Start Your Name Change in Bagalkote
Fill this quick form and our team will call you back with the process, documents and cost.
To change your name legally in Bagalkote, you follow three steps. A notarised affidavit sworn here with two witnesses, public notices in two newspapers, one local and one national, and a Central Gazette notification with the fee paid on Bharatkosh. The adult fee is Rs 1,100, and each alias name you carry adds Rs 250.
The Original Bagalkote Is Under Water, and a New Town Was Built for Its People
Published accounts put it in one plain sentence. The original Bagalkote town remains in the waters of the Almatti dam reservoir, and a new city was formed to accommodate the population. Not renamed. Not redrawn. Submerged, with a new town built alongside for the people who lived there.
We have written about twenty two districts in this state now, and this is the only one where an address on an old document may refer to somewhere that is physically no longer above water. Everywhere else the question is what a place was called. Here, for some families, it is where the place was. That is worth saying out loud, because it changes what an affidavit has to do.
Six Towns in This District Are Recorded Under Earlier Names
Stone inscriptions give Bagadige as the early name of Bagalkote. Badami was Vatapi. Aihole was Ayyavole and also Aryapura, meaning noble city. Pattadakal was Raktapura, the red town, and later Pattadakal Kisuvoval. Mudhol was traditionally Muduvollal, literally lovely town. Jamkhandi takes its name from a Chalukya temple to Jambukeshwara. And Bagalkote itself is generally read as door fort, from bagal and kote.
Six towns, one district, and every one of them appears in the record under a name it no longer uses. Nobody treats those earlier forms as errors. They are simply what each place was called when somebody wrote it down. That is the whole of what we do with your documents, at a smaller scale and with more at stake.
If You Carry an Alias Name, That Is Rs 250 More Each
Here is the fee schedule as we actually file it. Rs 1,100 for an adult. Rs 1,700 for a minor. Rs 1,350 for a public notice. Rs 3,500 for Indians living abroad. And Rs 250 in addition for every alias name carried on the application. That last line is the one you will almost never see quoted, and it is the one that surprises people, because a great many families here carry a second name that appears on some papers and not on others.
Meanwhile a page written specifically about this district puts the fee at about Rs 1,000 for residents, while the same site's own state page gives a range starting at Rs 1,100. If a site cannot hold one figure steady across two of its own pages, the alias line was never going to appear on either. Tell us at the very start and the fee changes before you pay rather than after.
The Central Gazette Process for a Name Change in Bagalkote
This is the route accepted everywhere in India and abroad. Here is each step.
Prepare and Notarise the Affidavit Here
A sworn declaration on non-judicial stamp paper with two ordinary witnesses, attested by a Notary Public or First Class Magistrate in Bagalkote. Never self attested.
Publish in Two Newspapers
One local paper and one national, both carrying your father's or husband's name and your full residential address. The originals go with the file.
Pay on Bharatkosh and Send the File
Pay through the Non-Tax Receipt Portal, print the receipt, and the complete file goes by post or courier to the Controller of Publications, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054.
There Is No Bagalkote Government Press to Submit Anything To
A page written specifically about the gazette office in this district tells readers, in one paragraph, that the main Government Gazette Office of Bagalkote is located in Bengaluru. Then further down the same page it tells them to submit the application and all documents to the Bagalkote Government Press. Those cannot both be true, and neither instruction is useful. Bengaluru is roughly four hundred and eighty kilometres away, and there is no Bagalkote Government Press to walk into.
For the Central route the question does not arise at all. The completed file goes by post or courier to the Controller of Publications, Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054, and nobody stands at a counter anywhere. From a district this far from the state capital, that is not a small convenience. It is the difference between a courier receipt and two days on a bus for an office that may not exist.
Both Notices Must Match the Affidavit Word for Word
Bharatkosh Only, and Nothing Older Than a Year
This District Was Carved Out of Bijapur, Not Vijayapura
Bagalkote district was created in 1997 by bifurcating the district next door, under a Government of Karnataka notification numbered RD 42 LRD 87 Part III. At the time, that district was called Bijapur. It became Vijayapura in 2014. So a widely read encyclopedia entry that says this district was carved out of Vijayapura in 1997 has quietly applied a name that did not exist for another seventeen years.
It is a small slip and nobody is misled by much. We mention it because it is the exact mistake people are punished for at counters. Writing the current name onto a past event feels tidy and reads well, and it makes the record wrong. Your affidavit has to do the opposite, which is to name each place as your document names it and let the dates explain the rest. Our page for the parent district is at Vijayapura.
Not Every Case in Bagalkote Needs a Gazette
A name error in a birth certificate is corrected by the Registrar of Births and Deaths at the body that registered the birth, under section 15 of the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969. You apply to that Registrar with the supporting documents. No Gazette and no newspaper advertisement are involved. An SSLC or PUC marks card is corrected by the board that issued it. Caste, income and residence certificates are corrected by the issuing authority.
A Gazette is for a full legal name change, after marriage, after divorce, for numerology or by personal choice, and for cases where the same difference repeats across enough records that fixing them one at a time costs more than publishing once. If one paper names Bijapur district and another names Bagalkote, that is not a case at all. Our name spelling correction page sets out the difference in full.

Six towns in the district are recorded under earlier names, and Ptolemy wrote two of them in Greek in the second century. Add an alias name, which many families here carry, and the Government fee changes before you file. We ask about all of it before a single word is drafted.

This page explains a documentation process and is not legal advice on your individual case. The fee lines above, including the additional charge for each alias name, reflect the schedule as we file it in practice; fees are set by the Government and are revised, so confirm the current position before you pay. The historical material is included only to explain why papers from this district name different places, and where published sources differ, as they do on this district's taluk count and on the year the state was renamed, we set out the difference rather than choosing quietly. Details of rehabilitation and land award entitlements arising from the reservoir are a separate matter handled by the authorities concerned. Stamp duty rates are set by statute and are amended from time to time. Birth certificate, marks card, caste, income and residence certificate corrections follow the issuing authority's own procedure. For a contested matter, or anything before a court, you need a lawyer engaged for you specifically.
