Savanur is a taluk of this district today. Until 1948 it was a state. Published accounts record Savanur State, ruled by the Nawab of Savanur, as one of the princely states of British India, established in 1680, covering about a hundred and eighty nine square kilometres with a population of some eighteen thousand at the 1901 census. The last ruler acceded to the Dominion of India on 8 March 1948, and the territory became part of Bombay State. In 1956 it transferred to Mysore State, which was renamed Karnataka in 1973.

And one detail tells you how close that past still is. One of the Nawabs' palaces, Majid Castle, is recorded as being in use today as the Taluk Panchayat office, having earlier served as the Tehsildar's office and court. The building where a state was administered is the building where taluk paperwork is done now. If you are from Savanur, your family's oldest documents may name a state that no longer exists, issued from a building you can still walk past.

And Rs 250 in addition for every alias name carried on the application. That last line is the one you will almost never see quoted, and it is the one that surprises people, because a great many families here carry a second name that appears on some papers and not on others.

If your school record shows one form, a land record shows a house name, and a bank passbook shows something else again, say so at the very start. It may be an alias that belongs on the application, and if it does, it changes the fee before you pay rather than after. Being told about it up front is a fair test of whether the person quoting you has actually filed one of these.

Almost every page about Haveri gives the same derivation. The name comes from two Kannada words, havu meaning snake and keri, so the place of snakes. Read those pages side by side, though, and they do not agree on the second half. One glosses keri as lake. Another as lake or village or locality. A third simply says place of snakes and leaves it. And the encyclopedia entry that most of them are copying carries a citation needed marker against the whole derivation.

So the best known fact about this town's name is repeated everywhere, disagrees with itself about what half the word means, and is flagged as unsourced at the top of the chain. We are not saying it is wrong. We are saying that a sentence can be everywhere and still be uncertain, and that is worth remembering when an office speaks about your own name with more confidence than the evidence supports.
