Quick Answer

To change your name legally in Godda, you follow three steps. A notarised affidavit, a public notice in one daily local leading newspaper, and a Central Gazette notification with the fee paid on Bharatkosh. Godda separated from Santhal Pargana in May 1983, so papers from before then correctly name Santhal Pargana and Bihar.

A Latitude That Cannot Exist

Two Pages Ranking for This District Place It at 24 Degrees 83 Minutes

Before we write about a district we read what already ranks for it, and this one produced something we have not seen anywhere else. Two district data sites, indiastatdistricts and indiastatdistrictindustry, both state that Godda lies at 24 degrees 83 minutes north. There is no such latitude. A degree has sixty minutes, so the eighty third minute does not exist. What has happened is that somebody took the decimal figure 24.83 degrees, which is correct, and rewrote it in degrees and minutes without converting it. The same impossible number then appears on both sites.

Elsewhere the accounts of this district simply disagree with each other. One says Godda is devoid of any railway track, another says the district is well connected by rail and the nearest station is Godda itself. The creation date is given as 25 May 1983 in the district administration's own material and as 17 May 1983 elsewhere. Godda is called the fifty fifth district of undivided Bihar in one place and the fiftieth in another. Its area appears as 2,110 square kilometres and as 2,266. Its elevation as 77 metres and as 145.

We are not scoring points, and here is why it matters to you. Those pages are written by people who copy rather than check, and a Gazette notification is published permanently in the Government of India's own record with your name in it. Ask whoever you use when this district was created and where its own site says so. If the answer is confident and unsourced, be careful. On this page we tell you where sources disagree and which one we follow, every time.
Central Gazette

The Central Gazette Process for a Name Change in Godda

This is the route accepted everywhere in India and abroad. Here is each step.

Prepare and Notarise the Affidavit

A sworn declaration on non-judicial stamp paper, attested by a Notary Public or First Class Magistrate at Godda itself. It is not made in Delhi.

Publish One Newspaper Notice

One daily local leading newspaper, carrying your father's or husband's name and your full residential address. The original paper goes with the file.

Pay on Bharatkosh and Send the File

Pay through the Non-Tax Receipt Portal, print the receipt, and the complete file goes by post or courier to the Controller of Publications, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054.

Step 1 in Detail

What Your Name Change Affidavit Must Contain

Your old name exactly as printed on your existing documents
Your new name, spelt exactly as you want it recorded forever
Your father's or husband's name, which the guidelines require
Every spelling your name appears in, including any Santali form
The district as printed, whether Santhal Pargana or Godda
Your signature, two witness signatures, and the notary stamp with date
Decide the form once, not later: fix the spacing, the surname spelling and whether initials are expanded, then keep it identical in the affidavit, the newspaper and the application. The department returns files where those three disagree. Our name change affidavit page sets out the full wording.
Step 2 in Detail

One Newspaper, and Your Affidavit Is Made Here

One of the daily local leading newspapers, not two papers
The notice must state your father's or husband's name
It must carry your residential address in full
The original newspaper is forwarded to the department, not a photocopy
The affidavit is sworn before a notary here, not in Delhi
The wording must match the affidavit exactly, letter for letter
Two claims worth correcting: pages ranking for this state tell you to book two newspaper advertisements, one in Hindi and one in English, and that it is mandatory to create the affidavit in Delhi. The Department of Publication's guidelines for change of name for an adult read as one of the daily local leading newspapers, and the affidavit is sworn where you live. Delhi is where the finished file is posted, and nothing more.
Step 3 in Detail

The Fee and How It Is Paid

Rs 1,100 for an adult under the department's published schedule
Rs 3,500 for Indians living abroad
Paid through the Non-Tax Receipt Portal at bharatkosh.gov.in only
The printed receipt is attached to the application
No demand draft, no cash counter, no NEFT or RTGS
Check the current rate before paying, as schedules are revised
The documents must not be older than one year. This is the rule that quietly costs people the most. An affidavit sworn and a notice published, then the file left while life got busy, and a year and a half later both have to be redone and paid for again. If you have papers already prepared, tell us the date on them before anything else.
One Town, and Everything Else a Village

Why Doing This Online Matters Here

Godda is the only town in the district. There are 2,311 villages and one town, which is the headquarters of the district, the sub division and the block all at once. That single fact explains our service better than any argument we could put together. Everything a name change traditionally requires, a notary, a newspaper office, a follow up when something is queried, sits in one place, and almost everybody in this district lives somewhere else.

For a family in Sundarpahari or Boarijor that is not a small inconvenience. It is a day gone, a wage lost, and possibly a second trip when a form comes back. Our answer is that none of it needs to happen. You send photographs on WhatsApp, the affidavit is arranged where you live, the notice is placed for you, and the file travels to Delhi instead of you travelling anywhere at all.

What we actually need from you, and it is not much: clear photographs of your existing documents, the block name, and the year printed on anything old. That is enough for us to tell you which route your case needs and what it will cost, before you commit to anything. The consultation is free and there is no obligation after it.
1855, 1983, 2000

Papers From Before 1983 Correctly Name Santhal Pargana

Godda had been a sub division of Santhal Pargana since 1855, when that district was created out of portions of Bhagalpur and Birbhum after the Santhal rebellion. It stayed one until the old Godda sub division was separated and made a district of its own in May 1983, at which point Santhal Pargana itself was upgraded to a division. Godda was part of the undivided Santhal Pargana district up to the 1981 census. Then in November 2000 the state changed from Bihar to Jharkhand.

So a single family here can hold papers naming Santhal Pargana, Bihar and Godda, and all three are correct for the years they were written. An agent who calls a Santhal Pargana era certificate outdated is not reading it properly. Our page for the district that kept the divisional headquarters is at name change agent in Dumka, and for the neighbouring one separated on the same reorganisation, name change agent in Deoghar.

On the 1983 date we follow the district administration and say 25 May 1983, which is the figure carried on the Government of Jharkhand's own district material, while some accounts give 17 May 1983. On the district's rank we simply cannot reconcile the fifty fifth and the fiftieth district of undivided Bihar, so we do not quote either as settled. None of this changes your file. It changes who you should believe about it.
A Name Recorded in 302 BC

The Oldest Naming in This District Comes From a Greek Traveller

The district administration's history page records that in 302 BC the court of Chandragupta Maurya at Pataliputra was visited by Megasthenes, and that the Greek envoy identified and named the people living in this region as the Maller, or Sauria Paharia. Those names are still in use. The record also notes stone age implements found across Santhal Pargana and the visit of the Chinese pilgrim Hiuen Tsiang to Champa in 645 AD.

We put that on a page about changing names for a reason. A name given by an outsider to a people who did not choose it has lasted two thousand three hundred years, which is longer than most names manage. Naming is something that happens to people at least as often as it is something they do. If you would like a different one, there is a legal process for that, and it takes about six weeks.

The language picture here is worth knowing too: the principal languages of the district recorded in the 2011 census are Hindi at about 65 per cent, Santali at about 21 per cent and Urdu at about 8 per cent. Yet the official language field for places within the district, such as Lalmatia, reads Hindi and Urdu, without Santali. A name spoken in Santali and written into a Devanagari register can arrive in more than one defensible form, and that is transliteration rather than a change of name.
Compare the Two Routes

Jharkhand Gazette or Central Gazette in Godda?

With Bhagalpur on two sides and the Rajmahal coalfield here, this is not close.

Coalfield and central undertaking recordsNot what those offices work fromThe central notification they expect
Passport and going abroadUsually not accepted for visa and attestationThe proof passport offices and embassies look for
Our honest advice for Godda: take the Central Gazette. Bhagalpur district of Bihar sits on this district's north and west, so the state line is an everyday crossing here rather than a distant thing, and the Rajmahal coalfield at Lalmatia means many families hold employment and provident fund records with central undertakings. Jharkhand outlets also reported in July 2025 that name change notifications in the state Gazette had been halted after cases of irregularity. We cannot confirm the state's position today and are not claiming that route is closed now, but the Central Gazette is a separate national route and it is the one we use. The state guide is on our Jharkhand page and the full comparison is in our name change agent in India guide.
Save Your Money

Not Every Case in Godda Needs a Gazette

Many agents sell a Gazette for every case. Here the easy pitches are pointing at Santhal Pargana on a paper from before 1983, pointing at Bihar on anything before November 2000, or pointing at a Santali name written differently in two registers and calling it a defect. None of those is a defect. All were correct when written, and this is a district where published sources cannot agree on its own area, elevation, creation date or rank.

A name error in a birth certificate is corrected by the Registrar at the local body where the birth was registered. Caste, income, residence and domicile certificates are corrected by the issuing authority at the block or circle office. A Gazette is for a full legal name change, after marriage, after divorce, for numerology or by personal choice, and for cases where the same difference repeats across several records. Our name spelling correction page explains the difference.

Send the papers and ask us the plain question: do I actually need this. Sometimes two records differ in a way nobody will ever query, and the honest answer is to leave it alone. We would rather tell you that and keep your trust than take Rs 3,999 for a notification you did not need, especially when getting the papers to us at all may have taken you a trip into Godda town.

Documents Required for a Name Change in Godda

Keep clear copies ready, and check the dates on anything already prepared.

Notarised name change affidavit on stamp paper, which we draft
The original newspaper carrying your notice, not a cutting or copy
Aadhaar, voter ID or passport as identity proof
Address proof showing your village and block
Any paper naming Santhal Pargana or Bihar, with the year on it
Two photographs and the printed Bharatkosh receipt
Two things worth knowing before you send anything: the guidelines state that documents once submitted are not returned to the applicant, in original or photocopy form, so keep your own copies of everything. And the hard copy of the Gazette was discontinued from 1 October 2015, so nobody should be charging you extra for one. You download your notification from egazette.gov.in under the Weekly Gazette, Part IV, and it needs no certification from the department. For central Government staff, the deed follows the format prescribed under the Ministry of Home Affairs memorandum of 12 March 1987.

One Platform, Start to Finish

Your Complete Name Change Journey in Godda, Handled by NameChangeAgent

Most people think the Gazette is the finish line. It is the middle. Here is the whole journey.

NameChangeAgent is a platform built for exactly this one job, done properly. We are based in Delhi and we work with families across Godda district entirely online, from Godda town and Mahagama to Meherma, Boarijor, Pathargama, Sundarpahari, Poraiyahat, Thakurgangti and Lalmatia. You send photographs of what you have on WhatsApp. We read them, tell you honestly which route your case needs, and then carry it through. Your affidavit is made where you live.

What makes a Godda file different is distance and disagreement. There is one town in the whole district and 2,311 villages, so travelling for paperwork is a real cost. And published accounts of this district cannot agree on its area, its elevation, the date it was created or its rank among Bihar's districts, while two sites that rank for it place it at a latitude that does not exist. Meanwhile the pages ranking for this state tell you to book two newspaper advertisements and make your affidavit in Delhi, neither of which is right. We ask before a single word is drafted.

Free Consultation on Your Godda Case

Send your papers on WhatsApp with the block name and the dates. We tell you which period each paper belongs to, which differences are transliteration, and whether you need a Gazette at all. No charge, no obligation, and no journey.

We draft it naming Santhal Pargana, Godda or Bihar exactly as your papers show, recording every spelling including any Santali form, and it is sworn where you live rather than in Delhi.

File Prepared and Sent by Courier

We pay the fee on Bharatkosh, print the receipt, assemble the complete file and send it by courier to the Controller of Publications in Delhi, then follow it through to publication.

Your Gazette Notification Retrieved

Once published we retrieve your notification from egazette.gov.in, Part IV, and send it to you. Nobody should be charging you extra for a hard copy, which was discontinued in 2015.

Every Document Updated Afterwards

Aadhaar, PAN, passport, bank, provident fund and college records. Most agents stop before this stage, and this is the stage that actually matters.

People Also Ask

Name Change in Godda, Frequently Asked Questions

Clear answers to the questions we hear most often.

How do I change my name legally in Godda?
In three steps. A notarised affidavit, a public notice in one daily local leading newspaper, and a Central Gazette notification with the fee paid on Bharatkosh. We handle all three for you, fully online.
When was Godda district created?
In May 1983, when the old Godda sub division was separated from Santhal Pargana, which was itself upgraded to a division. We follow the district administration's date of 25 May 1983. Some accounts give 17 May 1983, and sources also disagree on whether it was the fiftieth or the fifty fifth district of undivided Bihar.
My old paper says Santhal Pargana. Is it still valid?
Yes. Godda had been a sub division of Santhal Pargana since 1855 and remained part of that district until 1983, and it was still shown under undivided Santhal Pargana at the 1981 census. Such a paper needs an explanation in the affidavit rather than a correction at any office.
I live far from Godda town. Do I have to travel?
No. Godda is the only town in the district, with 2,311 villages around it, which is exactly why we work online. Send photographs on WhatsApp, the affidavit is arranged where you live, and the file travels to Delhi rather than you travelling anywhere.
How large is Godda district, and how high?
Sources differ. The area is given as 2,110 square kilometres in one place and 2,266 in another, and the elevation as 77 metres in one and 145 in another. Neither affects your file, and we report both rather than quoting one as settled.
Why do some sites give Godda's latitude as 24 degrees 83 minutes?
Because somebody converted the decimal figure 24.83 degrees into degrees and minutes without doing the arithmetic. There is no eighty third minute in a degree. Two district data sites carry the same impossible number, which is a useful reminder that ranking well and being right are different things.
My name is spelt differently in a Santali record.
That is common here. The 2011 census records Hindi at about 65 per cent, Santali at about 21 per cent and Urdu at about 8 per cent as the principal languages of the district, while the official language field for places within it reads Hindi and Urdu. A name that crossed languages can arrive in two defensible forms, which is transliteration rather than a change of name.
Do I need two newspapers or one?
One. The Department of Publication's guidelines for change of name for an adult state that the change should be advertised in one of the daily local leading newspapers, stating the father's or husband's name with the residential address, and that the original newspaper is forwarded to the department.
Do I have to make my affidavit in Delhi?
No. The affidavit is sworn on stamp paper before a Notary Public or First Class Magistrate where you live, which for you means Godda. Delhi is where the finished file is posted, not where the affidavit is made.
How much does a name change cost in Godda?
The department's published schedule is Rs 1,100 for an adult and Rs 3,500 for Indians living abroad. Rates are revised, so check the current amount on deptpub.gov.in or Bharatkosh before paying. Newspaper and affidavit charges are extra. Our complete service starts at Rs 3,999.

Published sources on this district differ on its area, elevation, creation date and rank, and we set out those differences rather than choosing quietly. Land and tenancy matters in the Santhal Pargana division are governed by their own statutes and authorities. Separate guidelines apply to change of name and gender, and to minors. Fees are set by the Department of Publication and are revised, so confirm the current position before you pay.
