To change your name legally in Palamu, you follow three steps. A notarised affidavit, a public notice in one daily local leading newspaper, and a Central Gazette notification with the fee paid on Bharatkosh. Your own district headquarters shows why the last stage matters, because Daltonganj became Medininagar and the old name is still on the court, the station and the assembly seat.
Daltonganj Became Medininagar. The Old Name Is Still Everywhere.
The district administration puts it plainly on its own page. Daltonganj got its name from Colonel Dalton, Commissioner of Chhotanagpur in 1861, and the new name of Daltonganj is now Medininagar, after the king Medini Rai. A town named for a British officer, renamed for a local king. The change is real and official, and the civic body is called Medininagar Municipal Corporation.
Now look at what still says Daltonganj. The railway station is Daltonganj railway station, station code DTO. The court is listed as Civil Courts Palamau at Daltonganj. The assembly constituency is Daltonganj. The district administration's own page writes the headquarters as Daltonganj, with Medininagar in brackets after it. Years on, the new name is the legal one and the old name is still sitting in office after office, waiting to be changed one record at a time.

The Fee and How It Is Paid
Even the District's Name Is Spelt Two Ways Officially
The district administration writes Palamu. The judgeship writes Palamau, and calls itself Civil Courts Palamau at Daltonganj. Both are official, both are current, and both are correct in the sense that matters, which is that the office using each one has always used it. Nobody is going to reconcile them, and nobody needs to.
We point this out because people arrive at us apologetic about a spelling difference in their own papers, as though it were carelessness on their family's part. It usually is not. Records are written by whoever is holding the pen, in the form that office uses, and over decades those forms drift apart. A district that appears as Palamu on one government site and Palamau on another is not a district in trouble. It is just how written records work, and it is precisely why the Gazette exists, to tie the versions to one person in one published place.
Your Older Papers May Name Palamu for Another District
The Palamu judgeship records that Garhwa and Latehar were earlier two sub divisions of Palamu, and were subsequently separated and made districts. So if your family is from the Garhwa or Latehar side, papers issued before those separations correctly name Palamu, and the address on them sits in a different district today. The Palamu division itself, with its headquarters at Medininagar, now covers all three, Palamu, Garhwa and Latehar.
On when the district itself came into existence, the sources disagree and we are not going to hide that. The district administration's own page states that Palamu came into existence on 1 January 1928. Wikipedia's article says the district was formed in 1892. And an account of the 1854 reorganisation lists Palamau as already one of the five districts of the Chota Nagpur Division, alongside Hazaribagh, Ranchi, Manbhum and Singhbhum. We follow the district administration's date of 1 January 1928 and tell you the disagreement exists rather than choosing one quietly.
Jharkhand Gazette or Central Gazette in Palamu?
With Bihar on the northern border and three districts sharing one history, this is not close.

Not Every Case in Palamu Needs a Gazette
Many agents sell a Gazette for every case. Here the easy pitches are pointing at Daltonganj on an older paper and calling it obsolete, pointing at Palamu on a Garhwa or Latehar address, pointing at Palamau instead of Palamu, or pointing at Bihar on anything before November 2000. None of those is a defect. All were correct when written, and a spelling that differs between two government offices is not your mistake to confess to.
A name error in a birth certificate is corrected by the Registrar at the local body where the birth was registered. Caste, income, residence and domicile certificates are corrected by the issuing authority at the block or circle office. Land record entries go through the revenue side. A Gazette is for a full legal name change, after marriage, after divorce, for numerology or by personal choice, and for cases where the same difference repeats across several records. Our name spelling correction page explains the difference.

Your Complete Name Change Journey in Palamu, Handled by NameChangeAgent
Most people think the Gazette is the finish line. It is the middle. Your own headquarters proves it.
NameChangeAgent is a platform built for exactly this one job, done properly. We are based in Delhi and we work with families across Palamu district entirely online, from Medininagar and Daltonganj to Hussainabad, Chhatarpur, Bishrampur, Panki, Hariharganj, Chainpur, Patan and Manatu. You send photographs of what you have on WhatsApp. We read them, tell you honestly which route your case needs, and then carry it through. Your affidavit is made where you live.
What makes a Palamu file different is that this district has lived the whole problem already. Daltonganj became Medininagar, and the railway station, the court and the assembly seat still carry the old name. The district writes itself Palamu and its own judgeship writes Palamau. Papers from the Garhwa or Latehar side name Palamu for addresses now elsewhere, and anything before November 2000 names Bihar. Nobody here needs persuading that a name can sit in two forms across different offices, because the district itself does. We ask before a single word is drafted, and we do not stop at the Gazette.
