To change your name legally in Haveri, you follow three steps. A notarised affidavit sworn here with two witnesses, public notices in two newspapers, one local and one national, and a Central Gazette notification with the fee paid on Bharatkosh. The adult fee is Rs 1,100, and each alias name you carry adds Rs 250.
One Taluk Here Was a Princely State, and Its Palace Is Now the Panchayat Office
Savanur is a taluk of this district today. Until 1948 it was a state. Published accounts record Savanur State, ruled by the Nawab of Savanur, as one of the princely states of British India, established in 1680, covering about a hundred and eighty nine square kilometres with a population of some eighteen thousand at the 1901 census. The last ruler acceded to the Dominion of India on 8 March 1948, and the territory became part of Bombay State. In 1956 it transferred to Mysore State, which was renamed Karnataka in 1973.
And one detail tells you how close that past still is. One of the Nawabs' palaces, Majid Castle, is recorded as being in use today as the Taluk Panchayat office, having earlier served as the Tehsildar's office and court. The building where a state was administered is the building where taluk paperwork is done now. If you are from Savanur, your family's oldest documents may name a state that no longer exists, issued from a building you can still walk past.
Papers From Savanur Can Name Six Different Governments
Follow a single house in Savanur through the record. Savanur State until 8 March 1948. Bombay State from that date. Mysore State from 1956. Karnataka from 1973. Dharwad district until 1997, because the district administration's own history page records that Haveri, along with Gadag, was earlier part of undivided Dharwad district. And Haveri district from 24 August 1997, when it was carved out following demands from people here.
Six layers, and the house never moved. This is the same depth we found in Raichur at the other end of the state, and it produces the same practical problem. A family here can hold six entirely valid documents that name six different administrative realities, and be told at a counter that they do not match. They match perfectly. They are just dated.
If You Carry an Alias Name, That Is Rs 250 More Each
Here is the fee schedule as we actually file it. Rs 1,100 for an adult. Rs 1,700 for a minor. Rs 1,350 for a public notice. Rs 3,500 for Indians living abroad. And Rs 250 in addition for every alias name carried on the application. That last line is the one you will almost never see quoted, and it is the one that surprises people, because a great many families here carry a second name that appears on some papers and not on others.
If your school record shows one form, a land record shows a house name, and a bank passbook shows something else again, say so at the very start. It may be an alias that belongs on the application, and if it does, it changes the fee before you pay rather than after. Being told about it up front is a fair test of whether the person quoting you has actually filed one of these.
The Central Gazette Process for a Name Change in Haveri
This is the route accepted everywhere in India and abroad. Here is each step.
Prepare and Notarise the Affidavit Here
A sworn declaration on non-judicial stamp paper with two ordinary witnesses, attested by a Notary Public or First Class Magistrate in Haveri. Never self attested.
Publish in Two Newspapers
One local paper and one national, both carrying your father's or husband's name and your full residential address. The originals go with the file.
Pay on Bharatkosh and Send the File
Pay through the Non-Tax Receipt Portal, print the receipt, and the complete file goes by post or courier to the Controller of Publications, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054.
Buy Extra Copies of Both Papers on the Day They Print
One page ranking for this state tells readers to retain two original copies of the newspaper issue carrying the advertisement. That is good advice and we will say so plainly. Here is why it matters. The originals are forwarded with your file, and the guidelines state that documents once submitted are not returned to the applicant, in original or in photocopy form. So whatever you send is gone.
Buy extra copies of both papers on the morning they carry your notice. Not a photocopy, not a phone photograph, the actual paper. Newspaper offices rarely hold back issues for long and tracking down a copy of a specific day's edition six months later is genuinely difficult. It costs a few rupees on the day and it saves an unpleasant afternoon later, because your own file is the only proof you will keep.
Both Notices Must Match the Affidavit Word for Word
Bharatkosh Only, and Nothing Older Than a Year
The Most Copied Sentence About This Town's Name Is Marked as Unverified
Almost every page about Haveri gives the same derivation. The name comes from two Kannada words, havu meaning snake and keri, so the place of snakes. Read those pages side by side, though, and they do not agree on the second half. One glosses keri as lake. Another as lake or village or locality. A third simply says place of snakes and leaves it. And the encyclopedia entry that most of them are copying carries a citation needed marker against the whole derivation.
So the best known fact about this town's name is repeated everywhere, disagrees with itself about what half the word means, and is flagged as unsourced at the top of the chain. We are not saying it is wrong. We are saying that a sentence can be everywhere and still be uncertain, and that is worth remembering when an office speaks about your own name with more confidence than the evidence supports.
Not Every Case in Haveri Needs a Gazette
A name error in a birth certificate is corrected by the Registrar of Births and Deaths at the body that registered the birth, under section 15 of the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969. You apply to that Registrar with the supporting documents. No Gazette and no newspaper advertisement are involved. An SSLC or PUC marks card is corrected by the board that issued it. Caste, income and residence certificates are corrected by the issuing authority.
A Gazette is for a full legal name change, after marriage, after divorce, for numerology or by personal choice, and for cases where the same difference repeats across enough records that fixing them one at a time costs more than publishing once. If one paper names Dharwad district and another names Haveri, that is not a case at all.

Your Complete Name Change Journey in Haveri, Handled by NameChangeAgent
Most people think the Gazette is the finish line. It is the middle. Here is the whole journey.
NameChangeAgent is a platform built for exactly this one job, done properly. We are based in Delhi and we work with people across Haveri district entirely online, from Haveri town and Ranebennur to Byadgi, Hangal, Savanur, Shiggaon, Hirekerur, Rattihalli and the villages around them. You send photographs of what you have on WhatsApp. We read them, tell you honestly which route your case needs, and then carry it through. Your affidavit is notarised here, with two ordinary witnesses.
What makes a Haveri file different is the depth under one address. Papers from Savanur can name a princely state that acceded in 1948, then Bombay State, then Mysore State, then Karnataka, then Dharwad district, then Haveri from 24 August 1997. Add an alias name, which many families here carry, and the Government fee changes before you file. We ask about all of it before a single word is drafted, because every one of those is cheaper to handle at the start than to explain at a counter later.
Free Consultation on Your Haveri Case
Send your papers on WhatsApp with the taluk, the years and any alias name, exactly as printed. We tell you whether your difference is a correction or a change, whether the state or Central route fits, and whether you need a Gazette at all. No charge and no obligation.

Fees Paid on Bharatkosh, File Couriered
We pay the correct schedule, including any alias charge, through the Non-Tax Receipt Portal in your name, print the receipt, and courier the complete file to the Controller of Publications in Delhi. No demand draft and no disc.
Your Gazette Notification Retrieved
Once published we retrieve your notification from egazette.gov.in, Weekly Gazette Part IV, and send it to you. Nobody should be charging you extra for a hard copy, which was discontinued in 2015.

Aadhaar, PAN, passport, bank, provident fund, employer and land records. Most agents stop before this stage, and this is the stage that actually matters.

This page explains a documentation process and is not legal advice on your individual case. The fee lines above, including the additional charge for each alias name, reflect the schedule as we file it in practice; fees are set by the Government and are revised, so confirm the current position before you pay. The historical material is included only to explain why papers from this district name different states and districts, and where published sources differ, as they do on the meaning of this town's name, we set out the difference rather than choosing quietly. Stamp duty rates are set by statute and are amended from time to time. Birth certificate, marks card, caste, income and residence certificate corrections follow the issuing authority's own procedure. For a contested matter, or anything before a court, you need a lawyer engaged for you specifically.
