Not six names across the centuries. Six names today, in six living languages, all spoken here. In Tulu the city is Kudla, meaning junction, for the confluence of the Netravati and the Phalguni. In Konkani it is Kodial. In Beary it is Maikala, from the wood charcoal once made on the riverbank. In Malayalam it is Mangalapuram. In English it is Mangalore. In Kannada it is Mangaluru, after the goddess Mangaladevi, and that is the official one. Sanskrit, Arabic and Urdu accounts add Manjarun, Manjiloree and Kaudal.

A reported piece on the day of the 2014 renaming put it plainly, that of the six the official name is the least popular, and quoted a local writer saying Mangaluru is an administrative name and that they call the city Kudla. Sit with that for a moment. The name in the government record and the name people actually use are two different words, both correct, neither wrong, and everybody manages.

This one catches people constantly, and one page ranking under the heading of a Karnataka Gazette office address makes the mistake itself. It tells you that gazetted officers, typically Group A or B, are available across districts including Mangaluru, and sends you to the local Tahsildar office or Block Development Office. That is advice about attestation, not about the Gazette. A gazetted officer is a Government official whose appointment was itself announced in a gazette, and who is authorised to attest copies and photographs. The Gazette is a publication.

Your name change is not attested by a gazetted officer. It is sworn before a Notary Public or a First Class Magistrate, advertised in a newspaper, and then published by the Department of Publication in Delhi or by the Karnataka department in Bengaluru. If somebody sends you to a Tahsildar for a Gazette name change, they have confused the two words, and you will spend a morning finding that out.

One page ranking for this city states that without Gazette publication an affidavit and a newspaper advertisement alone are not valid for updating PAN, Aadhaar or passport. That is too strong to be true. A name error in a birth certificate is corrected by the Registrar of Births and Deaths at the body that registered the birth, under section 15 of the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969, with no Gazette at all. Aadhaar name updates have their own document requirements. Whether you need a Gazette depends entirely on which records differ and by how much.

Here is the honest test. If one record differs and it was issued by an authority you can go back to, go back to that authority. If the same difference repeats across your SSLC marks card, your Aadhaar, your PAN, your bank and your passport, a Gazette is cheaper than fixing five things separately.
