To change your name legally in Ambala, you follow three steps. A notarised affidavit on stamp paper, a public notice in one Hindi and one English newspaper, and a Gazette notification. Check first whether your birth was registered in Ambala City or Ambala Cantt, because those are two separate authorities.
Ambala City and Ambala Cantt Are Two Different Authorities
Ambala is a twin city. Ambala City and Ambala Cantonment sit about eight kilometres apart and are governed by two entirely separate bodies. Ambala City comes under the Ambala Municipal Corporation. Ambala Cantt comes under the Cantonment Board Ambala, which operates under the Cantonments Act, 2006, with its office on Race Course Road. They have different PIN code ranges and even different vehicle series, HR 01 for the city and HR 85 for the cantonment.
This matters more than it sounds. If your birth was registered in the cantonment, the Registrar for that record is the Cantonment Board, and only the Cantonment Board can correct it. The Municipal Corporation cannot, no matter how politely you ask or how many times you queue. People lose days going to the wrong office because both places are called Ambala. And outside Haryana, a verifier looking at one document saying Ambala City and another saying Ambala Cantt may treat them as the same address or as a discrepancy, when in fact they are two real jurisdictions eight kilometres apart.
The Gazette Process for a Name Change in Ambala
Three steps, whichever Gazette you choose. Here is exactly what happens at each one.
Prepare and Notarise the Affidavit
A sworn declaration on non-judicial stamp paper, signed with two witnesses and attested by a Notary Public or First Class Magistrate in Ambala.
Publish in Hindi and English Newspapers
One Hindi daily and one English daily, carrying the same old name, new name, address and affidavit date.
File With the Publishing Authority
Either the Haryana Gazette at Sector 18 Chandigarh, fifty five kilometres away, or the Central Gazette in Delhi. The next section explains which suits you.

What Goes Into Your Gazette File
For Defence Families, the Records That Must Match Are the Service Book and the PPO
The cantonment here was established in 1843 and houses 2 Corps, one of the three strike corps of the Indian Army, alongside an Air Force presence. A very large number of families in this district are serving, retired or connected to that establishment, and their paperwork does not behave like anyone else's. A name change for a serving person is not only a Gazette matter. It has to go through the unit and the Records Office so that the service book itself is amended, and the deed has to be in the format prescribed under the Ministry of Home Affairs memorandum of 1987.
After retirement the document that causes the most trouble is the Pension Payment Order. A PPO is generated from the service record, and if the name in it does not match the bank account or the Aadhaar, pension credits stall and the correction has to travel back through the pension sanctioning authority rather than being fixed at the bank counter. The order of work is therefore the opposite of what most people assume. Get the Gazette published, get the service record amended through the proper channel while you still have access to it, and only then approach the bank. Doing the bank first is what leaves people chasing a correction for months.
Haryana Gazette or Central Gazette for Ambala?
This is the one Haryana city where the answer is genuinely split. Here is the honest comparison.
| Point | Haryana Gazette | Central Gazette of India |
|---|---|---|
| Published by | Printing and Stationery Department, Haryana, at Sector 18, Chandigarh | Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi |
| Distance from Ambala | About 55 kilometres, the closest of any Haryana city | About 200 kilometres, filed by post |
| How often it appears | Weekly, dispatched every Friday, in fifteen Parts | Part IV, published as files are cleared |
| Purely local record, job or property | Perfectly adequate and closer to hand | Works too, but more than you need |
| Defence service book and Records Office | Not the route central service records work with | The published proof the forces and central offices accept |
| Pension Payment Order correction | Meant for state department records | The route a pension sanctioning authority expects |
| Passport and going abroad | Usually not accepted for visa and attestation | The proof passport offices and embassies look for |
| Government fee | As set by the state, non-refundable | Rs 1,100 adult, Rs 1,700 minor |
A Cantonment Moved Here in 1843, and the District Has Shrunk Since
The cantonment was established in 1843 after the British abandoned their earlier station at Saphera following the malaria epidemic of 1841 and 1842. Before Haryana was formed on 1 November 1966 this was Punjab, so family papers older than that name Punjab rather than Haryana, and that is correct for the year they were issued. Ambala district has also been divided since, with areas that were once part of it now forming separate districts of their own.
So a household here can hold a paper naming Punjab, another naming Ambala district, and a current Aadhaar naming a district that did not exist when the older papers were written. None of them is wrong. The affidavit records each document, the authority that issued it, the year and the district exactly as printed, then states that the place and the person are unchanged throughout. Our Panipat page explains how strange these district sequences can get, because that district was created, abolished and created again inside three years.
Not Every Case in Ambala Needs a Gazette
Many agents sell a Gazette for every case. That is not honest. A paper naming Punjab, an address that says Cantt on one document and City on another, or a spelling difference between a service record and an Aadhaar is not a name change problem at all. Those need a properly worded affidavit, not a notification, and no Gazette will alter what an earlier authority wrote.
A name error in a birth certificate registered in the cantonment is corrected by the Registrar at the Cantonment Board Ambala, and one registered in the city by the Registrar through the Ambala Municipal Corporation, or the nagar parishad or gram panchayat where the birth was registered. Caste, income, residence and domicile certificates are corrected by the issuing authority at the tehsil or SDM office, and land record entries through the revenue side and the patwari. A service book amendment goes through the unit and the Records Office. A Gazette is for a full legal name change, and for cases where the same difference repeats across several records.

Your Complete Name Change Journey in Ambala, Handled by NameChangeAgent
Most people think the Gazette is the finish line. It is the middle. Here is the whole journey, and where we stand beside you at each stage.
NameChangeAgent is a platform built for exactly this one job, done properly, in your own city. We are based in Delhi and we work with families across Ambala district entirely online. You send photographs of what you have on WhatsApp. We read them, tell you honestly which route your case needs, and then carry it through. In this district that honesty sometimes means recommending the state Gazette rather than ours, because Chandigarh is close and for a purely local record it is the sensible choice.
What makes an Ambala file different is what you have already read on this page. Two civic authorities eight kilometres apart with the same city name, so a correction filed with the wrong Registrar goes nowhere. A service book and a Records Office in the chain for a great many households. A Pension Payment Order that must match the bank before a pension moves. Papers older than 1966 that name Punjab. A generic online form asks about none of that, and an agent who has not worked a cantonment file will send you to the Municipal Corporation for a certificate it never issued. We ask before a single word is drafted, because a file worded correctly the first time does not come back.
