The rest of Himachal calls itself Dev Bhoomi. Hamirpur is called Veer Bhoomi, and the reason is simple. The Army is the largest employer of people from this district. Families here fill the Dogra Regiment, the Jammu and Kashmir Rifles, the Grenadiers, the Rajput Regiment, Hodson's Horse and Scinde Horse, and thousands more serve in the Air Force, the Navy and the paramilitary forces. The Army holds an open recruitment rally under the Hamirpur recruitment office every year and thousands of young people turn up for it.

That changes what a name change file looks like here. For most people a Gazette notification plus an Aadhaar update finishes the job. For a serving soldier, an ex serviceman or a pension holding widow, the name also sits in a service book, in a Part II order, in a discharge book and in a pension payment order held by a record office and by the pension disbursing authority. Those are separate records with their own procedures, and they do not update themselves when the Gazette appears. The district administration's own history sets out a sequence that almost nobody else repeats. After Kangra was annexed in 1846, Nadaun was made the tehsil headquarters. That settlement was revised in 1868 and the headquarters moved from Nadaun to Hamirpur. In 1888 Palampur tehsil was created out of parts of the Hamirpur and Kangra tehsils. Hamirpur then stayed in the Punjab province until 1 November 1966, came into Himachal Pradesh with the rest of the hill areas, and was created as a separate district on 1 September 1972 with only two tehsils, Hamirpur and Barsar. Three more sub tehsils, Tira Sujanpur, Nadaun and Bhoranj, were created in 1980.

Read that as document dates rather than as history. A paper from between 1846 and 1868 names Nadaun as the tehsil. A paper from after 1888 from the northern edge may name Palampur. Anything before November 1966 names Punjab. Anything between 1966 and 1972 names Kangra district. Only after September 1972 does Hamirpur appear as a district at all, and Nadaun reappears as a sub tehsil only from 1980. Six different correct answers depending on the year, for families who have farmed the same land throughout.

Hamirpur takes its name from Raja Hamir Chand of the Katoch line, who ruled from about 1700 to 1740 and built the fort that the modern town grew around. The bigger name in this district's history is his descendant, Maharaja Sansar Chand, who ruled from 1775 to 1823 and chose Sujanpur Tira as the capital of his principality, building palaces and temples there. Nadaun was the seat of a jagir granted to his son, and the remains of forts and palaces at both places are still standing.

The point worth holding on to is the inversion. The seat of the Kangra rulers was at Sujanpur Tira, which today sits in Hamirpur district, not in Kangra district. So a very old family paper can name Kangra as the state or the kingdom while the actual place named on it is inside modern Hamirpur, and a verifier reading it will think the two do not go together.
