To change your name legally in Pakur, you follow three steps. A notarised affidavit, a public notice in one daily local leading newspaper, and a Central Gazette notification with the fee paid on Bharatkosh. Pakur became a district on 28 January 1994, so older papers here correctly name Sahibganj or Santhal Pargana.
Even the Names of the Hul's Leaders Are Written Two Ways Officially
This is the plainest thing we can show you and we would rather show it than argue it. The Sahibganj district administration's history page names the leaders of the Santhal Hul as Sido and Kanu. The Pakur district administration's history page, describing the same events in the same division, names them Siddhu and Kanhu. Both are Government of Jharkhand websites. Both are writing about the men whose rebellion led directly to the creation of Santhal Pargana in 1855.
And it happens again with the people of these hills. The Godda district administration records the early inhabitants identified by Megasthenes as the Maller. The Pakur district administration writes Maler, with one L, and adds a third name by identifying them with the Malli of Chandragupta Maurya's time. Three forms for one people, two forms for two national figures, all on official pages, all this year.

The Fee and How It Is Paid
Santhal Pargana Was Named Perhaps to Appease the Santhals
The Pakur district administration's own history page is unusually frank about this. It records that ten thousand Santhals assembled and that Pakur and Maheshpur were sacked during the rebellion, that the British suppressed it, and that the extraordinary courage shown left its impression on them. Then it says that the government realised the Santhals had to be kept in good humour if it wanted to rule this area, that a separate district was created by Act XXXVII of 1855, and that it was given the name of Santhal Pargana, perhaps to appease the Santhals.
A district named as a political act, to settle something a name alone could partly settle. We would not have written that sentence ourselves and we do not need to. It is on the government's page, and it makes a point we make on every one of these pages in weaker words. Names carry weight. They are given for reasons, sometimes reasons that have nothing to do with the people carrying them, and they last a very long time afterwards.
For Eleven Years Pakur Was Tagged With Sahibganj
The chain here is longer than in most districts and the phrasing used for it is worth quoting. Pakur was a sub division of Santhal Pargana district from 1868. When Santhal Pargana was divided into four districts, Dumka, Deoghar, Godda and Sahibganj, Pakur was tagged with Sahibganj, and it remained a sub division of Sahibganj until it was upgraded to a district on 28 January 1994, under a notification of the state government of Bihar. Then in November 2000 the state itself became Jharkhand.
So papers issued here can name Santhal Pargana before 1983, Sahibganj between 1983 and January 1994, Pakur after that, and Bihar for anything before November 2000. Four correct answers for one house, and the middle one is a district your family may never have thought of as theirs. Our pages for the two parent districts are at Dumka, which kept the divisional headquarters, and Godda, separated in the same 1983 reorganisation.
Nobody Agrees on How Big This District Is
Open Wikipedia's article on Pakur district. The information box on the right states the total area as 1,805.59 square kilometres. The first paragraph of the same article states that the district covers 686.21 square kilometres. Those two numbers are on the same page and one is more than two and a half times the other. Elsewhere the figure appears as 696.21, which differs from 686.21 by a single transposed digit.
The borders wander too. Wikipedia says the district is bounded on the east by both Birbhum and Murshidabad districts of West Bengal, while other accounts name only Murshidabad. We are not going to resolve any of this and it makes no difference to your file. We set it out because the same habit that produces these numbers produces the confident, unsourced answers you will get from somebody selling you a name change.
Jharkhand Gazette or Central Gazette in Pakur?
With West Bengal along the entire eastern edge and stone going to Bangladesh, this is not close.

Not Every Case in Pakur Needs a Gazette
Many agents sell a Gazette for every case. Here the easy pitches are pointing at Sahibganj on a paper from before 1994, pointing at Santhal Pargana on anything older, pointing at Bihar on anything before November 2000, or pointing at a Santali or Bengali spelling and calling it a defect. None of those is a defect. All were correct when written, and this is a district where two government sites cannot agree on how to spell the names of the men the state honours.
A name error in a birth certificate is corrected by the Registrar at the local body where the birth was registered. Caste, income, residence and domicile certificates are corrected by the issuing authority at the block or circle office. A Gazette is for a full legal name change, after marriage, after divorce, for numerology or by personal choice, and for cases where the same difference repeats across several records. Our name spelling correction page explains the difference.

Your Complete Name Change Journey in Pakur, Handled by NameChangeAgent
Most people think the Gazette is the finish line. It is the middle. Here is the whole journey.
NameChangeAgent is a platform built for exactly this one job, done properly. We are based in Delhi and we work with families across Pakur district entirely online, from Pakur town and Maheshpur to Hiranpur, Littipara, Amrapara, Pakuria and the stone belt around them. You send photographs of what you have on WhatsApp. We read them, tell you honestly which route your case needs, and then carry it through. Your affidavit is made where you live.
What makes a Pakur file different is how many names one address has carried. Santhal Pargana from 1868, Sahibganj from 1983, Pakur from January 1994, and Bihar until November 2000. Names here also reach records through Santali and Bengali before they reach Devanagari, with West Bengal along the whole eastern edge. Meanwhile the pages ranking for this state tell you to book two newspaper advertisements and make your affidavit in Delhi, neither of which is right. We ask before a single word is drafted.

This page explains a documentation process and is not legal advice on your individual case. The historical material is drawn from the district administrations' own published accounts and is included with respect for the events it describes. Where sources differ, including on spellings and on this district's area, we set out the difference rather than choosing quietly. Land and tenancy in the Santhal Pargana division are governed by their own statutes and authorities. Separate guidelines apply to change of name and gender, and to minors. Fees are set by the Department of Publication and are revised, so confirm the current position before you pay. For a contested matter, or anything before a court, you need a lawyer engaged for you specifically.
