newspaper and affidavit charges are extra and billed at cost. Our complete service starts at Rs 3,999.
