Quick Answer

To change your name legally in Sirmaur, you follow three steps. A notarised affidavit on stamp paper, a public notice in one Hindi and one English newspaper, and a Gazette notification. The district name itself is spelt several different ways in official use, so the affidavit has to name the form printed on each of your papers.

The District Website Disagrees With Its Own Address

This District Has Five Official Spellings

Most places have one correct spelling and some old variants. Here the disagreement is live, and it sits inside the Government's own material. The district administration's website is at an address containing Sirmaur. The history page on that same website spells the name Sirmour throughout, and explains how local pronunciation produced that form. The state's own published district statistics list the district as Sirmour. The standard encyclopaedia entry titles the district Sirmaur. And the princely state is recorded as having been written Sirmur, Sirmor, Sirmaur, Sirmour and Sirmoor at different times.

So if your school certificate says Sirmour and your Aadhaar says Sirmaur, nobody in your family made a mistake. Two Government sources chose two forms and both are in current use. That does not make it harmless. A verifier in another state, comparing documents side by side, sees two different district names and asks a question that nobody in Sirmaur would ever ask. The answer is not to correct a paper. It is to name every form that appears, with the document each one came from, so the question is answered before it is raised.

Copy the spelling exactly, letter by letter, from each paper: Sirmaur, Sirmour, Sirmur, Sirmor or Sirmoor. Do not tidy them up into one form when you send them to us, because knowing which document carries which spelling is the whole point. This is the one detail we most often have to ask twice for on files from this district.
Central Gazette

The Central Gazette Process for a Name Change in Sirmaur

This is the route accepted everywhere in India and abroad. Here is each step.

Prepare and Notarise the Affidavit

A sworn declaration on non-judicial stamp paper, signed with two witnesses and attested by a Notary Public or First Class Magistrate at Nahan, Paonta Sahib, Rajgarh or Shillai.

Publish in Hindi and English Newspapers

One Hindi daily and one English daily, carrying the same old name, new name, address and affidavit date.

File With the Department of Publication

The complete file goes by post to the Controller of Publications, Civil Lines, Delhi, and your notice appears in Part IV of the Gazette of India.

Step 1 in Detail

What Your Name Change Affidavit Must Contain

Your old name exactly as printed on your existing documents
Your new name, spelt exactly as you want it recorded forever
Each spelling of the district as printed, with the paper it came from
Any paper naming Nahan State, Sirmur State or a former capital
A declaration that both names belong to the same person
Your signature, two witness signatures, and the notary stamp with date
Decide the initials once, not later: inconsistent initials are the most common reason a file is returned. Choose between S. P. Tomar, S P Tomar or the full expanded form, fix the spacing and the surname spelling, and keep it identical everywhere. Our name change affidavit page sets out the full wording.
Step 2 in Detail

The Hindi and English Newspaper Rules

Two papers are needed, one Hindi and one English, not just one
The notice must repeat the same old name, new name and address as the affidavit
It must mention the date on which the affidavit was made
The advertisement usually appears in the classified section
Keep the original dated cuttings showing the paper name
Even one letter spelt differently can get your whole file returned
Cost of this step: two budget dailies cost about Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,500 together, while premium national papers can cost Rs 2,500 to Rs 5,000. Dehradun and Chandigarh editions both circulate here, so a notice is easy to place from Nahan or Paonta Sahib.
Step 3 in Detail

What Goes Into Your Gazette File

The signed Gazette application form in the prescribed proforma
The original notarised affidavit
Original cuttings of both newspaper advertisements
A request letter addressed to the publishing authority
Identity proof, two photographs and the soft copy of the notice
The fee receipt, paid in the applicant's own name
Government fee and time: Rs 1,100 for an adult and Rs 1,700 for a minor, paid to the Controller of Publications in Delhi. Publication usually takes 4 to 6 weeks after a complete file reaches the department, and the e-Gazette copy carries the same legal weight as the printed one.
A State Named After Its Own Town

If a Paper Says Nahan State, That Is Not the Town

The princely state here was known by two names in ordinary use. It was Sirmur, and it was also called Nahan, after its capital and main city. The ruling line was the Prakash dynasty and the rulers held a salute of eleven guns. The state merged into India and was reconstituted as a district of Himachal Pradesh on 15 April 1948, when Sirmur joined the other Punjab hill states that formed the original Himachal Pradesh. Nahan has remained the administrative headquarters ever since.

This is the trap that catches people from here. A pre 1948 school record, land paper or service entry can name Nahan State in the column where a state belongs. Somebody reading it today knows Nahan as a town in Sirmaur district, decides the applicant has written a town where a state should be, and treats the whole document as carelessly filled in. It was not. Nahan State and Sirmur State were the same entity under two accepted names, and the paper is using one of them correctly.

What we do with it: the affidavit names Nahan State and Sirmur State together, states that they were one entity, and gives the merger date of 15 April 1948 that turned it into a district. Three lines, and a verifier stops having to guess. Our Himachal Pradesh guide covers the wider 1948 merger.

Government feeAs set by the state for its own headsRs 1,100 adult, Rs 1,700 minor, paid in Delhi
Our honest advice for Sirmaur: take the Central Gazette. This is the southern corner of Himachal, bordering Dehradun in Uttarakhand and the Yamunanagar side of Haryana, and Paonta Sahib in particular sits on that junction. People here study, work, bank and marry across both lines every day. A notification effective only inside Himachal does not travel with them. Our Yamunanagar guide covers the Haryana side of that border, and the full comparison is in our name change agent in India guide.
Nahan Is Only the Latest One

The Capital Moved Several Times, and One Old Seat Is in Another State

Nahan was founded in 1621 by Raja Karam Prakash and has been the seat ever since, but it was not the first. Before it the capital had stood elsewhere more than once, and the sources do not agree on the immediate predecessor. One account says the capital was shifted to Nahan from Kalsi, and another says from Rajban. Kalsi is worth pausing on, because it is in Dehradun district of Uttarakhand today. A seat of this state now sits in a different state altogether.

The district administration's own history page records a set of traditions about where the name came from. One says the state was given the title because of its standing among the hill states. Another traces it to a person. Another says it comes from Shiromorya, a title said to have been given by Chandragupta, worn down by local speech into the modern form. And another says the name comes from Sirmauri Taal, a pond near Paonta Sahib, which it records as having once been the capital. The encyclopaedia entry adds that a flood of the Giri river in 1195 destroyed a capital called Sirmaur Tal. These are traditions recorded by the administration rather than settled fact, and we pass them on as that. What matters practically is narrower. If an old paper of yours names a place you cannot find, this is a district where that is normal.

Send the place name even if it means nothing to you now: Kalsi, Rajban, Sirmauri Taal, Kotaha or a pargana name. We will not pretend to date a legend, but we can record the name exactly as printed with the year on the document, which is what an affidavit needs and what a verifier will accept.
Save Your Money

Not Every Case in Sirmaur Needs a Gazette

Many agents sell a Gazette for every case, and in this district the easiest way to sell one is to point at a district spelling and call it an error. It is not. Sirmaur and Sirmour are both in current Government use, and a paper carrying either is correct. Nahan State on a pre 1948 record is correct. An unfamiliar old place name is usually correct. None of those is a name change problem, and no Gazette will alter what an earlier authority wrote.

A name error in a birth certificate is corrected by the Registrar through the municipal council, nagar panchayat or gram panchayat where the birth was registered, so Nahan, Paonta Sahib, Rajgarh and Sarahan each have their own. Caste, income, residence and domicile certificates are corrected by the issuing authority at the tehsil or SDM office, and land record entries through the revenue side and the patwari. A Gazette is for a full legal name change, after marriage, after divorce, for numerology or by personal choice, and for cases where the same difference repeats across several records. Our name spelling correction page explains the difference.

Your Complete Name Change Journey in Sirmaur, Handled by NameChangeAgent

Most people think the Gazette is the finish line. It is the middle. Here is the whole journey.

NameChangeAgent is a platform built for exactly this one job, done properly, in your own tehsil. We are based in Delhi and we work with families across Sirmaur district entirely online, from Nahan and Paonta Sahib out to Rajgarh, Sangrah, Shillai, Pachhad, Renuka Ji and Sarahan. You send photographs of what you have on WhatsApp. We read them, tell you honestly which route your case needs, and then carry it through.

What makes a Sirmaur file different is that the district's own name is unsettled. The administration's website sits at one spelling and its history page uses another, the state's published statistics use a third form, and the princely state was written five ways over the years. On top of that the state itself was also called Nahan, so a pre 1948 paper can name what looks like a town in the state column. A generic online form asks about none of that, and an agent working from a template will see two district spellings across two documents and quietly assume one is wrong. We ask before a single word is drafted, because a file worded correctly the first time does not come back.

The complete file goes to the Department of Publication in Delhi by post, and we track it through to publication rather than leaving you to chase it.

Aadhaar, PAN, passport, bank, provident fund, property and college records. Most agents stop before this stage, and this is the stage that actually matters.

Name Change in Sirmaur, Frequently Asked Questions

Clear answers to the questions we hear most often.

How do I change my name legally in Sirmaur?
In three steps. A notarised affidavit on stamp paper, a public notice in one Hindi and one English newspaper, and a Gazette notification. We handle all three for you, fully online.
Is it Sirmaur or Sirmour?
Both are in current Government use. The district administration's website sits at an address containing Sirmaur while its history page spells the name Sirmour, and the state's published district statistics also use Sirmour. The princely state was written Sirmur, Sirmor, Sirmaur, Sirmour and Sirmoor at different times.
My documents use two different spellings of the district. Is one wrong?
Almost certainly not. Two Government sources chose two forms and both remain in use. Nothing needs correcting. The affidavit should name each spelling with the document it appears on, so a verifier in another state does not have to guess.
My old paper says Nahan State. Is that a mistake for the town?
No. The princely state was known as Sirmur and also as Nahan, after its capital and main city. A pre 1948 record naming Nahan in the state column is using a real second name for the state.
When did Sirmaur become a district?
On 15 April 1948, when the princely state merged into India and was reconstituted as a district of Himachal Pradesh, along with the other Punjab hill states that formed the original Himachal Pradesh. Nahan has remained the headquarters.
When was Nahan founded?
In 1621, by Raja Karam Prakash, who moved the capital there. Sources differ on where it moved from, with one account naming Kalsi and another Rajban. Kalsi is in Dehradun district of Uttarakhand today.
Where does the name Sirmaur come from?
The district administration records several traditions rather than one settled answer. One traces it to the state's standing among the hill states, one to a person, one to the title Shiromorya said to have been given by Chandragupta, and one to Sirmauri Taal, a pond near Paonta Sahib recorded as a former capital. These are traditions and we pass them on as that.
Should I take the state Gazette or the Central Gazette?
The Central Gazette. This district borders Dehradun in Uttarakhand and the Yamunanagar side of Haryana, and people here work and study across both lines. The state Gazette portal also states that the Himachal Pradesh Gazette is published online only and that notifications are submitted by Departments.
How much does a name change cost in Sirmaur?
The Central Gazette Government fee is Rs 1,100 for an adult and Rs 1,700 for a minor, paid to the Delhi office. Newspaper and affidavit charges are extra. Our complete service starts at Rs 3,999.
Will the Gazette update my Aadhaar and PAN automatically?
No. The Gazette is the proof of the change. You then apply to each authority separately, and each has its own process. We guide you through Aadhaar, PAN, passport, provident fund, bank and property records after publication.
