To change your name legally in Khunti, you follow three steps. A notarised affidavit, a public notice in one daily local leading newspaper, and a Central Gazette notification with the fee paid on Bharatkosh. Khunti became a district on 12 September 2007, so papers from before that date correctly name Ranchi.
Under Munda Custom, the Day You Were Born Gave You Your Name
Bhagwan Birsa Munda was born at Ulihatu, in what is now Khunti district, on a Thursday, and was named after that day according to the then prevalent Munda custom. That is the fact we want to put at the top of a page about changing names, because it says something no argument of ours could say as well. Under that custom your name was not chosen for you by anybody who had thought about who you might turn out to be. It was decided by which day of the week you happened to arrive on.
Most people who write to us feel something close to that about their own name, whatever tradition it came from. It was given before anybody knew them, sometimes for reasons nobody now remembers, and they have carried it since. Wanting a different one is not disloyalty and it is not vanity. It is an ordinary thing, and there is an ordinary legal process for it, which is a sworn affidavit, a notice in one newspaper and a published notification.

The State's Birthday Is a Birthday From This District
Every page we write mentions 15 November 2000, because that is the day Jharkhand came into being and the day everything issued before it correctly names Bihar. What we have not said until now is where that date comes from. Bhagwan Birsa Munda was born on 15 November 1875 at Ulihatu, a village in the Arki block of what is now Khunti district. The state took his birthday for its own.
It is worth sitting with that for a moment on a page about names. A state of thirty million people chose the date of its own existence in order to carry a man's name forward. That is what a name is for. It outlasts the person and it points back at them, and keeping it accurate in a public record is not paperwork for its own sake. This district also gave the state Dombari Buru, the hill where the Ulgulan was led, and Khunti holds that history as its own.
Even Ulihatu's Official Language Field Does Not Say Mundari
Khunti town's official languages are listed as Hindi, Nagpuri and Mundari. Now look at the entries for the places inside the district. Khunti block, Karra block and the village of Ulihatu each carry an official language field reading Hindi and Urdu. Ulihatu is Birsa Munda's birthplace and sits in the heart of Munda country, and the field for it does not name Mundari at all.
We are not saying anybody did anything wrong. We are saying that the language a family speaks at home and the language field attached to their village in a record are two different things, and a personal name has to cross from one into the other. A Mundari or Oraon name written down by a clerk in Devanagari, and typed years later into an English database, can come out in two or three forms that are all defensible. That is transliteration. It is not a change of name, and it may not need a Gazette notification at all.
Where the Name Khunti Is Said to Come From
A local account holds that Maharaja Madra Munda of Chhotanagpur had a son, Setea, who had eight sons, and that the eldest of those went south of Ranchi, established a khuntkatti village and named it Khunti. Khuntkatti is the Munda system of village land held by the descendants of its original clearers, and this district remains its heartland. So the town's name comes from a form of land tenure, given by the man who founded the settlement.
Khunti was made a sub division of Ranchi district in 1905 and became the twenty third district of Jharkhand on 12 September 2007, carved from Ranchi's territory, on the same day that Ramgarh was carved out of Hazaribagh. It is the second least populous district in the state after Lohardaga. Our pages for those two are at name change agent in Ranchi and name change agent in Ramgarh.

Not Every Case in Khunti Needs a Gazette
Many agents sell a Gazette for every case. Here the easy pitches are pointing at Ranchi on a paper from before September 2007, pointing at Bihar on anything before November 2000, or pointing at a Mundari or Oraon name written differently in two registers and calling it a defect. None of those is a defect. All were correct when written, and a transliteration is not a change of name.
A name error in a birth certificate is corrected by the Registrar at the local body where the birth was registered. Caste, income, residence and domicile certificates are corrected by the issuing authority at the block or circle office. A Gazette is for a full legal name change, after marriage, after divorce, for numerology or by personal choice, and for cases where the same difference repeats across several records. Our name spelling correction page explains the difference.

Your Complete Name Change Journey in Khunti, Handled by NameChangeAgent
Most people think the Gazette is the finish line. It is the middle. Here is the whole journey.
NameChangeAgent is a platform built for exactly this one job, done properly. We are based in Delhi and we work with families across Khunti district entirely online, from Khunti town and Torpa to Murhu, Karra, Rania, Arki, Ulihatu and the villages around Dombari Buru. You send photographs of what you have on WhatsApp. We read them, tell you honestly which route your case needs, and then carry it through. Your affidavit is made where you live.
What makes a Khunti file different is that the district is young and the records are old. Khunti became a district only in September 2007, so almost everything a family holds from before then names Ranchi, and anything before November 2000 names Bihar. Mundari and Nagpuri names sit in Devanagari registers written by many hands. Meanwhile the pages ranking for this state tell you to book two newspaper advertisements and make your affidavit in Delhi, neither of which is right, and both of which cost you more. We ask before a single word is drafted.

We pay the fee on Bharatkosh, print the receipt, assemble the complete file and send it by courier to the Controller of Publications in Delhi, then follow it through to publication.
Your Gazette Notification Retrieved
Once published we retrieve your notification from egazette.gov.in, Part IV, and send it to you. Nobody should be charging you extra for a hard copy, which was discontinued in 2015.

This page explains a documentation process and is not legal advice on your individual case. The historical material about Bhagwan Birsa Munda is included with respect and drawn from published sources, which themselves differ on his date and place of birth, and we set out that difference rather than choosing quietly. Land in this scheduled area, including khuntkatti holdings, is governed by its own statutes and authorities and needs advice specific to your record. Separate guidelines apply to change of name and gender, and to minors. Fees are set by the Department of Publication and are revised, so confirm the current position before you pay. For a contested matter, or anything before a court, you need a lawyer engaged for you specifically.
