To change your name legally in Lohardaga, you follow three steps. A notarised affidavit, a public notice in one daily local leading newspaper, and a Central Gazette notification with the fee paid on Bharatkosh. This district lost its own name in 1899 and got it back in 1983, so papers here can name Ranchi for eighty four years of that gap.
Lohardaga Was the Largest District Here Until It Was Renamed Ranchi
Almost nobody outside this district knows this. After the Kol rising of 1881 and 1882 the South-West non-regulation frontier was created, and Lohardaga district came into existence. It was the largest district in the Chota Nagpur Division of the Bengal Presidency, covering roughly 31,190 square kilometres of what is now southwest Jharkhand. In 1892 it was split into Palamu and Ranchi. And then, as the Gumla district administration records in one plain sentence, in 1899 the name of the district was changed from Lohardaga to Ranchi.
So the name was simply lifted off and a different one put in its place, and the Lohardaga area became part of the district that had taken its name. Lohardaga was made a sub division in 1972 and only in 1983, when Ranchi was split into Ranchi, Lohardaga and Gumla, did it get its name back as a district. Eighty four years later, and at 1,502 square kilometres, under five per cent of what it once covered. It is now the least populous district in Jharkhand.

What the Name Lohardaga Actually Means
The district administration gives three accounts on its own history page and does not choose between them. In Jain texts there is a reference to Lord Mahavir's visit to Lore-a-Yadaga, which means river of tears in Mundari. The Ain-e-Akbari, the great record of Akbar's empire, mentions a place called Kismate Lohardaga. And in Hindi the word may be built from Lohar, an ironmonger, and Daga, a centre, giving centre of iron mining. The district is called Bauxite Nagri today for the same reason.
River of tears, a line in a Mughal register, or a place where iron was worked. Three explanations, and the one nobody planned is the one that fits a district which lost its name for eighty four years. We are not going to pretend we can settle which is right, and neither should anybody else. What it shows is something worth holding on to when your own documents disagree with each other. Names accumulate explanations after the fact. They are not sealed at birth.
Papers From Those Years Correctly Name Ranchi
Here is the practical version of all that history, and it is the most useful paragraph on this page. Between 1899 and 1983 this area was part of Ranchi district. A birth registration, a school certificate, a land paper or a service record issued here in that period names Ranchi, and it is correct. Between 1972 and 1983 a paper may name Lohardaga sub division while the district is still Ranchi, and that is correct as well. And anything issued before 15 November 2000 names Bihar, whichever district it gives.
That means a single family in Lohardaga can hold papers naming Ranchi, Bihar and Lohardaga, all correct, all describing the same house. An agent who tells you the Ranchi ones are outdated and need fixing is either not reading carefully or is selling you something. Our page for the parent district is at name change agent in Ranchi, which was itself called Lohardaga until 1899.

Not Every Case in Lohardaga Needs a Gazette
Many agents sell a Gazette for every case, and eighty four years of Ranchi era paperwork is an easy thing to point at. Pointing at Ranchi on a paper from before 1983. Pointing at Bihar on anything before November 2000. Pointing at a name written in Nagpuri or Mundari form on an older register and calling it wrong. None of those is a defect. All were correct when written, and a transliteration is not a change of name.
A name error in a birth certificate is corrected by the Registrar at the local body where the birth was registered. Caste, income, residence and domicile certificates are corrected by the issuing authority at the block or circle office. A Gazette is for a full legal name change, after marriage, after divorce, for numerology or by personal choice, and for cases where the same difference repeats across several records. Our name spelling correction page explains the difference.

Your Complete Name Change Journey in Lohardaga, Handled by NameChangeAgent
Most people think the Gazette is the finish line. It is the middle. Here is the whole journey.
NameChangeAgent is a platform built for exactly this one job, done properly. We are based in Delhi and we work with families across Lohardaga district entirely online, from Lohardaga town and Kuru to Senha, Kisko, Bhandra, Kairo, Jowang and the bauxite belt around them. You send photographs of what you have on WhatsApp. We read them, tell you honestly which route your case needs, and then carry it through. Your affidavit is made where you live.
What makes a Lohardaga file different is the eighty four year gap. This district was the largest in Chota Nagpur, lost its name to Ranchi in 1899, and only got it back in 1983 at under five per cent of its old size. So papers here name Ranchi for most of the last century, and Bihar for everything before November 2000. Add Hindi, Nagpuri, Mundari and Kurukh in the same records, and one family holds several correct versions. Meanwhile the pages ranking for this state tell you to book two newspaper advertisements and make your affidavit in Delhi, neither of which is right. We ask before a single word is drafted.
