Quick Answer

To change your name legally in Yamunanagar, you follow three steps. A notarised affidavit on stamp paper, a public notice in one Hindi and one English newspaper, and a Gazette notification. If an old paper of yours says Abdullapur or Ambala, that is this place, and the affidavit has to say so.

A Name That Shares No Letters With the New One

A Paper Saying Abdullapur Is This City

Every official source for this district says the same thing. The Municipal Corporation states that before being named Yamunanagar it was known as Abdullapur. The district administration says the district was earlier known to Abdullapur. Before Haryana was formed in 1966 this was a small village in Punjab called Abdullahpur, with its population gathered around the railway station. And the old name itself appears three ways in official material, as Abdullapur, Abdullahpur and Abdulahpur.

This is a harder problem than most renamings and it is worth understanding why. When Gurgaon became Gurugram, anyone can see the two are the same word. Abdullapur and Yamunanagar share no letters at all. A verifier in another state reading Abdullapur on a school record and Yamunanagar on an Aadhaar has no reason to think they are the same place, and no way to work it out. It looks like two addresses, not one. So the affidavit cannot leave it implied. It has to name the document, its year, the place exactly as printed, and state plainly that the settlement now known as Yamunanagar was formerly Abdullapur.

And the railway station still says Jagadhri: the station serving this city carries the name of the older twin town, so a ticket, a railway service record or an address written from the station can say Jagadhri while your Aadhaar says Yamunanagar. That is a fourth name for the same place and it is not an error either. Send us every paper and we will list them all.
Central Gazette

The Central Gazette Process for a Name Change in Yamunanagar

This is the route accepted everywhere in India and abroad. Here is exactly what happens at each step.

Prepare and Notarise the Affidavit

A sworn declaration on non-judicial stamp paper, signed with two witnesses and attested by a Notary Public or First Class Magistrate in Yamunanagar or Jagadhri.

Publish in Hindi and English Newspapers

One Hindi daily and one English daily, carrying the same old name, new name, address and affidavit date.

File With the Department of Publication

The complete file goes to the Controller of Publications, Civil Lines, Delhi, and your notice appears in Part IV of the Gazette of India.

Step 1 in Detail

What Your Name Change Affidavit Must Contain

Your old name exactly as printed on your existing documents
Your new name, spelt exactly as you want it recorded forever
Your house number, sector or village, and tehsil exactly as on your proof
Any paper naming Abdullapur, Jagadhri or Ambala, with its year
A declaration that both names belong to the same person
Your signature, two witness signatures, and the notary stamp with date
Decide the initials once, not later: inconsistent initials are the most common reason a file is returned. Choose between V. K. Kamboj, V K Kamboj or the full expanded form, fix the spacing and the surname spelling, and keep it identical on all three documents.
Step 2 in Detail

The Hindi and English Newspaper Rules

Two papers are needed, one Hindi and one English, not just one
The notice must repeat the same old name, new name and address as the affidavit
It must mention the date on which the affidavit was made
The advertisement usually appears in the classified section
Keep the original dated cuttings showing the paper name
Even one letter spelt differently can get your whole file returned
Cost of this step: two budget dailies cost about Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,500 together, while premium national papers can cost Rs 2,500 to Rs 5,000. Chandigarh and Delhi editions both circulate here, so a notice is easy to place.
Step 3 in Detail

What Goes Into Your Gazette File

The signed Gazette application form in the prescribed proforma
The original notarised affidavit
Original cuttings of both newspaper advertisements
A request letter addressed to the publishing authority
Identity proof, two photographs and the soft copy of the notice
The fee receipt, paid in the applicant's own name
Government fee and time: Rs 1,100 for an adult and Rs 1,700 for a minor for the Central Gazette. Publication usually takes 4 to 6 weeks after a complete file reaches the department, and the e-Gazette copy carries the same legal weight as the printed one.
The Renaming Did Not Stop at the City

Even the Tehsil Names Have Changed, and Official Pages Disagree

Look up this district's tehsils on different Government pages and you will not get the same answer twice. One state urban body page lists the tehsils as Jagadhri, Chhachhrauli and Vyaspur, with sub tehsils at Sadhaura, Saraswati Nagar and Radaur. Another page of the same body lists Jagadhri, Chhachhrauli and Bilaspur, with sub tehsils at Sadhaura, Mustafabad and Radaur. The district's own site lists four tehsils including Radaur. None of these pages is a fake. They reflect renamings and reorganisations that happened at different times, and pages that were updated at different times.

For you this means the tehsil printed on an older certificate may be a name no current page uses, and the tehsil on a new certificate may be a name your family has never said out loud. Caste, income, residence and domicile certificates are all issued at tehsil level and carry that name. So a file from here can show two tehsil names for one village on two papers issued a decade apart. Record each exactly as printed with its year and state that the village has not moved. Do not try to make them match, because there is no version of the list that all offices agree on.

Read the seal, not the memory: photograph each certificate and send it to us rather than telling us which tehsil you think you are in. In this district that one habit prevents more rejections than anything else, because what people say and what the paper says genuinely differ here.
Compare the Two Routes

Haryana Gazette or Central Gazette for Yamunanagar?

Both are valid. Here is the honest difference, so you pick the right one the first time.

PointHaryana GazetteCentral Gazette of India
Published byPrinting and Stationery Department, Haryana, at Sector 18, ChandigarhDepartment of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi
Distance from YamunanagarAbout 106 kilometres to ChandigarhAbout 225 kilometres to Delhi, filed by post
Purely local record or propertyAdequate, and the state press is the closer one hereWorks too, but more than you need
Papers naming Abdullapur or AmbalaFine for a state department recordOne published proof accepted in every state
Records from Himachal PradeshNo effect outside HaryanaAccepted in Himachal and everywhere else
Records from Uttar Pradesh across the YamunaNo effect outside HaryanaAccepted in Uttar Pradesh too
Passport and going abroadUsually not accepted for visa and attestationThe proof passport offices and embassies look for
Government feeAs set by the state, non-refundableRs 1,100 adult, Rs 1,700 minor
Our honest advice for Yamunanagar: Chandigarh is closer than Delhi from here, so for a purely local record the state route is reasonable and we will tell you so. But this district sits on the Himachal border to the north and the Uttar Pradesh border to the east, and a great many families hold papers from one or both. Where any document comes from outside Haryana, or a passport is involved, take the Central Gazette. The state level detail is on our Haryana name change guide, and the full comparison is in our name change agent in India guide.
Before 1 November 1989

Older Records From Here Say Ambala

Yamunanagar district came into existence on 1 November 1989, carved out of Ambala district. So anyone born or schooled here before that date has records naming Ambala, and those records are correct. The link has not been fully cut either. This district still sits in the Ambala division, and its Sadhaura, Jagadhri and Yamuna Nagar assembly segments still form part of the Ambala parliamentary constituency, so the name Ambala keeps appearing on official paper connected to this place.

Put together with everything above, a family here can hold papers naming Abdullapur, Jagadhri, Ambala and Yamunanagar, all for the same household. Four names, all genuine, none of them a mistake. The affidavit lists each with the document and the year, and states that the place and the person are unchanged throughout. Our Ambala page covers the parent district, including its own twin city and the separate Cantonment Board Registrar, which is worth reading if any of your records were registered there.

Send the oldest paper in the house: a matriculation certificate, a jamabandi extract, an old ration card or a service record. If it names Ambala or Abdullapur rather than Yamunanagar, that is the single most important document for us to see, because it is the one a verifier will stop at.
Save Your Money

Not Every Case in Yamunanagar Needs a Gazette

Many agents sell a Gazette for every case. That is not honest, and in this district the commonest reason people are sold one is a place name that was never wrong. A paper saying Abdullapur, Jagadhri or Ambala, or a tehsil name no current page uses, is not a name change problem. Those need a properly worded affidavit, not a notification, and no Gazette will alter what an earlier authority wrote. A Gazette publishes a change to a person's name and does nothing at all to a place name.

A name error in a birth certificate is corrected by the Registrar through the Municipal Corporation Yamunanagar-Jagadhri, or the municipal committee or gram panchayat where the birth was registered. Caste, income, residence and domicile certificates are corrected by the issuing authority at the tehsil or SDM office, and land record entries through the revenue side and the patwari. If an office refuses in writing, the appeal runs upward through the Deputy Commissioner, which our Karnal page sets out. A Gazette is for a full legal name change, and for cases where the same difference repeats across records.

One Platform, Start to Finish

Your Complete Name Change Journey in Yamunanagar, Handled by NameChangeAgent

Most people think the Gazette is the finish line. It is the middle. Here is the whole journey, and where we stand beside you at each stage.

NameChangeAgent is a platform built for exactly this one job, done properly, in your own city. We are based in Delhi and we work with families across Yamunanagar district entirely online, from the twin towns out to Chhachhrauli, Radaur and the Shivalik foothills. You send photographs of what you have on WhatsApp. We read them, tell you honestly which route your case needs, and then carry it through. Nobody has to drive to Chandigarh or Delhi for any of it.

What makes a Yamunanagar file different is what you have already read on this page. A city whose earlier name, Abdullapur, shares not one letter with its present one, so an old certificate reads like a different place entirely. A railway station still carrying the name of the older twin town. Tehsil names that different Government pages list differently. A district that did not exist before November 1989, so older records say Ambala. A generic online form asks about none of that, and an agent outside Haryana will look at Abdullapur on a school record and assume it is somebody else's document. We ask before a single word is drafted, because a file worded correctly the first time does not come back.

Name Change in Yamunanagar, Frequently Asked Questions

Clear answers to the questions we hear most often.

How do I change my name legally in Yamunanagar?
In three steps. A notarised affidavit on stamp paper, a public notice in one Hindi and one English newspaper, and a Gazette notification. We handle all three for you, fully online.
My old certificate says Abdullapur, is that this place?
Yes. Before being named Yamunanagar this settlement was known as Abdullapur, and the old name also appears as Abdullahpur and Abdulahpur. The affidavit must say so plainly, because the two names share no letters and a verifier cannot work it out otherwise.
Why does my railway record say Jagadhri?
The station serving this city carries the name of the older twin town, Jagadhri. So a ticket or a railway service record can say Jagadhri while your Aadhaar says Yamunanagar. Both refer to the same place.
My birth certificate says Ambala, not Yamunanagar, why?
Yamunanagar district came into existence on 1 November 1989, carved out of Ambala district. Anything issued before that date correctly names Ambala.
Different Government pages list different tehsils for this district, which is right?
They reflect renamings and reorganisations made at different times, and pages updated at different times. Record the tehsil exactly as printed on each certificate with its year rather than trying to make them match.
I have documents from Himachal Pradesh or Uttar Pradesh, does that matter?
Yes. A certificate is corrected only by the state that issued it, and this district borders Himachal to the north and Uttar Pradesh across the Yamuna to the east. Where any paper comes from outside Haryana, take the Central Gazette.
Should I take the Haryana Gazette or the Central Gazette here?
Chandigarh is about 106 kilometres away and Delhi about 225, so the state press is actually closer. For a purely local record the state route is reasonable. For anything read outside Haryana, or a passport, take the Central Gazette.
How do I correct a name in a Yamunanagar birth certificate?
That is a Registrar correction through the Municipal Corporation Yamunanagar-Jagadhri, or the municipal committee or gram panchayat where the birth was registered. It is not a Gazette matter.
How much does a name change cost in Yamunanagar?
The Central Gazette Government fee is Rs 1,100 for an adult and Rs 1,700 for a minor. The Haryana Gazette fee is separate and non-refundable, and newspaper and affidavit charges are extra. Our complete service starts at Rs 3,999.
Will the Gazette update my Aadhaar and PAN automatically?
No. The Gazette is the proof of the change. You then apply to each authority separately, and each has its own process. We guide you through Aadhaar, PAN, passport, provident fund, bank and college records after publication.
