To change your name legally in Hazaribagh, you follow three steps. A notarised affidavit, a public notice in one daily local leading newspaper, and a Gazette notification with the fee paid on Bharatkosh. The department's guidelines say one newspaper, not two, and that your documents must not be older than one year.
One Newspaper, Not Two, and Nothing Older Than a Year
The page ranking for a name change in Hazaribagh tells you to publish in two newspapers, one in the regional language and one in English, and to send a demand draft. Both instructions are wrong, and you can check that yourself. The Department of Publication's published guidelines for change of name for an adult state that the change of name should be advertised in one of the daily local leading newspapers, stating the father's or husband's name along with the residential address, and that the newspaper is forwarded to the department in original. One newspaper. The guidelines do not restrict which language that paper is in.
The demand draft is worse, because it has not been the method for years. The same guidelines state that payment has to be made through the Non-Tax Receipt Portal only, at bharatkosh.gov.in, with effect from 1 October 2018 under a departmental order, and that payment directly through NEFT or RTGS was stopped from 18 March 2019. You pay online, print the receipt, and it goes into the file. A demand draft sent today is money sitting still while your application waits.

Four Districts Were Carved Out of Hazaribagh
In 1872 Hazaribagh district covered 7,021 square miles, about 18,180 square kilometres, with 771,875 inhabitants. It is one of the oldest districts in Jharkhand and it has been cut four times since. Giridih district was split from Hazaribagh on 6 December 1972. Chatra and Koderma were created out of it in the 1990s, the Koderma district administration recording its own date as 10 April 1994. Hazaribagh left Bihar when Jharkhand was formed on 15 November 2000. Then on 12 September 2007 Ramgarh was carved out of Hazaribagh territory as well.
Look at the district today and it is bounded by Koderma and Gaya in Bihar to the north, Giridih and Bokaro to the east, Ramgarh to the south and Chatra to the west. Four of those neighbours were part of Hazaribagh within living memory. That is the exact opposite of a district like Bokaro, which was assembled out of pieces of two others. Hazaribagh is the parent that kept giving pieces away, and it means an old family paper from here can name Hazaribagh for an address that today sits in an entirely different district.
Hazaribagh Appears on Old Maps as Ocunhazry
There are two accounts of where the name comes from. The popular one is Persian, hazar meaning a thousand and bagh meaning garden, giving a city of a thousand gardens. Sir John Houlton, a British administrator who wrote about the region, gave a different account. He held that the town takes its name from the small villages of Okni and Hazari, which appear on old maps as Ocunhazry. The last part of the name probably came from a mango grove that served as a camping ground for troops and travellers on the military road built from Kolkata to Varanasi from 1782 onwards.
We include this for a reason that is not decorative. If the name of the town itself has been written down in more than one form by the people keeping the records, nobody should be surprised that a family surname has too. A spelling that differs between a school register and an Aadhaar entry is usually the record keeper's hand, not the family's mistake, and that distinction decides whether you need a Gazette notification at all or a much cheaper correction.

Not Every Case in Hazaribagh Needs a Gazette
Many agents sell a Gazette for every case, and this district gives them several openings. Pointing at Hazaribagh on a paper for an address now in Ramgarh. Pointing at Bihar on anything before 2000. Pointing at a surname spelt one way in 1985 and another way today. None of those is a defect. Each was correct when it was written, and an affidavit that names them with dates is what a verifier actually needs, not a notification.
A name error in a birth certificate is corrected by the Registrar at the local body where the birth was registered. Caste, income, residence and domicile certificates are corrected by the issuing authority at the block or circle office. Land record entries go through the revenue side. A Gazette is for a full legal name change, after marriage, after divorce, for numerology or by personal choice, and for cases where the same difference repeats across several records. Our name spelling correction page explains the difference.

Your Complete Name Change Journey in Hazaribagh, Handled by NameChangeAgent
Most people think the Gazette is the finish line. It is the middle. Here is the whole journey.
NameChangeAgent is a platform built for exactly this one job, done properly. We are based in Delhi and we work with families across Hazaribagh district entirely online, from Hazaribagh town, Katkamsandi and Ichak to Barkagaon, Barhi, Chouparan, Bishnugarh, Keredari and Daru. You send photographs of what you have on WhatsApp. We read them, tell you honestly which route your case needs, and then carry it through. You do not have to travel anywhere for this.
What makes a Hazaribagh file different is that this district has given away four others. An old paper here can name Hazaribagh for an address that is now in Giridih, Chatra, Koderma or Ramgarh, and all of it is correct. Meanwhile the pages ranking for this search are years behind, telling people to book two newspaper advertisements and send a demand draft, when the department's own guidelines say one daily local leading newspaper and payment through Bharatkosh only. A generic online form asks for none of this. We ask before a single word is drafted, because a file worded correctly the first time does not come back.
