Mysore State was renamed Karnataka in 1973. Koppal district was separated from Raichur on 25 August 1997. And in 2019 the region itself was renamed from Hyderabad-Karnataka to Kalyana-Karnataka.
Six changes, and the house never moved an inch. Koppal district came into existence on 25 August 1997, bifurcated from Raichur district. On the same day, at the other end of the state, Udupi district was formed out of Dakshina Kannada. And ten days earlier, on 15 August 1997, Davanagere district was created out of Chitradurga, Shimoga and Bellary. Three new districts in eleven days, in three completely different corners of Karnataka.
This matters to you for one plain reason. If your family papers predate 1997 and your address is now in Koppal, they correctly name Raichur district. If a relative married into a family near Gangavathi or Kushtagi, their papers may say Raichur where yours say Koppal, for land that is a short drive apart. Nobody made a mistake. Two Languages Claim the Meaning of This City's Name
In Kannada the name is read as Rayachooru, from raya meaning king and ooru meaning place or town, so the king's place. Another account traces it to Telugu, from rai meaning stone and ooru meaning town, giving a stone town, which suits a city built around a fort whose inscriptions date its construction to 1294. Both readings are published, and neither has driven the other out.
And the district's own history page adds something we have not seen anywhere else in this state. It records that many of the villagers round about still call the place by the earlier form of the name, which is Rayachooru. Not called it once. Still call it. The older name has not become history here, it is what people say, while the newer form is what gets printed.
Not Every Case in Raichur Needs a Gazette
A name error in a birth certificate is corrected by the Registrar of Births and Deaths at the body that registered the birth, under section 15 of the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969.
