Quick Answer

To change your name legally in Chitradurga, you follow three steps. A notarised affidavit sworn here with two witnesses, a public notice in one daily local leading newspaper, and a Central Gazette notification with the fee paid on Bharatkosh. Older papers here may print Chitaldrug or one of several other forms, and every one of them is correct for its date.

Chitaldrug, Chittaldrug, Chittledroog, Chitaldroog

Eight Recorded Forms of This City's Name, and Four of Them Were Official

The encyclopedia entry for the city lists Chitradurg, Chitrakaladurga and Chittaldurg as names it has also been known by, and then states that Chittaldrug, or Chitaldrug, or Chittledroog was the official name used during the period of British rule. Three spellings offered for one official name. The Encyclopaedia Britannica of 1911 filed its article under Chitaldrug. And the encyclopedia's own article on the district, rather than the city, says the British era name was Chitaldroog, which is a fourth version again.

Eight forms in total, and the two articles about the same place disagree with each other. We have now written about seventeen cities in this state and none of them comes close. Shivamogga's government page managed three spellings in one paragraph and we thought that was remarkable. Here the colonial administration could not settle on how to spell the name it had itself imposed.

Which is exactly why we ask for photographs rather than typing. If a family paper from this district prints Chitaldrug and another prints Chitradurga, that is not two mistakes, it is two periods. We name the place exactly as each document names it, with the year, so the affidavit describes the papers you actually hold rather than a tidied version of them.
1866, 1882, 1886, 1997

This District Stopped Being a District, Then Came Back Smaller

Published histories record an unusual sequence. In 1866 Sira taluk was removed from Chitaldrug district and shifted to Tumkur. Then in 1882 the Chitaldrug district itself became a sub-division under Tumkur district. It was not a district any more. In 1886 it was reinstated, but without Pavagada taluk, which stayed with Tumkur. And in the late 1990s Davanagere district was created out of it.

Of the seventeen districts we have written about in this state, this is the only one that stopped existing as a district and then returned. Everywhere else the story is a district being split, renamed or absorbed into a new state. Here it was abolished for four years and reinstated with less land than it had before. Our pages for the two districts on either side of that history are at Tumakuru and Davanagere.

And the shape it held for a century was older still. One account notes that until Davangere district was created in the late 1990s, the boundaries of Chitradurga district reflected its Nayaka heritage, encompassing most of the territory held by Madakari Nayaka when the fort fell to Hyder Ali in 1779. A district outline that carried the shape of an eighteenth century kingdom, until twenty eight years ago. Names and lines both move. Documents record where they were on the day they were printed.
Central Gazette

The Central Gazette Process for a Name Change in Chitradurga

This is the route accepted everywhere in India and abroad. Here is each step.

Prepare and Notarise the Affidavit Here

A sworn declaration on non-judicial stamp paper with two ordinary witnesses, attested by a Notary Public or First Class Magistrate in Chitradurga. Not in Bengaluru and not in Delhi.

Publish One Local Newspaper Notice

One daily local leading newspaper, carrying your father's or husband's name and your full residential address. The original paper goes with the file.

Pay on Bharatkosh and Send the File

Pay through the Non-Tax Receipt Portal, print the receipt, and the complete file goes by post or courier to the Controller of Publications, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054.

Their Own Numbers Make the Case

The Second Newspaper Can Cost More Than the Gazette Itself

We have said on every city page in this state that the Department of Publication's guidelines for change of name for an adult ask for one daily local leading newspaper, and that pages telling you to book two are selling you something. Now one of those pages has published its own cost breakdown, and it makes the argument better than we can. Newspaper advertisements, it says, run from Rs 395 to Rs 3,000 depending on the publication.

Read that again with the Gazette fee beside it. The Central Gazette fee for an adult is Rs 1,100. So on that page's own figures, a single newspaper advertisement at the upper end costs nearly three times the Government fee, and the second advertisement you were told was compulsory could cost more than the entire notification. That is not a rounding error in a quote. It is the largest single number in the whole exercise, and it is for a step the adult guidelines do not ask for.

So ask before you book, not after. One notice, in a daily local leading newspaper, stating your father's or husband's name with your full residential address, with the original forwarded to the department. No language is named in the guidelines. If somebody has already booked you two, ask them which guideline requires the second, and ask to see the rate card for both. Our name change affidavit page sets out the wording that matches the notice.
Step 3 in Detail

The Fee, and Which Portal Is Which

Rs 1,100 for an adult under the department's published schedule
Rs 3,500 for Indians living abroad
Rs 20 stamp duty under the Karnataka Stamp Act, 1957
Central fee paid on bharatkosh.gov.in, the Non-Tax Receipt Portal
NEFT and RTGS were stopped from 18 March 2019
No demand draft, no compact disc, and no urgent tier
One page gets a useful detail right, and we will say so. It notes that the state route is paid by Khajane II challan through the Karnataka treasury portal, which is the correct mechanism for a state e-Gazette. That is worth knowing if you take the state route. It is not the Central route. For the Central Gazette the fee goes through the Non-Tax Receipt Portal at bharatkosh.gov.in and nowhere else. Another page still lists demand draft as a payment option, which has not been accepted since 2018. And the documents must not be older than one year.
Picturesque Castle, or Umbrella Shaped Hill

Even What the Name Means Is Told Two Ways

The city takes its name from Chitrakaldurga. The encyclopedia entry for the district renders that as picturesque castle in Kannada. Another published account says Chitrakaldurga refers to an umbrella-shaped lofty hill found there. The city is also known as Kallina Kote, the stone fortress, for the rock hills and boulders the fort was built into. Castle, hill, or fortress, depending on which page you are reading.

This is the pattern we now recognise everywhere in this state, and it is worth stating plainly once. Place names are not precise instruments. They are what people called something, written down by whoever was holding the pen, in whatever script and convention they used. Your own name has travelled the same way through school registers, ration cards and bank forms. A Gazette notification does not declare which version was always right. It publishes one dated statement that all of them belong to one person.

Send photographs and let us read the actual forms. Kannada is the most widely spoken language here, with Urdu and Telugu also spoken near the areas bordering Andhra Pradesh, and Anantapur district is on this district's eastern edge. If a name has crossed between scripts on its way to your certificate, that usually shows in the paper itself and almost never in what you would type out for us.
Check This Before You Pay Anybody

Not Every Case in Chitradurga Needs a Gazette

A name error in a birth certificate is corrected by the Registrar of Births and Deaths at the body that registered the birth, under section 15 of the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969. You apply to that Registrar with the supporting documents. No Gazette and no newspaper advertisement are involved. An SSLC or PUC marks card is corrected by the board that issued it. Caste, income and residence certificates are corrected by the issuing authority.

A Gazette is for a full legal name change, after marriage, after divorce, for numerology or by personal choice, and for cases where the same difference repeats across enough records that fixing them one at a time costs more than publishing once. If one paper says Chitaldrug and another says Chitradurga, that is not a case at all. Our name spelling correction page sets out the difference in full.

Send photographs and ask us the plain question, do I actually need this. A good share of the people who write to us do not, and we say so and they pay us nothing. That is not generosity. When a single newspaper advertisement can cost three thousand rupees, telling somebody honestly that they need none of this is worth more to them than anything else we could say.

Our honest advice for Chitradurga: take the Central Gazette. This district sits in the centre of the state on the main highway, borders Anantapur district of Andhra Pradesh to the east, and sends a great many people to Bengaluru, Davanagere and beyond for work and study, which means records with central employers, provident fund accounts and passport files. If your case is purely a Karnataka board record or a state service file, say so and we will tell you the state route is enough, and that Khajane II is how you will pay for it. The state comparison is on our Karnataka page and the national guide is at name change agent in India.
Get Ready

Documents Required for a Name Change in Chitradurga

Keep clear copies ready, and check the dates on anything already prepared.

Notarised name change affidavit on stamp paper, which we draft
The original newspaper carrying your notice, not a cutting or copy
Aadhaar, voter ID or passport as identity proof
Address proof showing your taluk, with a 577 series pin code
Any paper printing Chitaldrug or another older form of the name
Two photographs, two witnesses, and the printed Bharatkosh receipt
One thing worth knowing before you send anything: the guidelines state that documents once submitted are not returned to the applicant, in original or photocopy form, so keep your own copies, and that matters here because a colonial era land record printing Chitaldrug is often the only one a family has. You download your notification from egazette.gov.in under the Weekly Gazette, Part IV, and the hard copy was discontinued from 1 October 2015. For central Government staff, the deed follows the format prescribed under the Ministry of Home Affairs memorandum of 12 March 1987.

The newspaper is the number to watch, and it is the one nobody quotes you up front. A page ranking for this state puts advertisements at Rs 395 to Rs 3,000 depending on the publication. That is an eightfold spread, and it sits on top of every quote you will be given. Ask for the rate of the specific paper before it is booked, ask how many advertisements are being placed and why, and ask how much of the total goes to the Government. Ours is Rs 1,100 on the published schedule plus Rs 20 of stamp duty, paid in your name with the receipt to you, our fee separate and stated, and one newspaper billed at cost.

Most people think the Gazette is the finish line. It is the middle. Here is the whole journey.

NameChangeAgent is a platform built for exactly this one job, done properly. We are based in Delhi and we work with people across Chitradurga district entirely online, from Chitradurga city and Challakere to Hiriyur, Hosadurga, Holalkere, Molakalmuru, Bharamasagara and the villages around them. You send photographs of what you have on WhatsApp. We read them, tell you honestly which route your case needs, and then carry it through. Your affidavit is sworn here, with two ordinary witnesses.

What makes a Chitradurga file different is the sheer number of forms the name itself takes. Eight recorded spellings, four of them treated as official at one time or another, and two encyclopedia articles about the same place that do not agree. Add a district that was abolished in 1882 and reinstated in 1886 without Pavagada, and lost Davanagere in the late 1990s. Meanwhile pages ranking for this state book you two newspapers without mentioning that one of them can cost three thousand rupees. We ask before a single word is drafted.

Name Change in Chitradurga, Frequently Asked Questions

Clear answers to the questions we hear most often.

How do I change my name legally in Chitradurga?
In three steps. A notarised affidavit sworn here with two witnesses, a public notice in one daily local leading newspaper, and a Central Gazette notification with the fee paid on Bharatkosh. We handle all three for you, fully online.
My old paper says Chitaldrug. Is that wrong?
No. The encyclopedia entry for the city records that Chittaldrug, or Chitaldrug, or Chittledroog was the official name used during British rule, and the entry for the district gives Chitaldroog. The city has also been known as Chitradurg, Chitrakaladurga and Chittaldurg. Eight recorded forms in all, and a document using any of them is correct for its period.
How many newspapers do I need?
One. The Department of Publication's guidelines for change of name for an adult say one of the daily local leading newspapers, stating the father's or husband's name with the residential address, with the original forwarded. This matters financially. A page ranking for this state puts newspaper advertisements at Rs 395 to Rs 3,000 depending on the publication, so a second advertisement can cost more than the Rs 1,100 Gazette fee itself.
Was Chitradurga ever not a district?
Yes. Published histories record that in 1882 the Chitaldrug district became a sub-division under Tumkur district, and that in 1886 it was reinstated but without Pavagada taluk, which stayed with Tumkur. Sira taluk had already moved to Tumkur in 1866, and Davanagere district was created out of Chitradurga in the late 1990s.
My family paper names Chitradurga but our land is in Davanagere.
That is expected. Davanagere district was created out of Chitradurga in 1997, along with parts of Shimoga and Bellary districts. A record from before that date naming Chitradurga for an address now in Davanagere is old rather than wrong.
What does the name Chitradurga mean?
Sources differ. The encyclopedia entry for the district renders Chitrakaldurga as picturesque castle in Kannada, while another published account says it refers to an umbrella-shaped lofty hill found there. The city is also known as Kallina Kote, the stone fortress.
How is the fee paid?
For the Central Gazette, through the Non-Tax Receipt Portal at bharatkosh.gov.in only, since 1 October 2018, with NEFT and RTGS stopped from 18 March 2019 and no demand draft accepted. A page ranking for this state correctly notes that the state route is paid by Khajane II challan through the Karnataka treasury portal, but that is the state route and not this one.
What stamp paper value do I need?
Under the Karnataka Stamp Act, 1957, an affidavit is subject to stamp duty of Rs 20. Pages ranking for this state variously specify Rs 20, Rs 50 or Rs 100, and the higher denominations are generally what a vendor stocks rather than what the Act requires.
Does a birth certificate spelling need a Gazette?
No. You apply to the Registrar of Births and Deaths at the body that registered the birth, under section 15 of the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969, with the supporting documents. An SSLC or PUC marks card is corrected by the board that issued it. Neither needs a Gazette or a newspaper advertisement.
How much does a name change cost in Chitradurga?
The Government side is Rs 1,100 on the Central Gazette adult schedule, Rs 3,500 for Indians living abroad, plus Rs 20 stamp duty under the Karnataka Stamp Act, 1957, plus one local newspaper advertisement at that paper's own rate, which is the figure worth asking about first. Our complete service starts at Rs 3,999.
