To change your name legally in Sahibganj, you follow three steps. A notarised affidavit, a public notice in one daily local leading newspaper, and a Central Gazette notification with the fee paid on Bharatkosh. Sahibganj became a district on 17 May 1983, so papers from before then correctly name Santhal Pargana and Bihar.
Sahibganj Was Kajrotia, and the New Name Means the Masters' Market
This is recorded plainly and we are simply going to set it out. The town was originally named Kajrotia. It is now Sahibganj, and the name is built from two words, sahib and ganj, meaning a place or market of the masters. The reason usually given is that a number of English and other European people lived and worked in and around the railway station during the British period, and the name attached itself and stayed.
We are not making a political point and we are not suggesting anything should change. What we are saying is that this district already knows something most people have to be told. A name can be given from outside, for reasons that have nothing to do with the people who then carry it, and it can outlast every one of those reasons by generations. The relationship the word describes ended nearly eighty years ago. The word did not.

Even the Names of Sido and Kanhu Are Not Written the Same Way Twice
Bhognadih, in the Barhait block of this district, is the birthplace of the brothers who led the Santhal Hul, the rebellion that led directly to the creation of Santhal Pargana in 1855. Now look at how their names are written. The Sahibganj district administration's history page calls them Sido and Kanu. The Sahibganj civil court's own history page calls them Siddho and Kanho. Those are two arms of the same district. The Pakur district administration, next door, writes Siddhu and Kanhu.
The same happens with the people of these hills. This district's page records them as Malers, or Mal Paharia, and identifies them with the Malli mentioned by Megasthenes in 302 BC. The court's page adds Sauria Pahadia and Maisa Pahadia. Godda writes Maller with two Ls. Between four official pages there are seven written forms for two peoples and two brothers.
Three Accounts of How This District Was Created
The date is agreed. 17 May is the foundation day of the district. What was carved out to make it is not agreed. The district administration states that the Rajmahal and Pakur subdivisions of the old Santhal Pargana district were carved out on 17 May 1983 to form Sahibganj district. Wikipedia says that in 1983 the Deoghar, Sahibganj and Godda subdivisions were given district status. The Sahibganj civil court's history page says the district was separated from Dumka district in 1983.
The first of those matches what we found writing about the district next door, where the Government of India's own industrial profile records that Pakur was tagged with Sahibganj in 1983 and stayed a sub division of it until 1994. So a paper issued in Pakur between 1983 and 1994 names Sahibganj, and a paper issued anywhere here before 1983 names Santhal Pargana, and anything before 15 November 2000 names Bihar. Our page for that district is at name change agent in Pakur, and for the one that kept the divisional headquarters, name change agent in Dumka.
Five Official Languages, and the Ganga on One Side
The official languages listed for Sahibganj town are Hindi, Urdu, Khortha, Bengali and Santali. Five, in one town. And the geography explains it. This is the only district in Jharkhand through which the Ganga flows, with the river on the north, the Rajmahal hills on the south, West Bengal to the east and Bihar to the west. Teliagarhi was the main gateway for armies marching to and from Bengal from the thirteenth century onwards, and Rajmahal was made the capital of Bengal by Man Singh in 1592 before the capital moved to Dacca in 1608.
Every one of those crossings left names behind in the records. A name spoken in Santali, written into a register in Bengali or Urdu script, and typed decades later into an English database can come out in two or three defensible forms. That is transliteration, not a change of name, and knowing which one you have decides whether you need a Gazette notification at all or something much smaller.
The District's Own Name Is Written Both Ways
Wikipedia's article on the town is titled Sahebganj, its information box says Sahibganj, and its opening line gives both along with the older name Kajrotia. The district administration writes Sahibganj throughout. Both forms appear in ordinary use and neither is wrong. The blocks do it too, appearing as Barhait in one official list and Barhet in another, and as Pathna in one and Pathana in another.
There is also a small figure worth watching for. One account describes this as a district of 4.25 square kilometres. That is the area of Sahibganj town, not of the district, which is very much larger. It is an easy slip to make when copying a figure out of an information box, and it is the same slip that turns a correct name on one document into a wrong one on the next.
Jharkhand Gazette or Central Gazette in Sahibganj?
With Bihar on one side, West Bengal on the other and a national waterway through the middle, this is not close.

Not Every Case in Sahibganj Needs a Gazette
Many agents sell a Gazette for every case. Here the easy pitches are pointing at Santhal Pargana on a paper from before 1983, pointing at Bihar on anything before November 2000, or pointing at a name written from Santali, Bengali or Urdu and calling it a defect. None of those is a defect. All were correct when written, and this is a district where four official pages between them produce seven spellings for two peoples and two brothers.
A name error in a birth certificate is corrected by the Registrar at the local body where the birth was registered. Caste, income, residence and domicile certificates are corrected by the issuing authority at the block or circle office. A Gazette is for a full legal name change, after marriage, after divorce, for numerology or by personal choice, and for cases where the same difference repeats across several records. Our name spelling correction page explains the difference.

What makes a Sahibganj file different is how many languages and how many crossings a name here has been through. Five official languages in the town, the Ganga on one side, West Bengal on the other, Bihar on the third, and eight centuries of armies, capitals and traders passing through Teliagarhi and Rajmahal. Add papers naming Santhal Pargana before 1983 and Bihar before November 2000. Meanwhile the pages ranking for this state tell you to book two newspaper advertisements and make your affidavit in Delhi, neither of which is right. We ask before a single word is drafted.

This page explains a documentation process and is not legal advice on your individual case. The historical material is drawn from published accounts including the district administration's own, and is set out with respect for the events and people it describes. Where sources differ, including on spellings and on how this district was formed, we report the difference rather than choosing quietly. Land and tenancy in the Santhal Pargana division are governed by their own statutes and authorities. Separate guidelines apply to change of name and gender, and to minors. Fees are set by the Department of Publication and are revised, so confirm the current position before you pay. For a contested matter, or anything before a court, you need a lawyer engaged for you specifically.
