Name Change Agent in Seraikela Kharsawan

Wikipedia's article is titled Seraikela Kharsawan district. Its opening sentence says Seraikela town is the district headquarters of Saraikela Kharsawan district. Two spellings, one sentence apart, on the same page. Its article on the princely state states outright that Saraikela is also spelt Seraikela, Saraikella or Seraikella. The district administration's own site writes the formerly princely states of Seraikella and Kharsawa, dropping the final letter from the second name, while Wikipedia's district page writes Kharaswan with the letters in a different order.

So the first half of this district's name has at least four written forms and the second half has at least three, and every one of them appears in a source that ought to know. The district administration records that in 1620 Kumar Bikram Singh established the Seraikela state, and that after independence it was merged with Bihar and ranked as a subdivision within the boundaries of Kharsawan state. Seraikela and Kharsawan acceded to India on 1 January 1948 with a view to merging with Orissa, and on that same day the tribal population of both states, who were in the majority, rose against that merger. A commission under Mr Baudkar was appointed, and on its report the two states were merged with Bihar on 18 May 1948 instead. In 1950 thirty nine villages of the Chandil, Nimdih and Tamar areas were added under the territories act.

So the name of this district is not a name at all in the ordinary sense. It is two names joined, belonging to two states that were separate for centuries and are now one line on your address. That is worth remembering when somebody looks at your papers and finds two versions of your own name in them. Names get joined, split and rewritten by decisions taken elsewhere, and the record simply carries whatever it was given at the time.

Seraikela is the home of Seraikela Chhau, one of the three distinctive styles of the Chhau dance, and the district administration calls the town the Mecca for connoisseurs of music and dance and describes Chhau here as a unique amalgamation of Oriya and tribal culture. The Seraikela style is danced in masks. The face the audience sees is not the dancer's own, and the whole art depends on how much can be carried by a fixed outward form.
