Chikkamagaluru means the younger daughter's town, from chikka, magala and ooru in Kannada, and is said to have been given as a dowry to the younger daughter of Rukmangada, the chief of Sakrepatna. Another part of the town, bestowed on the elder daughter, is Hiremagalur, the elder daughter's town. Then comes the sentence we like. But some old inscriptions reveal that these two places were known as Kiriya-muguli and Piriya-muguli.
So there are two towns named for two sisters, and both of them are recorded in the inscriptions under different names again. The government page does not choose. It gives you the story people tell and the older evidence side by side, and leaves you to hold both. That is a fair description of how names actually work, and it is the same courtesy we extend to whatever your own documents say.
The District Has Been Renamed Twice, and Kadur Is Still Here
The district administration's history page opens with a sentence worth reading twice. Chickmagalur district was called Kadur district till 1947. So the district took the name of a different headquarters town for most of its recorded existence, and changed to this one at independence. Kadur did not disappear. It is still a taluk of this district, and Sakrepatna, the seat of the chief in the dowry story, is in it.
And look at the spelling. That same page writes Chickmagalur in the sentence about Kadur and Chikkamagaluru in the sentence immediately after it. Two forms of the name, on one government page, in adjacent lines. We have seen this in Shivamogga too, where a district site managed three spellings in a paragraph. It is not carelessness so much as what happens when a name is changing while the page is being written.

One published account notes something anybody from here will recognise. Chikkamagaluru is more often than not mispronounced as Chikka-Mangaluru, which would mean little Mangalore, and Mangalore is about a hundred and fifty kilometres away and a different place entirely. The name is also written Chikmagalur, Chickmagalur and Chikmagalore in various sources.

Not Every Case in Chikkamagaluru Needs a Gazette
A name error in a birth certificate is corrected by the Registrar of Births and Deaths at the body that registered the birth, under section 15 of the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969.
