Quick Answer

To change your name legally in Koppal, you follow three steps. A notarised affidavit sworn here with two witnesses, public notices in two newspapers, one local and one national, and a Central Gazette notification with the fee paid on Bharatkosh. The adult fee is Rs 1,100, and if you carry an alias name there is Rs 250 more for each one.

The Line Almost Nobody Quotes You

If You Have an Alias Name, That Costs Rs 250 More Each

Here is the fee schedule as we actually file it, after years of doing this work. Rs 1,100 for an adult. Rs 1,700 for a minor. Rs 1,350 for a public notice. And Rs 250 extra for every alias name carried on the application. That last line is the one you will almost never see quoted anywhere, and it is the one that catches people out, because plenty of families here carry a second name that appears on some documents and not others.

If your papers show one name at school, a shortened or house name in a land record, and something slightly different again on a bank passbook, tell us at the start. It may be an alias that belongs on the application, and if so it changes the fee before you pay rather than after. It is a small amount. Being told about it up front is what tells you whether the person quoting you has actually filed one of these.

Everything on that list is a Government charge, and separate from anybody's service fee. Payment goes through the Non-Tax Receipt Portal at bharatkosh.gov.in, in your own name, and the receipt comes to you. Stamp duty on the affidavit is Rs 20 under the Karnataka Stamp Act, 1957. Newspaper charges depend on the two papers and are billed at cost. Ask any quote to split those three things out for you, because a single lump figure hides which part is yours to check.
Brahmi, Kavirajamarga, Kopana Nagara

Names Have Been Written Down in This District for Twenty Three Centuries

Two of Emperor Ashoka's minor rock edicts sit in this district, at Palkigundu and at Gavimath near Koppal town, cut into boulders in the Brahmi script around twenty three hundred years ago. Then the district administration's own history page records that the name Koppal appears in the poet Kavirajamarga's work during King Nrupathunga's time, between 814 and 878 AD, as Viditha Maha Kopana Nagara. And older still, Kopana is listed among the southern provinces in the Mahabharata.

Kopana, Kopana Nagara, Koppal. One place, written three ways across more than two thousand years, and nobody treats the earlier forms as mistakes. They are simply what it was called when each was written. Your own name across four documents from four decades is the same thing at a much smaller scale, and it deserves the same reading.

Which is what an affidavit is for. Not to declare that one version of your name was always the right one, but to record every form that appears, on the document it appears on, with its date. That is why we ask for photographs of the papers rather than for you to type your name out. The typed version is always the one you believe is correct, which is usually the newest.
Anegundi and Hampi

One Empire's Two Capitals Now Sit in Two Different Districts

The district administration's history page states it plainly. Anegundi, in Gangavathi taluk of this district, was the first capital of the Vijayanagara dynasty, and the old palace and fort still stand there. The capital later moved across the Tungabhadra to Hampi. And Hampi today is in Vijayanagara district, which was carved out of Ballari only in 2021.

So one empire's first capital is in Koppal and its famous one is in a district that is four years old. The river did not move and neither did the ruins. The lines drawn around them did. That is the ordinary condition of administrative geography here, and it is why a paper naming one district for an address in another is so often correct rather than wrong. Our page on the 2021 split is at Ballari.

And this district's own founding date is written two ways. The district administration's site and the district court's site both say Koppal remained part of Raichur district until 1 April 1998. Some other accounts give 1997. If the founding date of a district can be published two ways by careful people, a one letter difference between your certificate and your Aadhaar is not the scandal an office sometimes makes it sound.
Central Gazette

The Central Gazette Process for a Name Change in Koppal

This is the route accepted everywhere in India and abroad. Here is each step.

Prepare and Notarise the Affidavit Here

A sworn declaration on non-judicial stamp paper with two ordinary witnesses, attested by a Notary Public or First Class Magistrate in Koppal. Never self attested.

Publish in Two Newspapers

One local paper and one national, both carrying your father's or husband's name and your full residential address. The originals go with the file.

Pay on Bharatkosh and Send the File

Pay through the Non-Tax Receipt Portal, print the receipt, and the complete file goes by post or courier to the Controller of Publications, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054.

Step 1 in Detail

What Your Affidavit Must Actually Contain

Your old name exactly as printed on your existing documents
Your new name, spelt exactly as you want it recorded forever
Every alias name you carry, because each one affects the fee
Your father's or husband's name, which the guidelines require
Stamp duty of Rs 20 under the Karnataka Stamp Act, 1957
Your signature, two witness signatures, and the notary stamp with date
The affidavit is notarised, never self attested. Some pages tell readers that no third party attestation is needed and that you may attest your own documents. Self attestation applies to photocopies of supporting papers. The affidavit itself is a sworn statement and it is attested by a Notary Public or a First Class Magistrate, with two ordinary adult witnesses signing alongside you. Our name change affidavit page sets out the full wording.
Step 2 in Detail

Both Notices Must Match the Affidavit Word for Word

One local newspaper and one national newspaper
Both stating your father's or husband's name and full address
Wording identical to the affidavit, including every alias
The original papers are forwarded, not photocopies or cuttings
Rates differ widely between papers, so ask before booking
Keep your own copies, since submitted papers are not returned
The single most common reason a file comes back is a mismatch between the affidavit and the advertisement. A middle name dropped, an initial expanded, an alias printed in one and not the other. It costs nothing to get right at the drafting stage and it costs weeks to fix afterwards, because both the affidavit and the notices have to be redone. We word all three documents from one source so they cannot drift apart.
Step 3 in Detail

Bharatkosh Only, and Nothing Older Than a Year

Paid through the Non-Tax Receipt Portal at bharatkosh.gov.in only
Payment moved to that portal from 1 October 2018
NEFT and RTGS were stopped from 18 March 2019
No demand draft, and no compact disc
Documents must not be older than one year
Rs 3,500 schedule for Indians living abroad
The one year rule is the most expensive thing on this page. An affidavit sworn and notices published, then the file set aside while the harvest or a wedding took over, and eighteen months later all of it has to be redone and paid for again. If you already have papers prepared, tell us the date on them before anything else happens. And the hard copy of the Gazette was discontinued from 1 October 2015, so nobody should be charging you for one. You download it from egazette.gov.in.

Not Every Case in Koppal Needs a Gazette

A name error in a birth certificate is corrected by the Registrar of Births and Deaths at the body that registered the birth, under section 15 of the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969. You apply to that Registrar with the supporting documents. No Gazette and no newspaper advertisement are involved. An SSLC or PUC marks card is corrected by the board that issued it. Caste, income and residence certificates are corrected by the issuing authority.

A Gazette is for a full legal name change, after marriage, after divorce, for numerology or by personal choice, and for cases where the same difference repeats across enough records that fixing them one at a time costs more than publishing once. If one paper names Raichur district and another names Koppal, that is not a case at all. Our name spelling correction page sets out the difference in full.

Send photographs and ask us the plain question, do I actually need this. A good share of the people who write to us do not, and we say so and they pay us nothing. That is not generosity. Between the Gazette fee, any alias charges, two newspaper advertisements and an affidavit, a case somebody did not need is a real amount of money in a district where it is not easily spared.
Compare the Two Routes

Karnataka State e-Gazette or Central Gazette in Koppal?

A Kalyana-Karnataka district whose papers can name three different governments.

PointKarnataka State e-GazetteCentral Gazette of India

Papers naming a taluk that only appeared in 2018Explained againCovered by the same notification

Bank, PAN and provident fundNot what those systems work fromThe central notification they expect
Where you download the copyThe state e-Gazette portalegazette.gov.in, Weekly Gazette, Part IV
Our honest advice for Koppal: take the Central Gazette. This district's papers can name Hyderabad State, then Mysore State, then Karnataka, then Raichur district, then Koppal, and for four taluks a name that only exists since 2018. One national published proof carries all of that at once. If your case is purely a Karnataka board record, a state service file or an Article 371J matter, say so and we will tell you the state route is enough. The state comparison is on our Karnataka page, the neighbouring district page is Raichur, and the national guide is at name change agent in India.
2018

Four of This District's Taluks Are Only Seven Years Old

The district administration's own page records the sequence. Koppal began with four taluks, Koppal, Gangavathi, Kushtagi and Yelburga. Then Kukanoor was formed on 18 January 2018, and Kanakagiri and Karatagi on 19 January 2018. Three new taluks in two days, taking the district to seven. That change is seven years old, which is younger than a school certificate and very much younger than any land record.

So if you live in Kanakagiri, Karatagi or Kukanoor, your older papers name Koppal, Gangavathi, Kushtagi or Yelburga taluk instead. Nothing is wrong with them. They record the taluk that existed on the day they were issued. We name it exactly as your document does, with the year, so a clerk reading the affidavit can follow the change instead of querying it.

And before 1956 the papers say something else entirely. Koppal was under the Nizam of Hyderabad, and the district's own history page records that the Hyderabad-Karnataka region was freed from the Nizam in September 1948, with the area then becoming part of Mysore State on the reorganisation of states and Karnataka from 1973. In 2019 the region itself was renamed from Hyderabad-Karnataka to Kalyana-Karnataka. A family here can hold entirely valid papers naming five different administrative realities.
Get Ready

Documents Required for a Name Change in Koppal

Keep clear copies ready, and check the dates on anything already prepared.

Notarised name change affidavit on stamp paper, which we draft
Both original newspapers carrying your notice, local and national
Aadhaar, voter ID or passport as identity proof
Address proof showing your taluk, with a 583 series pin code
Any paper naming Hyderabad State, Raichur district or an alias name
Two photographs, two witnesses, and the printed Bharatkosh receipt
One thing worth knowing before you send anything: the guidelines state that documents once submitted are not returned to the applicant, in original or photocopy form, so keep your own copies of everything, and that matters here because a pre-1956 Hyderabad State record is often the only paper a family has from that period. You download your notification from egazette.gov.in under the Weekly Gazette, Part IV. For central Government staff, the deed follows the format prescribed under the Ministry of Home Affairs memorandum of 12 March 1987.

Three separate things make up your total, and a good quote separates them. The Government fees above, paid on Bharatkosh in your own name with the receipt coming to you. The two newspaper advertisements, whose rates vary a great deal between publications and which we bill at cost after telling you the rate. And our service fee, which is stated and does not move. If a quote gives you one number and will not break it down, you cannot check any part of it, and the alias line is exactly the sort of thing that disappears inside a lump sum.
One Platform, Start to Finish

Your Complete Name Change Journey in Koppal, Handled by NameChangeAgent

Most people think the Gazette is the finish line. It is the middle. Here is the whole journey.

NameChangeAgent is a platform built for exactly this one job, done properly. We are based in Delhi and we work with people across Koppal district entirely online, from Koppal town and Gangavathi to Kushtagi, Yelburga, Kanakagiri, Karatagi, Kukanoor, Anegundi and the villages around them. You send photographs of what you have on WhatsApp. We read them, tell you honestly which route your case needs, and then carry it through. Your affidavit is notarised here, with two ordinary witnesses.

What makes a Koppal file different is how many layers sit under one address. Papers can name Hyderabad State, Mysore State, Karnataka, Raichur district or Koppal, and four taluks here only exist since January 2018. Add an alias name, which many families carry, and the fee changes before you file. We ask about all of it before a single word is drafted, because every one of those is cheaper to handle at the start than to explain at a counter later.

Free Consultation on Your Koppal Case

Send your papers on WhatsApp with the taluk, the years and any alias name, exactly as printed. We tell you whether your difference is a correction or a change, whether the state or Central route fits, and whether you need a Gazette at all. No charge and no obligation.

Name Change in Koppal, Frequently Asked Questions

Clear answers to the questions we hear most often.

How do I change my name legally in Koppal?
In three steps. A notarised affidavit sworn here with two witnesses, public notices in two newspapers, one local and one national, and a Central Gazette notification with the fee paid on Bharatkosh. We handle all three for you, fully online.
What are the actual Government fees?
Rs 1,100 for an adult, Rs 1,700 for a minor, Rs 1,350 for a public notice, and Rs 250 extra for each alias name carried on the application. Indians living abroad pay Rs 3,500. Stamp duty on the affidavit is Rs 20 under the Karnataka Stamp Act, 1957. Newspaper charges are separate and depend on the two papers.
What counts as an alias name?
A second name you are also known by, which appears on some of your documents and not others. It might be a house name, a shortened form, or a name used at school but not at the bank. Each alias carried on the application adds Rs 250 to the Government fee, so tell us at the start rather than after the quote is fixed.
How many newspapers do I need?
Two. One local paper and one national, both stating your father's or husband's name along with your full residential address, and both originals are forwarded with the file. The wording in both must match the affidavit exactly, including any alias.
My old paper names Raichur district.
That is correct for its year. The district administration's own site and the district court's site both record that Koppal remained part of Raichur district until 1 April 1998, when this district was carved out. A record from before that date naming Raichur is old rather than wrong.
My papers name a taluk that is not mine.
Very likely correct too. Koppal began with four taluks, Koppal, Gangavathi, Kushtagi and Yelburga. Kukanoor was formed on 18 January 2018 and Kanakagiri and Karatagi on 19 January 2018. If you live in one of those three, older papers name whichever taluk you were in before.
My old paper names Hyderabad State.
That is correct too. Koppal was under the Nizam of Hyderabad before independence, and the district's own history page records that the Hyderabad-Karnataka region was freed from the Nizam in September 1948. The area then became part of Mysore State, renamed Karnataka in 1973, and the region was renamed Kalyana-Karnataka in 2019.
Can I pay by demand draft?
No. Payment moved to the Non-Tax Receipt Portal at bharatkosh.gov.in from 1 October 2018, and NEFT and RTGS were stopped from 18 March 2019. Pages still asking for a demand draft have the instrument out of date. No compact disc is required either.
Does a birth certificate spelling need a Gazette?
No. You apply to the Registrar of Births and Deaths at the body that registered the birth, under section 15 of the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969, with the supporting documents. An SSLC or PUC marks card is corrected by the board that issued it. Neither needs a Gazette or a newspaper advertisement.
How long does it take?
Four to six weeks for the Central Gazette. The affidavit is ready in one to two days and both notices go in within a week. The rule that costs people most is that documents must not be older than one year, so papers prepared and then left for eighteen months have to be redone and paid for again.

The fee lines above, including the additional charge for each alias name, reflect the schedule as we file it in practice; fees are set by the Government and are revised, so confirm the current position before you pay. The historical material is included only to explain why papers from this district name different states, districts and taluks, and where published sources differ, as they do on this district's founding date, we set out the difference rather than choosing quietly. Stamp duty rates are set by statute and are amended from time to time. Birth certificate, marks card, caste, income and residence certificate corrections follow the issuing authority's own procedure.
