Quick Answer

To change your name legally in Ambala, you follow three steps. A notarised affidavit on stamp paper, a public notice in one Hindi and one English newspaper, and a Gazette notification. Check first whether your birth was registered in Ambala City or Ambala Cantt, because those are two separate authorities.

The Mistake People Make Before They Start

Ambala City and Ambala Cantt Are Two Different Authorities

Ambala is a twin city. Ambala City and Ambala Cantonment sit about eight kilometres apart and are governed by two entirely separate bodies. Ambala City comes under the Ambala Municipal Corporation. Ambala Cantt comes under the Cantonment Board Ambala, which operates under the Cantonments Act, 2006, with its office on Race Course Road. They have different PIN code ranges and even different vehicle series, HR 01 for the city and HR 85 for the cantonment.

This matters more than it sounds. If your birth was registered in the cantonment, the Registrar for that record is the Cantonment Board, and only the Cantonment Board can correct it. The Municipal Corporation cannot, no matter how politely you ask or how many times you queue. People lose days going to the wrong office because both places are called Ambala. And outside Haryana, a verifier looking at one document saying Ambala City and another saying Ambala Cantt may treat them as the same address or as a discrepancy, when in fact they are two real jurisdictions eight kilometres apart.

Tell us this one thing first: was the birth registered in Ambala Cantt or Ambala City? It decides which Registrar handles a correction, and it decides how we word the address in the affidavit. If you are not sure, send a photograph of the certificate and we will read the issuing authority off it.
The Gazette Route

The Gazette Process for a Name Change in Ambala

Three steps, whichever Gazette you choose. Here is exactly what happens at each one.

Prepare and Notarise the Affidavit

A sworn declaration on non-judicial stamp paper, signed with two witnesses and attested by a Notary Public or First Class Magistrate in Ambala.

Publish in Hindi and English Newspapers

One Hindi daily and one English daily, carrying the same old name, new name, address and affidavit date.

File With the Publishing Authority

Either the Haryana Gazette at Sector 18 Chandigarh, fifty five kilometres away, or the Central Gazette in Delhi. The next section explains which suits you.

Step 1 in Detail

What Your Name Change Affidavit Must Contain

Your old name exactly as printed on your existing documents
Your new name, spelt exactly as you want it recorded forever
Whether your address is Ambala Cantt or Ambala City, written as on your proof
Any record naming a different authority, with its year
A declaration that both names belong to the same person
Your signature, two witness signatures, and the notary stamp with date
Decide the initials once, not later: inconsistent initials are the most common reason a file is returned, and service records are checked harder than most. Choose between H. S. Bedi, H S Bedi or the full expanded form, fix the spacing and the surname spelling, and keep it identical everywhere.
Step 2 in Detail

The Hindi and English Newspaper Rules

Two papers are needed, one Hindi and one English, not just one
The notice must repeat the same old name, new name and address as the affidavit
It must mention the date on which the affidavit was made
The advertisement usually appears in the classified section
Keep the original dated cuttings showing the paper name
Even one letter spelt differently can get your whole file returned
Cost of this step: two budget dailies cost about Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,500 together, while premium national papers can cost Rs 2,500 to Rs 5,000. Chandigarh and Delhi editions both circulate here, so a notice is easy to place.
Step 3 in Detail

What Goes Into Your Gazette File

The signed Gazette application form in the prescribed proforma
The original notarised affidavit
Original cuttings of both newspaper advertisements
A request letter addressed to the publishing authority
Identity proof, two photographs and the soft copy of the notice
The fee receipt, paid in the applicant's own name
Government fee and time: Rs 1,100 for an adult and Rs 1,700 for a minor for the Central Gazette, with the Haryana Gazette fee set separately by the state. Publication usually takes 4 to 6 weeks, and the Haryana Gazette runs on a weekly cycle dispatched every Friday.
Serving and Retired Personnel

For Defence Families, the Records That Must Match Are the Service Book and the PPO

The cantonment here was established in 1843 and houses 2 Corps, one of the three strike corps of the Indian Army, alongside an Air Force presence. A very large number of families in this district are serving, retired or connected to that establishment, and their paperwork does not behave like anyone else's. A name change for a serving person is not only a Gazette matter. It has to go through the unit and the Records Office so that the service book itself is amended, and the deed has to be in the format prescribed under the Ministry of Home Affairs memorandum of 1987.

After retirement the document that causes the most trouble is the Pension Payment Order. A PPO is generated from the service record, and if the name in it does not match the bank account or the Aadhaar, pension credits stall and the correction has to travel back through the pension sanctioning authority rather than being fixed at the bank counter. The order of work is therefore the opposite of what most people assume. Get the Gazette published, get the service record amended through the proper channel while you still have access to it, and only then approach the bank. Doing the bank first is what leaves people chasing a correction for months.

Tell us at the start if anyone in the file is serving or retired from the forces: the affidavit wording, the deed format and the order in which the updates happen are all different. We would rather know on the first message than after the notice has been published.
Compare the Two Routes

Haryana Gazette or Central Gazette for Ambala?

This is the one Haryana city where the answer is genuinely split. Here is the honest comparison.

PointHaryana GazetteCentral Gazette of India
Published byPrinting and Stationery Department, Haryana, at Sector 18, ChandigarhDepartment of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi
Distance from AmbalaAbout 55 kilometres, the closest of any Haryana cityAbout 200 kilometres, filed by post
How often it appearsWeekly, dispatched every Friday, in fifteen PartsPart IV, published as files are cleared
Purely local record, job or propertyPerfectly adequate and closer to handWorks too, but more than you need
Defence service book and Records OfficeNot the route central service records work withThe published proof the forces and central offices accept
Pension Payment Order correctionMeant for state department recordsThe route a pension sanctioning authority expects
Passport and going abroadUsually not accepted for visa and attestationThe proof passport offices and embassies look for
Government feeAs set by the state, non-refundableRs 1,100 adult, Rs 1,700 minor
Our honest advice for Ambala, and it differs from our other Haryana pages: in Gurugram, Faridabad and Panipat we tell almost everyone to take the Central Gazette, because the state press is hundreds of kilometres away and their records are national. Ambala is genuinely different. Chandigarh is fifty five kilometres up the road and the state Gazette runs on a predictable weekly cycle, so for a purely local record it is a sensible choice. But if anyone in the file is serving, retired, holds a PPO or needs a passport, take the Central Gazette. The state level detail is on our Haryana name change guide, and the full comparison is in our name change agent in India guide.
Names on Older Papers

A Cantonment Moved Here in 1843, and the District Has Shrunk Since

The cantonment was established in 1843 after the British abandoned their earlier station at Saphera following the malaria epidemic of 1841 and 1842. Before Haryana was formed on 1 November 1966 this was Punjab, so family papers older than that name Punjab rather than Haryana, and that is correct for the year they were issued. Ambala district has also been divided since, with areas that were once part of it now forming separate districts of their own.

So a household here can hold a paper naming Punjab, another naming Ambala district, and a current Aadhaar naming a district that did not exist when the older papers were written. None of them is wrong. The affidavit records each document, the authority that issued it, the year and the district exactly as printed, then states that the place and the person are unchanged throughout. Our Panipat page explains how strange these district sequences can get, because that district was created, abolished and created again inside three years.

Send the oldest paper in the house: a matriculation certificate, a jamabandi extract, an old service record or a revenue receipt. If it names Punjab or a district that no longer covers your village, that is exactly the document we need to see, not one to leave out.
Save Your Money

Not Every Case in Ambala Needs a Gazette

Many agents sell a Gazette for every case. That is not honest. A paper naming Punjab, an address that says Cantt on one document and City on another, or a spelling difference between a service record and an Aadhaar is not a name change problem at all. Those need a properly worded affidavit, not a notification, and no Gazette will alter what an earlier authority wrote.

A name error in a birth certificate registered in the cantonment is corrected by the Registrar at the Cantonment Board Ambala, and one registered in the city by the Registrar through the Ambala Municipal Corporation, or the nagar parishad or gram panchayat where the birth was registered. Caste, income, residence and domicile certificates are corrected by the issuing authority at the tehsil or SDM office, and land record entries through the revenue side and the patwari. A service book amendment goes through the unit and the Records Office. A Gazette is for a full legal name change, and for cases where the same difference repeats across several records.

Your Complete Name Change Journey in Ambala, Handled by NameChangeAgent

Most people think the Gazette is the finish line. It is the middle. Here is the whole journey, and where we stand beside you at each stage.

NameChangeAgent is a platform built for exactly this one job, done properly, in your own city. We are based in Delhi and we work with families across Ambala district entirely online. You send photographs of what you have on WhatsApp. We read them, tell you honestly which route your case needs, and then carry it through. In this district that honesty sometimes means recommending the state Gazette rather than ours, because Chandigarh is close and for a purely local record it is the sensible choice.

What makes an Ambala file different is what you have already read on this page. Two civic authorities eight kilometres apart with the same city name, so a correction filed with the wrong Registrar goes nowhere. A service book and a Records Office in the chain for a great many households. A Pension Payment Order that must match the bank before a pension moves. Papers older than 1966 that name Punjab. A generic online form asks about none of that, and an agent who has not worked a cantonment file will send you to the Municipal Corporation for a certificate it never issued. We ask before a single word is drafted, because a file worded correctly the first time does not come back.

Name Change in Ambala, Frequently Asked Questions

Clear answers to the questions we hear most often.

How do I change my name legally in Ambala?
In three steps. A notarised affidavit on stamp paper, a public notice in one Hindi and one English newspaper, and a Gazette notification. We handle all three for you, fully online.
What is the difference between Ambala City and Ambala Cantt?
They are two towns about eight kilometres apart with two separate authorities. Ambala City comes under the Ambala Municipal Corporation and Ambala Cantt under the Cantonment Board Ambala, which operates under the Cantonments Act, 2006.
My birth was registered in Ambala Cantt, who corrects the certificate?
The Registrar at the Cantonment Board Ambala. The Municipal Corporation cannot correct a cantonment record, so going there first only costs you time.
Should I take the Haryana Gazette or the Central Gazette in Ambala?
For a purely local record the Haryana Gazette is a sensible choice here, because Chandigarh is only about fifty five kilometres away and it runs weekly. If anyone in the file is serving, retired, holds a PPO or needs a passport, take the Central Gazette.
I am serving in the forces, is a Gazette enough on its own?
No. The service book also has to be amended through your unit and Records Office, and the deed must be in the format prescribed under the Ministry of Home Affairs memorandum of 1987.
My pension has stopped because the name does not match, what do I do?
A Pension Payment Order is generated from the service record, so the correction travels back through the pension sanctioning authority rather than being fixed at the bank counter. Publish the Gazette first, then correct the record, then approach the bank.
My old paper says Punjab instead of Haryana, is it valid?
Yes. Haryana was formed on 1 November 1966, so anything issued before that correctly says Punjab. The affidavit names the document, its authority and its year.
Why do my documents show different vehicle or PIN codes for the same city?
Because the cantonment and the city are separate. HR 01 is the city series and HR 85 the cantonment, and the two have different PIN code ranges. Both are Ambala.
How much does a name change cost in Ambala?
The Central Gazette Government fee is Rs 1,100 for an adult and Rs 1,700 for a minor. The Haryana Gazette fee is separate and non-refundable, and newspaper and affidavit charges are extra. Our complete service starts at Rs 3,999.
Will the Gazette update my Aadhaar and PAN automatically?
No. The Gazette is the proof of the change. You then apply to each authority separately, and each has its own process. We guide you through Aadhaar, PAN, passport, service book, PPO, bank and college records after publication.
