Name Change Agent in Godda

Before we write about a district we read what already ranks for it, and this one produced something we have not seen anywhere else. Two district data sites, indiastatdistricts and indiastatdistrictindustry, both state that Godda lies at 24 degrees 83 minutes north. There is no such latitude. A degree has sixty minutes, so the eighty third minute does not exist. What has happened is that somebody took the decimal figure 24.83 degrees, which is correct, and rewrote it in degrees and minutes without converting it. The same impossible number then appears on both sites.

Elsewhere the accounts of this district simply disagree with each other. One says Godda is devoid of any railway track, another says the district is well connected by rail and the nearest station is Godda itself. The creation date is given as 25 May 1983 in the district administration's own material and as 17 May 1983 elsewhere. Godda is called the fifty fifth district of undivided Bihar in one place and the fiftieth in another. Its area appears as 2,110 square kilometres and as 2,266. Its elevation as 77 metres and as 145.

Godda is the only town in the district. There are 2,311 villages and one town, which is the headquarters of the district, the sub division and the block all at once. That single fact explains our service better than any argument we could put together. Everything a name change traditionally requires, a notary, a newspaper office, a follow up when something is queried, sits in one place, and almost everybody in this district lives somewhere else.

For a family in Sundarpahari or Boarijor that is not a small inconvenience. It is a day gone, a wage lost, and possibly a second trip when a form comes back. The district administration's history page records that in 302 BC the court of Chandragupta Maurya at Pataliputra was visited by Megasthenes, and that the Greek envoy identified and named the people living in this region as the Maller, or Sauria Paharia. Those names are still in use. The record also notes stone age implements found across Santhal Pargana and the visit of the Chinese pilgrim Hiuen Tsiang to Champa in 645 AD.

A name given by an outsider to a people who did not choose it has lasted two thousand three hundred years, which is longer than most names manage. Naming is something that happens to people at least as often as it is something they do. If you would like a different one, there is a legal process for that, and it takes about six weeks.

A name error in a birth certificate is corrected by the Registrar at the local body where the birth was registered. Caste, income, residence and domicile certificates are corrected by the issuing authority at the block or circle office.
