Read three or four accounts of Belagavi's history and you will be told that Belgaum district was transferred to Mysore State in 1956, which was renamed Karnataka in 1972. The year is wrong. The Legislative Assembly passed its resolution to rename the state on 27 July 1972 and the Legislative Council on 5 August 1972, but the renaming itself took effect under the Mysore State (Alteration of Name) Act, 1973, and the appointed day was 1 November 1973. People are reading the resolution date and reporting it as the change.
One local college's history page also states that Belgaum was part of Bombay State until 1961. The States Reorganisation Act is of 1956, and that is when the transfer happened. Neither error affects your file. Both tell you something about how carefully a page was put together before it told you what to do with your own documents. A City Named for Bamboo, Recorded Eight Ways
The city corporation's own about page records the original name as Venugrama, Sanskrit for village of bamboo, and adds that early Indian texts refer to it as Venupura, city of bamboo. Belgaum is described as the anglicised form of venugram, from Velugrama. Marathi speakers know the city as Belgaon. Belgavi and the ISO form Belagama also appear. Since 1 November 2014 the official name is Belagavi.
The city was founded in the late twelfth century by the Ratta dynasty, who moved here from Saundatti, and pillars inside the fort carry Kannada inscriptions in Nagari script, one of them from 1199 under King Kartaveerya IV. Kannada words in a Nagari script, on a stone, eight hundred years ago. If you are worried about your name appearing in one script on a certificate and another in a database, this city was doing that before your family had surnames.
