Quick Answer

To change your name legally in Sonipat, you follow three steps. A notarised affidavit on stamp paper, a public notice in one Hindi and one English newspaper, and a Gazette notification. Write the district exactly as your own identity proof spells it, because Sonipat and Sonepat are both in official use right now.

Not History, Happening Now

The Same Government Spells This District Two Ways, Today

In most places an old spelling and a current one sit neatly on either side of a date. Here they do not. The district court works under the name Sonepat while the district police work under Sonipat. The district administration's own website carries both in a single passage, listing the sub divisions as Ganaur, Sonepat, Kharkhoda and Gohana and the blocks as Ganaur, Sonipat, Rai and the rest. Both spellings are correct, both are in use, and neither is being phased out.

It is not only the district. Kharkhoda also appears as Kharkhauda, and Ganaur also appears as Gannaur, in official material. So a person here can hold a court paper saying Sonepat, a tehsil certificate saying Sonipat and an Aadhaar saying whichever the operator typed, all issued in the same year by arms of the same state. There is nothing to correct in any of them. What there is, is a file that has to explain itself, because a verifier in another state reads two spellings as a discrepancy and has no way of knowing that both offices are right.

The rule that solves it: write the district on the affidavit and the newspaper notice exactly as your own identity proof spells it, then have the affidavit list every other spelling that appears on your documents, naming the paper and its year. Do not standardise them and do not pick the one you like. Matching your proof is what matters, explaining the rest is what stops the questions.
Central Gazette

The Central Gazette Process for a Name Change in Sonipat

This is the route accepted everywhere in India and abroad. Here is exactly what happens at each step.

Prepare and Notarise the Affidavit

A sworn declaration on non-judicial stamp paper, signed with two witnesses and attested by a Notary Public or First Class Magistrate in Sonipat.

Publish in Hindi and English Newspapers

One Hindi daily and one English daily, carrying the same old name, new name, address and affidavit date.

File With the Department of Publication

The complete file goes to the Controller of Publications, Civil Lines, Delhi, about forty five kilometres away, and your notice appears in Part IV of the Gazette of India.

Step 1 in Detail

What Your Name Change Affidavit Must Contain

Your old name exactly as printed on your existing documents
Your new name, spelt exactly as you want it recorded forever
Your house number, sector or village, and tehsil exactly as on your proof
Every spelling of the district and tehsil that appears on your papers
A declaration that both names belong to the same person
Your signature, two witness signatures, and the notary stamp with date
Decide the initials once, not later: inconsistent initials are the most common reason a file is returned. Choose between J. S. Dahiya, J S Dahiya or the full expanded form, fix the spacing and the surname spelling, and keep it identical on all three documents.
Step 2 in Detail

The Hindi and English Newspaper Rules

Two papers are needed, one Hindi and one English, not just one
The notice must repeat the same old name, new name and address as the affidavit
It must mention the date on which the affidavit was made
The advertisement usually appears in the classified section
Keep the original dated cuttings showing the paper name
Even one letter spelt differently can get your whole file returned
Cost of this step: two budget dailies cost about Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,500 together, while premium national papers can cost Rs 2,500 to Rs 5,000. Delhi editions reach Sonipat every morning, so a notice is easy to place.
Step 3 in Detail

What Goes Into Your Gazette File

The signed Gazette application form in the prescribed proforma
The original notarised affidavit
Original cuttings of both newspaper advertisements
A request letter addressed to the publishing authority
Identity proof, two photographs and the soft copy of the notice
The fee receipt, paid in the applicant's own name
Government fee and time: Rs 1,100 for an adult and Rs 1,700 for a minor for the Central Gazette. Publication usually takes 4 to 6 weeks after a complete file reaches the department, and the e-Gazette copy carries the same legal weight as the printed one.
Delhi, Then Rohtak, Then Its Own

This District Is Younger Than Most People Living In It

Sonipat district was created on 22 December 1972. Before that it was part of Rohtak district, and the district court records that until 1912 this area was part of Delhi district, being included in Rohtak in September of that year. Gohana tehsil stayed with Rohtak right up to the day Sonipat was formed. The town itself is far older and was historically known as Swarnprastha.

So anyone born here before December 1972 has a birth record naming Rohtak, not Sonipat, and a family paper from before 1912 may name Delhi. Both are correct for their own year and neither is an error. Our Rohtak page tells the same story from the parent district's side, including how Gohana moved to Sonipat, came back to Rohtak temporarily, and then moved to Sonipat again. If your village is in that belt, the year printed on each paper is what settles which district was correct at the time.

Send the oldest paper in the house: a matriculation certificate, a jamabandi extract, an old ration card or a service record. If it names Rohtak or Delhi rather than Sonipat, that is the document we most need to see, because it is the one a verifier will stumble on.
Compare the Two Routes

Haryana Gazette or Central Gazette for Sonipat?

Both are valid. Here is the honest difference, so you pick the right one the first time.

PointHaryana GazetteCentral Gazette of India
Published byPrinting and Stationery Department, Haryana, at Sector 18, ChandigarhDepartment of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi
Distance from SonipatAbout 214 kilometres to ChandigarhAbout 45 kilometres, and filed by post anyway
Where it is acceptedMainly within HaryanaEvery state and Union Territory
Working or studying in DelhiQuestioned across the borderAccepted without argument
Two spellings across your documentsFine for a state department recordOne published proof that settles it everywhere
Papers naming Rohtak or Delhi from an earlier eraAdequate within the stateAccepted in every district and state
Passport and going abroadUsually not accepted for visa and attestationThe proof passport offices and embassies look for
Government feeAs set by the state, non-refundableRs 1,100 adult, Rs 1,700 minor
Our honest advice for Sonipat: Delhi is forty five kilometres away and Chandigarh is two hundred and fourteen. This district sits inside the National Capital Region, an enormous number of people here work or study across the Delhi border, and the spelling split makes a nationally accepted proof worth more than usual. Take the Central Gazette once. The state level detail is on our Haryana name change guide, and the full comparison is in our name change agent in India guide.
When Two Offices Disagree

You Cannot Correct a Paper That Was Never Wrong

People here often arrive having already tried to fix this the hard way. They take the court paper saying Sonepat to a tehsil office and ask for it to be changed to Sonipat, or the other way round. The office declines, correctly, because nothing on the paper is wrong. Some then pay an agent for a Gazette notification believing it will harmonise the spelling everywhere. It will not. A Gazette publishes a change of a person's name. It has no effect at all on how an office spells a place.

The workable answer is duller and it costs nothing. You accept that both papers are valid, you use the spelling on your identity proof wherever you are asked to write an address, and you carry an affidavit that lists the variants with the document and year each one came from. That single page does the work that no amount of running between counters will do. If a specific office still refuses to accept your file over it, ask for the refusal in writing, because a written order can be taken upward and a verbal one cannot, which our Karnal page explains in full.

Before you pay anyone for a Gazette: send us photographs of the two papers that disagree. If the only difference is a place spelling, we will tell you plainly that you do not need a Gazette and what to do instead. If the difference is in your own name, that is a different matter and we will say so.
Save Your Money

Not Every Case in Sonipat Needs a Gazette

Many agents sell a Gazette for every case. That is not honest, and in this district the commonest reason people are sold one is a place spelling that was never wrong. Sonipat or Sonepat, Kharkhoda or Kharkhauda, Ganaur or Gannaur, a paper naming Rohtak before 1972, or one naming Delhi before 1912. None of those is a name change problem. Those need a properly worded affidavit, not a notification.

A name error in a birth certificate is corrected by the Registrar through the Sonipat Municipal Corporation, or the municipal committee or gram panchayat where the birth was registered. Caste, income, residence and domicile certificates are corrected by the issuing authority at the tehsil or SDM office, and land record entries through the revenue side and the patwari. A Gazette is for a full legal name change, after marriage, after divorce, for numerology or by personal choice, and for cases where the same difference repeats across several records.

Your Complete Name Change Journey in Sonipat, Handled by NameChangeAgent

Most people think the Gazette is the finish line. It is the middle. Here is the whole journey, and where we stand beside you at each stage.

NameChangeAgent is a platform built for exactly this one job, done properly, in your own city. We are based in Delhi, forty five kilometres down the highway, and we work with families across Sonipat district entirely online. You send photographs of what you have on WhatsApp. We read them, tell you honestly which route your case needs, and then carry it through. Often the most useful thing we say in the first message is that you do not need us at all.

What makes a Sonipat file different is what you have already read on this page. Two spellings of the district that are both official today, so a court paper and a tehsil certificate can disagree in the same year. Tehsil names that do the same thing. A district younger than most of the people living in it, so older birth records say Rohtak and much older papers say Delhi. A generic online form asks about none of that, and an agent working from a template will sell a Gazette to fix a spelling that a Gazette cannot touch. We ask before a single word is drafted, because a file worded correctly the first time does not come back.

Gazette Filed and Followed Up

The complete file goes to the publishing authority, and we track it through to publication rather than leaving you to chase it.

Every Document Updated Afterwards

Aadhaar, PAN, passport, bank, provident fund, property and college records. Most agents stop before this stage, and this is the stage that actually matters.

People Also Ask

Name Change in Sonipat, Frequently Asked Questions

Clear answers to the questions we hear most often.

How do I change my name legally in Sonipat?
In three steps. A notarised affidavit on stamp paper, a public notice in one Hindi and one English newspaper, and a Gazette notification. We handle all three for you, fully online.
Is it Sonipat or Sonepat?
Both, and both are in official use right now. The district court works under Sonepat while the police work under Sonipat, and the district administration's own site uses both. Neither spelling is wrong.
My court paper says Sonepat and my certificate says Sonipat, which do I fix?
Neither. Nothing on either paper is wrong. Use the spelling on your identity proof when you write an address, and let the affidavit list the other variants with the document and year each came from.
Will a Gazette make every office use the same spelling?
No. A Gazette publishes a change of a person's name. It has no effect on how an office spells a place, and anyone selling you one for that reason is selling you something that will not work.
Why does my tehsil appear as Kharkhauda on one paper and Kharkhoda on another?
The same thing happens with tehsil names here. Ganaur also appears as Gannaur. Record each as printed and state that they refer to the same place.
My birth certificate says Rohtak, not Sonipat, is it valid?
Yes. Sonipat district was created on 22 December 1972, so anyone born here before that has a record naming Rohtak. It is correct for its year.
My old family paper names Delhi, how is that possible?
This area was part of Delhi district until 1912, when it was included in Rohtak. Papers from before that naming Delhi are genuine.
Should I take the Haryana Gazette or the Central Gazette?
Delhi is about forty five kilometres from Sonipat and Chandigarh is about two hundred and fourteen. This district is in the National Capital Region and most people here have records across the Delhi border, so the Central Gazette is usually the right choice.
How much does a name change cost in Sonipat?
The Central Gazette Government fee is Rs 1,100 for an adult and Rs 1,700 for a minor. The Haryana Gazette fee is separate and non-refundable, and newspaper and affidavit charges are extra. Our complete service starts at Rs 3,999.
Will the Gazette update my Aadhaar and PAN automatically?
No. The Gazette is the proof of the change. You then apply to each authority separately, and each has its own process. We guide you through Aadhaar, PAN, passport, provident fund, bank and property records after publication.
